The Golden State Warriors finished first or second in the NBA in scoring in all four seasons during Don Nelson's second stint as coach.

Based on the team's first game with Keith Smart in charge, that doesn't look like it's about to change.

Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry had the Warriors' run-and-gun style looking effective in Smart's debut, a high-scoring performance they'll look to build on against the visiting Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night.

Golden State averaged 108.7 points over the past four seasons, but Smart promised a team that focused more on defense and rebounding after spending the past seven years as an assistant.

That may eventually happen, but the Warriors' style didn't look much different in the club's opener against Houston on Wednesday night. Ellis tied a career high with 46 points while Curry added 25 points and 11 assists in a 132-128 win.

"We've been going through preseason and training camp for this moment right here," Ellis said after making 18 of 24 shots. "To get the first win to start the season off in the right direction says a lot."

While Smart may have envisioned a better defensive performance, he had to like his team's effort on the boards. Golden State's minus-9.7 rebound differential last season was the worst in the league by nearly five per game, but the Warriors outrebounded the Rockets 45-39 behind a team-high 15 from offseason acquisition David Lee.

The Clippers weren't nearly as successful in Vinny Del Negro's debut on the sidelines, blowing a four-point fourth-quarter lead against Portland in a 98-88 defeat Wednesday.

The night wasn't a total loss for Los Angeles. Blake Griffin, the 2009 No. 1 overall pick who missed last season with a knee injury, had 20 points and 14 rebounds in his debut.

"In some areas I did well, but there's a lot of room for improvement," Griffin said. "It was a sigh of relief that I made it back, but I don't want to make this game bigger than it is. It is a first game, not a live-or-die situation."

Despite Griffin's effort, the Clippers were outrebounded 51-41, giving up 21 offensive boards.

Los Angeles also struggled from the perimeter, resembling the team that shot a Western Conference-worst 33.2 percent from beyond the arc in 2009-10. The Clippers were 5 of 18 on 3-pointers and managed 19 points outside the paint Wednesday.

Ellis faced Los Angeles only once last season as the teams split four games, but Curry made up for the absence of his teammate. He averaged 27.7 points in the three games Ellis missed, highlighted by 36 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds in a 132-102 home win Feb. 10.

Nineteen of Curry's points Wednesday came after halftime, even though he tweaked the right ankle sprain that kept him out of the final preseason game.

It's not expected to limit him Friday.

"He's a smart player, he's going to figure stuff out," Smart said. "I have to keep him actively engaged in the game and not settle for being a passer, because there is so much he can do for the team."

Lee averaged 27.0 points in two games against the Clippers last season with New York.

Warriors bury Clippers, but lose Curry

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Monta Ellis knew early his shot wasn't falling. Unlike in the past, Golden State's mercurial scorer didn't force the issue.

Instead, Ellis was content deferring to his teammates and passing the ball around. As a result, the Warriors are off to their best start in 16 years.

Two days after matching his career high in scoring, Ellis had 15 points and 11 assists, Dorel Wright added 24 points and the Warriors beat the Los Angeles Clippers 109-91 on Friday night.

"I saw in the beginning of the game that it wasn't my game so I tried to do other things to get my team involved," Ellis said. "I know when my day is going to be good and when my day is going to be bad. We just went off the flow, ran and made plays and came out with the win."

Ellis, who had 46 points in a season-opening win over Houston on Wednesday night, had an off night shooting, but made three 3-pointers and came within two assists of tying his personal best.

The win might have been costly.

Second-year guard Stephen Curry re-injured his right ankle in the third quarter. The second-year guard, who originally hurt the ankle in the preseason and aggravated it in the Warriors' season-opening victory against Houston on Wednesday night, did not return.

"It's more rehab, that's all that means," said Curry, who had 16 points before getting hurt. "Just got to be smart about it now and try to get it back to 100 percent and get it stronger so that even if I do step on somebody's foot I can recover. We'll find out tomorrow and see how it reacts."

Blake Griffin, the top overall pick in 2009 who missed all of last season because of a knee injury, had his second straight double-double for the Clippers with 14 points and 10 rebounds while playing in foul trouble most of the second half.

Los Angeles couldn't recover from Golden State's 21-2 run to open the third quarter.

"It is frustrating to be down at the beginning of the second half and come out and just be torn apart like that," Griffin said. "We've got to bounce back."

The Warriors are 2-0 for the first time since 1994 when they won their first five before finishing 26-56.

Ellis is a big reason.

"That's maturity," coach Keith Smart said. "He saw how the defense was playing, read it, saw that other guys were playing well and just made plays and simply became the facilitator. That's the maturity of where he is at right now."

Golden State's good feelings after the game were tempered by the injury to Curry, who was hurt while trying to get around a pick set by Griffin with 6:03 left in the third quarter.

Curry rolled his right foot and immediately fell to the floor in pain. When play was halted, trainers rushed out to Curry, who lay on the court for several moments while surrounded by teammates and Smart.

Curry eventually was helped to his feet and limped slowly off the court. He was examined in the trainer's room and did not return. He is listed as day to day.

Before getting hurt, Curry scored six straight points to start the third quarter and ignited a 21-2 run that put Golden State ahead for good. Ellis had five points during the streak while Lee added four, then later scored on a three-point play to give the Warriors their biggest lead of the night at 87-63.

Wright helped pick up the scoring slack once Curry left, matching his career high with six 3-pointers.

Griffin did most of his scoring in the first quarter before heading to the bench with three fouls. He finished 6 of 14 from the floor and added three assists for the Clippers (0-2).

"We have a lot of growing pains, a lot of things to work on," Los Angeles coach Vinny Del Negro said after his team shot 38.6 percent from the floor. "We have to have more of a defensive sense of urgency, especially in the third quarter. We weren't aggressive but Golden State spreads you out."

Ellis notched his 15th career double-double for Golden State, which beat Los Angeles for the ninth time in the last 10 games between the two teams at Oracle Arena.

NOTES: The game was the 5,000th in Warriors' franchise history. They are 2,295-2,2705. ... It was Asian Heritage Night at Oracle Arena and the crowd of 17,408 rose in a standing ovation when reserve Jeremy Lin checked into the game with 2:32 remaining in the fourth quarter. Lin, who grew up in the Bay Area, didn't score but hustled for a loose ball that brought the crowd to its feet again.

Clippers-Warriors notebook

THE FACTS: The Golden State Warriors opened the third quarter on a 21-2 run and improved to 2-0 for the first time since 1994 with a 109-91 win against the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night. Dorell Wright scored 24 points -- including a career-high-tying six 3-pointers -- to lead all scorers, but the Warriors may have temporarily lost the services of Stephen Curry, who departed early after re-spraining his right ankle.

QUOTABLE: "The conversations (between players and coaches) at the half, coming out into the third quarter, has been good from the preseason until now. The guys came out once again very focused on both sides of the ball and focused on defense first. The defense got the transition game going and now we have guys making passes rather than taking quick shots."

THE STAT: Smart said prior to the game that he wanted to see his team come up with one solid defensive quarter, and the Warriors provided it in the third period, holding the Clippers to 16.7 percent shooting from the floor. Brian Cook, Baron Davis, Randy Foye, Ryan Gomes and Blake Griffin combined to miss all 10 of their attempts in the third.

TURNING POINT: The Warriors transformed what had been a four-point game into a blowout in less than 6 minutes of post-halftime play. Curry scored seven points and assisted on five more during the Warriors' 21-2 burst, which included four Golden State dunks against a visibly confused Clippers defense.

HOT: Coming off a 46-point Opening Night performance, Monta Ellis showed off his versatility Friday with 15 points and 11 assists, the 15th double-double of his career.

NOT: Despite facing a group of unheralded Warriors big men that got in collective foul trouble before the end of the first quarter, Clippers center Chris Kaman and power forward Griffin combined to shoot 11-for-28, with six turnovers outweighing four assists. Los Angeles tried time and again to go to Kaman in the post during the third quarter, but got next to nothing to show for it -- an especially troubling fact in light of Kaman's 4-for-18 performance against Portland on Wednesday.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Curry had an efficient 16 points (on 7-for-9 shooting) and six assists in 27 minutes, but rolled his already-sprained right ankle for the third time in as many games (including his last preseason appearance). A team spokesman said X-rays were not required, and he's considered day-to-day.

INSIDE THE ARENA: When Ellis drained a 3-pointer with 7:04 left in the third quarter to put the Warriors up by 20 points for the first time in the game, it wasn't just players that erupted on Golden State's bench. Smart, who was already standing, flapped his arms to exhort more noise from the crowd of 17,408.

BAD MOVE: Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro was right to take a timeout after the Warriors scored the first six points of the third quarter, but whatever he said didn't have much effect. After a Kaman dunk, Golden State ripped off 12 consecutive points, including three dunks, to open a 76-56 lead with 6:54 left in the period. That prompted another Del Negro timeout, but by then, it was far too late to change the outcome.

ROOKIE WATCH: Two nights after bursting onto the NBA scene with 20 points, 14 rebounds and four assists Wednesday against Portland, Griffin came back to Earth. He still got his second double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, but he was held to seven (on 3-for-8 shooting) and nine through the first three quarters before adding some stats in extended garbage time.

NOTABLE: Undrafted rookie and Bay Area local Jeremy Lin, already a fan favorite at Oracle Arena, drew a huge ovation just for checking in with 2:32 remaining. He was credited with a steal after tying up Cook and watching the Warriors win the ensuing jump ball. . . . The Warriors were sporting their road uniforms, in order to give their fans a look at the new royal-blue-and-gold color scheme and logo.
