The Golden State Warriors are off to their best home start in 20 years, with Monta Ellis' league-best scoring average setting the pace for an up-tempo team that's most comfortable inside Oracle Arena.

In the Utah Jazz's last two visits to Oakland, Ellis and the Warriors often found themselves at their worst.

Utah forced Ellis into two dreadful performances while each time holding Golden State under 100 points last season, a pattern it'll look to repeat as it seeks a third straight victory Friday night.

Golden State (3-1) hasn't had a winning record through four games since also starting 3-1 in 2005-06, and Ellis has led the way to three consecutive home victories.

He started with 46 points on opening night against Houston, had 11 assists in a blowout against the Los Angeles Clippers, then did it all Wednesday against Memphis.

With Stephen Curry (sprained ankle) out for a second straight game, Ellis had 39 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and three steals in a 115-109 win. He leads the NBA with 30.0 points per game.

"That's why he's one of the elite players," said teammate Dorell Wright, who hit a career-high seven 3-pointers and is shooting 54.5 percent (18 for 33) from beyond the arc. "He's the face of this organization because he can get going any time he wants to. He reminds me of Dwyane Wade. It was impeccable."

Golden State is 3-0 at home for the first time since winning its first six games in 1990-91.

The Warriors have averaged 118.7 points in their three games in Oakland, an impressive but not unusual figure considering they scored 112.0 per game at home last season.

That average would have been higher had it not been for two visits from the Jazz (2-2). Golden State was held under 100 points eight times at Oracle Arena in 2009-10 but couldn't even get to 95 in either loss to Utah.

The Warriors shot 37.7 percent, with no one more responsible for that number than Ellis, who went 6 for 36 (.167) while averaging 10.0 points and 4.5 turnovers.

Surprisingly quiet against the Warriors last season was Deron Williams, who averaged 9.0 points and shot 25.0 percent (8 for 32) in three Utah victories. He did average 12.3 assists.

Williams didn't do much in a pair of blowout losses as the Jazz opened this season, averaging 15.0 points and 6.0 assists, but he's been back in All-Star form since. Williams had 16 points and 15 assists in a 120-99 win at Oklahoma City on Sunday, then contributed 22 points, 14 assists and eight boards in a 125-108 victory over Toronto on Wednesday.

"D-Will is D-Will," said teammate Al Jefferson, who's averaged 23.3 points after being held to six in his Jazz debut. "He's amazing. He gets guys involved."

Guard C.J. Miles has averaged 20.0 points off the bench during the two wins, but perhaps no player has been more essential early on than Paul Millsap. Carlos Boozer's replacement at power forward has averaged 23.3 points, 11.7 rebounds and 4.0 assists during his last three games.

Millsap left the game against the Raptors briefly with a mild ankle sprain but is listed as probable. He will be facing a Golden State team against which he pulled down a career-high 24 rebounds in a 103-94 road win April 13.

Curry, meanwhile, is questionable for the Warriors, as are Utah's Kyrylo Fesenko (gastric distress) and Jeremy Evans (wrist).

Curry's late surge helps lift Warriors past Jazz

OAKLAND, Calif.(AP) This is the kind of game the Golden State Warriors might not have pulled out a year ago.

"We would have given up and lost by 20," leading scorer Monta Ellis said.

Now, they're doing the little things - like getting key rebounds when the first shot doesn't fall.

Stephen Curry returned from an ankle injury to score nine points over the final 2:35, lifting the Warriors to an 85-78 victory over the short-handed Utah Jazz on Friday night to stay unbeaten at home.

David Lee had 14 points and 15 rebounds for his fifth double-double in as many games, tipping in a miss with 21.8 seconds left to help clinch it. Lee is showing the Warriors he is very much the reliable player on both ends of the court they expected after acquiring him in a July trade with the New York Knicks.

Ellis added 23 points and a career-high seven steals and Andris Biedrins grabbed a season-best 20 rebounds for Golden State (4-1), which under first-year coach Keith Smart is off to its best start since the Warriors began 5-0 in 1994-95 only to falter to a 26-56 finish a year after making the playoffs.

"To be 4-1 with the losing they've had here and the losing I had in New York ... it's very exciting," Lee said. "It's something that sets us up."

Golden State is 4-0 at Oracle Arena for its best home start since 1990-91.

Raja Bell's uncontested layin tied the game at 72 with 3:17 to play, then Lee missed two free throws with 3:02 remaining.

Curry, who was back in the starting lineup after missing two games with a mild right ankle sprain, then came up big. He hit a go-ahead 18-footer with 2:35 to play and then converted a steal into a spinning layin and a three-point play the next time down to make it 77-72 with 2:11 left.

Curry, last season's runner up for Rookie of the Year, went through his pregame routine and deemed himself good to go. Wearing a brace on the tender ankle, he finished with 20 points on 7-for-17 shooting and dished out six assists in 33 minutes.

Ellis nailed a 20-footer with 54.8 seconds to go. The Warriors scored their fewest points in a win since an 83-81 victory at New York on Nov. 6, 2005.

Deron Williams scored 23 points for the Jazz after he came within two rebounds of a triple-double in a 125-108 victory over Toronto on Wednesday. Williams committed eight of his team's 21 turnovers.

"We just didn't seem to have the energy to compete with them," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "When you give up 21 turnovers for 27 points, that's almost a goodbye kiss."

Al Jefferson added 16 points and 15 rebounds and Paul Millsap 12 points and 11 boards.

The Jazz also missed some key fourth-quarter opportunities. Ronnie Price bricked a breakaway dunk attempt with 9:08 remaining that would have pulled Utah within one, then C.J. Miles airballed a 3-point try from the top of the arc on the next Jazz possession.

Curry tossed a behind-the-back pass to Lee for a powerful two-handed dunk with 7:39 to play, putting the Warriors up 66-61.

Smart, who took over in late September for the departed Don Nelson, has the new-look Warriors playing with emotion and energy - even if it doesn't always look pretty. Golden State won this one shooting 37.6 percent, including 2-of-14 showing from 3-point range.

But the Warriors crashed the boards to create second chances to help make up for it, outrebounding the Jazz 52-46 - the first time doing so against Utah since Nov. 25, 2006. Golden State snapped a three-game losing streak to the Jazz overall and a three-game skid in the series at home. The Warriors will take some momentum onto the road for a five-game East Coast trip starting Sunday at Detroit.

"We have a saying `D.T.W. - defense travels well,"' Smart said. "If you can lock into your defense, that's what they've done and that kept us in the game."

Utah held the Warriors below 100 points - 89 and 94 - in both their visits to Oracle Arena last season.

Sloan, Utah's 20th-year coach, remained four wins from passing Pat Riley (1,195) to become the third all-time winningest coach in the NBA. Nelson is the leader with 1,335 victories in 31 seasons coaching Milwaukee, Golden State, New York and Dallas.

The Jazz played without Kyrylo Fesenko for the second straight game after he showed up for Wednesday's shootaround but wound up sidelined with a gastric ailment. Mehmet Okur is still sidelined after rupturing his Achilles' during the first round of the playoffs last season.

Jeremy Evans missed his second consecutive game with a sprained right wrist.

Notes: Biedrins posted his fourth career 20-rebound game. ... Curry had aggravated his ankle in each of the first two regular-season games after hurting it in the preseason finale. ... The Warriors won their first six home games in 90-91. ... Golden State has held a rebounding advantage in four of its first five games, going 4-0 in those contests. ... The Warriors began shooting in the south basket for a change - as Sloan is believed to be the only NBA coach who chooses to have his team shoot into the basket in front of his bench in the second half. ... The Warriors' 21 offensive rebounds matched an NBA season high.

THE FACTS: Monta Ellis scored 23 points and grabbed a career-high seven steals to highlight a stout Warriors defense that keyed Golden State's 85-78 victory against the Utah Jazz on Friday night. The Warriors scored 27 points off 21 Utah turnovers and limited the Jazz to 39.5 percent shooting, 21.4 on 3-pointers.

QUOTABLE: "We have a saying: 'DTW -- Defense Travels Well.' Your legs and your shots won't go all the time. Your jump shots may not be there. But if you can lock into your defense -- that's what they've done. And that kept us in the game. We weren't down by 10, 15 points. Our defense kept us close."

THE STAT: The Jazz have historically feasted on the small-ball Warriors, but that was no longer the case Friday, as they were limited to just eight second-chance points, compared the Warriors' 26. Al Jefferson had 15 boards and Paul Millsap 11 for Utah, but they were outgunned by Andris Biedrins, who had 20, and David Lee, who grabbed 15.

TURNING POINT: Moments after Deron Williams (who finished with 23 points) had dragged Utah back into a 72-72 tie with 3:17 remaining, Stephen Curry responded with the knockout flurry. The Warriors point guard drained a jumper to retake the lead for good, then stripped Jefferson and dribbled the length of the court before spinning between two Utah defenders for a highlight-reel finish and three-point play.

QUOTABLE II: "We are not trying to take so much crazy shots as we did in the last couple of years. We try to more move the ball and get easier shots and get everybody else involved in the offense. So I think that helps, that we don't take those shots after five or seven seconds on offense, just pulling up."

NOT: Dorell Wright came into Friday averaging 20.0 points per game, but his 25-point performance (with seven 3-pointers) against Memphis on Wednesday didn't carry over against the Jazz. Wright went 3-for-13.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Pablo Sandoval, newly minted world champion with the San Francisco Giants, sat courtside near the Warriors' bench and received a large ovation when introduced on the PA system.

GOOD MOVE: Smart managed to give both Ellis and Curry nearly four minutes of rest to start the fourth quarter, and a makeshift backcourt of Reggie Williams, Charlie Bell, Rodney Carney, Lee and Dan Gadzuric held the Jazz in check until the closers were suitably recharged.

BAD MOVE: Andrei Kirilenko needs to start because he's one of the few veterans Jerry Sloan has who is totally familiar with the playbook, but not if the Russian's going to have nights such as this: 0-for-3, four points, four rebounds, two turnovers in 27 minutes.

NOTABLE: Curry, playing for the first time after a sprained right ankle caused him to miss two games, wore a noticeable brace on that foot. . . . This was the fourth 20-rebound game of Andris Biedrins' career. . . . This was the fewest points the Warriors scored in a victory since an 83-81 decision in New York against the Knicks on Nov. 6, 2005. . . . The Jazz found demonstrators outside their Oakland hotel Friday before the game, protesting the shortness of the two-year sentence given to former BART police Officer Johannes Mehserle in the shooting death of unarmed train rider Oscar Grant on Jan. 1, 2009. The situation reminded Sloan of April 1992, when the Jazz were in Los Angeles for a first-round playoff series against the Clippers and, between Games 3 and 4, the Rodney King riots broke out after four LAPD officers were acquitted in the videotaped beating of King. "It's something you think about," Sloan said. "That was kind of a scary time for us. We had to stay in the hotel the whole time. It was very uncomfortable. It wasn't a laughing matter." . . . After opening 4-0 at home but losing their only road game, the Warriors embark on a five-date road trip, one of their three longest this season, and partake of their first two sets of back-to-back games.
