Pacers-Bobcats Preview

After setting a franchise record for home wins in 2009-10, the Charlotte Bobcats should be excited to begin play at Time Warner Cable Arena this season.

The Bobcats look to carry over that success as they open their home schedule Friday night against the Indiana Pacers.

Charlotte went 44-38 last season and made the playoffs for the first time in its six-year history. The Bobcats recorded 31 of those victories at home, where they averaged 98.3 points - 6.1 more than they did while going 13-28 on the road.

Poised to make another run to the playoffs, the Bobcats get the chance to build on that home success Friday - their only home date of their first five games.

Charlotte has held the Pacers to 96.0 points per game while winning four of five at home in the series, but needs to show improvement after a 101-86 loss at Dallas on Wednesday. Tyrus Thomas had 22 points off the bench while Gerald Wallace added 16 and nine boards, but the Bobcats shot 39.7 percent and committed 20 turnovers.

More efforts like that won't be tolerated by a team with such high expectations.

"With everybody having the taste of the playoffs last year, I think the drive is here and everybody wants to get back there," veteran swingman Stephen Jackson told the Bobcats' official website.

A former Pacer, Jackson has totaled 42 points in his last two games against Indiana. However, he had 10 during a 104-88 home win over the Pacers on Nov. 22. That was Charlotte's only victory in three games versus Indiana last season.

Third-year center Roy Hibbert has 32 points and 18 rebounds in six career games versus Charlotte, but appears ready to break out after posting 28 and nine boards during Indiana's 122-109 loss at San Antonio on Wednesday.

"Offensively I feel like I'm coming into my own, but defensively I need to get better," Hibbert said.

Pacers star Danny Granger had 26 points against the Spurs, and has averaged 25.1 points in his last seven games against the Bobcats.

Indiana won the season series with Charlotte in 2009-10, despite committing 52 turnovers. After averaging 15.0 turnovers last season, Indiana was especially sloppy versus the Spurs, committing 23 in the loss.

"Our main focus now is turnovers," Granger told the Pacers' official website. "We knew before the game that if we turned the ball over, especially 23 times, that we were going to lose. "That's the way it is as we simply can't turn the ball over that many times. That's going to be our biggest challenge this year."

Acquired in a five-player, four-team trade in August, Darren Collison had 19 points and seven assists as the Pacers' new point guard.

Collison scored 24 points in each of his two games against Charlotte as a rookie with New Orleans last season. He shot 17 of 31 in those contests.

Hansbrough helps Pacers beat Bobcats 104-101

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Back in North Carolina and on the floor again after a long, frustrating layoff, Tyler Hansbrough performed as if he was back in college.

His clutch play helped spoil the home opener for another ex-North Carolina star, Michael Jordan.

Hansbrough's impressive performance, combined with Danny Granger's 33 points, led the Indiana Pacers to a 104-101 comeback victory over Charlotte on Friday night that dropped the Jordan-owned Bobcats to an 0-2 start.

With Jordan sitting at the end of Charlotte's bench and fellow Hall of Famer and Pacers president Larry Bird in the fourth row behind Indiana's, their teams staged a dramatic fourth quarter that featured an unlikely star.

Hansbrough, who led North Carolina to a national championship but was injured for most of his rookie season, hit a key jumper, grabbed a clutch rebound and hit two free throws with 10.7 seconds left.

Not bad for a guy who appeared in only 29 games last season and didn't see the floor in Indiana's season-opening loss to San Antonio. He also is working on his fitness following a bout with vertigo.

"It felt great. I wouldn't have it any other place," said Hansbrough, who had 12 points and four rebounds in 20 minutes. "Coming here, I was able to step in and help my team win."

After Hansbrough grabbed Tyrus Thomas' miss and hit two free throws, D.J. Augustin and Stephen Jackson missed tying 3-point attempts for Charlotte. Jackson clanged an open look from the top of the key as time expired in a disappointing home opener for the Bobcats.

"I owe my team one. I've got to make that," said Jackson, who had 10 points but missed nine of 13 attempts against his former team. "The coach grew up two great plays at the end of the game. He put us in great position to send the game into overtime or win it. We've just got to execute better and knock down those shots."

Gerald Wallace led Charlotte with 29 points, but was unhappy with his six missed free throws, including one with 1:22 left that would have tied it.

"I let them down tonight," Wallace said. "I missed a lot of free throws that obviously could have been the difference in the game."

Granger hit six of 11 3-pointers before fouling out in the final minute. He helped Indiana rally from an 11-point first-half deficit with 13 points in the fourth.

His absence further jumbled the lineup for Pacers coach Jim O'Brien. He used Hansbrough ahead of Josh McRoberts at power forward and T.J. Ford at point guard with Darren Collison struggling through a 2-for-10 shooting night.

"T.J. played with a fire," O'Brien said. "We put the ball in his hands and he made good decisions. Tyler gave us a spark in the first half and then the second. They both had great tenacity."

The Pacers, who trailed for most of the game, took a 100-98 lead on Roy Hibbert's two free throws with 1:28 left. Hansbrough then drilled a baseline jumper with 1:04 remaining to make it 102-99.

Granger fouled out on the next possession, but the Bobcats committed six turnovers to Indiana's none in the fourth quarter.

Augustin had 17 points and six assists for Charlotte, but was just 5 of 14 from the field and had four turnovers as replaces Raymond Felton at point guard.

"We have to figure out a way to not keep turning the ball over," coach Larry Brown said.

It wasn't the way Jordan wanted to begin his first full season as owner as he starts to put his stamp on the team.

He sat at the end of the bench wearing a T-shirt which read "Win as One," the team motto this season. An advertisement for his new video game was played during an early timeout, and the team overhauled the team store to feature Jordan Brand items. Old Jump Man posters were given away as part of a promotion.

But his team showed flaws down the stretch despite a 45-34 rebounding advantage. It included an inability to keep Hansbrough, who set an NCAA record with 982 made free throws, off the line.

"I made a lot of them in college," Hansbrough said, "so it felt good to knock those down tonight."

NOTES: Augustin was hit with a fourth-quarter technical foul under the league's strengthened no-complaining rule. ... Brown said C Kwame Brown (ankle) has started to work out some. He missed the entire preseason. ... NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin flew back to Charlotte after practice earlier Friday at Talladega to take in the game from his courtside seat.

THE FACTS: Indiana guard Danny Granger drained six of 11 from behind the arc for a game and season-high 33 points, and the Pacers came from behind for a 104-101 win over the Charlotte Bobcats on Friday night. Tyler Hansbrough came off the bench to score 12 points, including four in the final minute to help seal the win for the Pacers. Gerald Wallace led five Charlotte players in double figures with 29 points.

QUOTABLE: "We had two great looks at the end. D.J. [Augustin] had a great look. Boris [Diaw] had a great screen and [Stephen] Jackson made a great fake and he generally makes those open looks. We have to figure out a way to not keep turning the ball over."

THE STAT: It was a welcome home party for Hansbrough as he helped spark a Pacer comeback. The second-year forward was 3-for-6 from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line, but none of his 12 points were as big as his last four. He hit a clutch 15-foot jumper with 1:04 left in the fourth quarter and then calmly hit two free throws with 10.7 seconds to give the Pacers a three-point lead and eventually the win.

TURNING POINT: The Bobcats led from the 1:24 of the first quarter all the way until Roy Hibbert hit a pair of free throws with 1:28 left on the clock. Indiana twice cut the deficit down to one point in the fourth quarter, but the Bobcats answered with a bucket on their next possession. T.J. Ford sparked the comeback with a steal at the 1:58 mark setting up Hibbert¹s free throws.

QUOTABLE II: "It was great being back in North Carolina. I was a little surprised being in there at the end, but I was given the opportunity to show what I can do and I took that chance to help my team get a win. There was no better place to show what I can do then here in North Carolina, and I¹m glad I was able to help the team out tonight. It really was great."

HOT: Granger scored 13 of his 33 points in the fourth quarter to help lead the Pacers comeback. He also had a four-point play that brought Indiana to within one, 96-95, with three minutes left in the game.

NOT: Jackson, the Bobcats leading scorer a year ago, got into foul trouble early and never clicked after picking up his third foul at the 9:28 mark in the second quarter. He finished with just 10 points, but did add six rebounds and six assists.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Granger hit 12-for-23 field goals, including 6-for-11 3-pointers for 33 points and added five rebounds, three assists, a pair of blocks and one steal.

ROOKIE WATCH: Pacer rookie Paul George gave a spark off the bench, scoring eight points in 21 minutes of action. Two of his three field goals on the night were from 3-point range.

NOTABLE: The Bobcats fell to 3-4 all time in home openers. Charlotte stepped to the line 45 times and canned 35 of its free throws. 42 of the Bobcats 101 points came in the paint.
