The debut of Miami's superstar trio didn't bring the Heat a season-opening victory. A trip to Philadelphia might help them get it done.

LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh try to lead the Heat to a fifth consecutive win over the 76ers on Wednesday night.

Collectively, Miami's new Big 3 didn't fare well in an 88-80 road loss to defending Eastern Conference champion Boston on Tuesday.

James scored 21 of his 31 points in the second half as the Heat tried to mount a comeback after a slow start. However, Wade was limited to 13 on 4-of-16 shooting and Bosh eight with eight rebounds. The trio combined for 15 of Miami's 17 turnovers, including eight by James.

"I'm sorry if everybody thought we were going to go 82-0. It just ain't happening," Wade said.

While it's one game, it might take some time for the team to mesh. Miami shot 36.5 percent overall and scored nine points in the first quarter. In no quarter last season did the Heat without James and Bosh score so few points. Neither did James with Cleveland in 2009-10.

"Right now it's a feel-out process for myself, for D-Wade, for Chris and for the rest of the guys," James said.

The Heat went 7-6 when Wade scored fewer than 20 points last season.

"We know it isn't going to be easy," Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said. "It's not a reason to panic right now. ... I already imagine we'll be much better (Wednesday)."

The potential for improvement against the 76ers is certainly possible.

Wade averaged 28.5 points to help Miami go 4-0 versus Philadelphia last season. Bosh has averaged 25.7 points in his last nine road games against the 76ers, while James has poured in 29.3 in 12 career contests at Philadelphia.

While the Heat added James and Bosh, the 76ers brought in lesser known role players like 7-foot-1 Spencer Hawes and veteran Andres Nocioni after finishing 27-55 and missing the playoffs for the first time in three seasons.

Philadelphia's biggest acquisition is on the bench where former Sixer Doug Collins returns for the first time since coaching Washington from 2001-03.

Collins has experience in helping the franchise make a turnaround. He was drafted No. 1 overall in 1973 by a Sixers team coming off an all-time NBA-worst 9-73 record. Four years later, they were in the NBA finals.

Replacing Eddie Jordan after one season, Collins is Philadelphia's seventh coach since Larry Brown left in 2003.

"I know the pulse of this city," said Collins, who will be on the sidelines despite being diagnosed with vertigo last week. "I've had a chance to live it. I'm blessed to be the coach here and I don't take that responsibility lightly."

The Sixers also stripped Ed Stefanski of his presidency and made him general manager, while hiring former New Jersey Nets boss Rod Thorn as team president.

"I think we were all ready to move on from last year," forward Thaddeus Young said.

Though Andre Iguodala averaged 17.1 points - his lowest in four seasons - in 2009-10, he set career highs with 6.5 rebounds and 5.8 assists per contest.

The Sixers need forward Elton Brand to finally break out after two disappointing seasons since coming over from the Los Angeles Clippers. After a shoulder injury limited him to 29 games in 2008-09, Brand averaged career lows for points (13.1) and rebounds (6.1) in 76 games last season.

Brand averaged 9.3 points and 5.5 rebounds against the Heat last season.

Second overall pick Evan Turner will come off the bench to start, but the AP player of the year could help Philadelphia improve on the 97.7 points it averaged in 2009-10. He averaged 20.3 points, 9.2 boards and 5.9 assists for Ohio State last season.

"It's not about me, it's about the team," said Turner, who shot 31 percent in seven preseason games.

Heat beat 76ers 97-87 in 1st win for Big 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) LeBron James and his new teammates are playing like a work in progress, not a title contender.

Relax, Heat fans. There's plenty of time for the triumphant trio to work out the kinks.

James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh have their first win with Miami, and the Big Three got help from some big 3s in the Heat's 97-87 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night.

"We're not at our peak, we're not even close," Wade said. "Eventually when it's time to be there, we will."

Playing with purpose a night after an 88-80 loss in a hyped showdown with Boston, the three looked as if they still need some games to get used to playing with each other. Only Wade, with 30 points, looked particularly sharp against the Sixers. The Heat hit three straight 3-pointers in the third quarter to bust open an eight-point halftime lead.

James relied almost entirely on his left hand and scored 16 points, and Bosh had 15.

James and the Heat just couldn't squash the Sixers, who went on a 15-3 run late in the fourth to make it surprisingly competitive.

Wade was bothered by a strained right hamstring in the preseason. His tough driving layup gave him 30 points - on 10-for-20 shooting - sealed the win. He as just 4 for 16 in the opener.

"I got in a comfort zone," Wade said. "I missed some shots around the basket, but it's coming."

A James - not LeBron - sparked the Heat. James Jones hit 6-of-9 3s and scored 20 points. The Heat shot 50 percent from 3-point range - enough to make up for tough shooting nights from James and Bosh (combined 11 for 24). James had nine turnovers.

"When we have our long ball going like that, it's unlimited what we can do offensively," James said.

Up next, Friday's home opener against Orlando.

For all the buzz surrounding the Heat, there were plenty of patches of empty seats in the announced sellout crowd of 20,389 in the Sixers' home opener.

Evan Turner led the Sixers with 16 points in his first NBA game. Lou Williams and Thaddeus Young had 15.

All three came off the bench to help the Sixers outscore the Heat 33-17 in the fourth.

"We know every night we go out, a team is going to want to beat the Miami Heat," James said. "Especially on the road, you're going to have the opposing crowd on you all game."

James heard the loudest boos when he was introduced from fans that can deliver them as vociferously as any city in the league. He heard them occasionally during the game, but the volume was turned down and the noise mostly disappeared as the Heat pulled away.

"I've been booed my whole NBA career," James said. "They boo you because they love the way you play basketball."

One fan's sign called James "LeBum, the lyin' King" while another read "I witnessed no championship."

James was slow to warm up, and played the first quarter like it was a preseason game. He was whistled for a travel, an offensive foul and threw the ball out of bounds off a drive down the lane.

James drew a crowd of onlookers during warmups, including several members of the Philadelphia Flyers.

Before the game, James said he already forgotten all about the Boston loss. He didn't seem to care about suggestions that teams were playing harder with a chance to shine against the marquee team in the NBA.

"I've been a friend of that bulls-eye for a long time," James said.

Jones was the one right on target.

He hit four 3s during a 16-2 run in the second quarter that gave the Heat a 49-41 lead at the break. For most of the first half, the fired-up Sixers gave Miami a bit of a run. In Doug Collins' first game as coach, the Sixers led 26-24 until Jones sparked a 10-0 run with the first 3 of his spurt.

Jones, who considered retirement because of a wrist injury, showed he has plenty of game left.

"This is a game that I love and I had to sit down and say if I couldn't be effective, if I couldn't regain my form, I would have to consider doing something else," he said.

The Heat kept rolling from long distance in the third quarter. Jones hit two around one from Eddie House and the lead was 76-51. Miami was up 80-54 after three.

As for the Sixers, Collins said before the game his pieces didn't all fit. It showed when he started Jason Kapono - one of the team leaders in DNP-CD's last season. Kapono and starters Spencer Hawes and Jru Holiday combined for eight points. The starting lineup did not attempt a single free throw.

"My starters are not necessarily my best players, that's why I said don't get caught up in who's starting," Collins said.

Notes: Flyers, Eagles and rapper Ludacris were all at the game. ... Andre Iguodala, playing a sprained right wrist, addressed the fans before the game, telling them, "we're going to get to where you want us to be." ... Turner, the No. 2 overall pick, turned 22.

THE FACTS: The Heat didn't have a hangover effect from their season-opening loss at Boston on Tuesday with a resounding 97-87 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. Miami didn't appear tired in the second leg of a back-to-back on the road with Dwyane Wade leading the way. Wade scored 30 points and James Jones added 20. LeBron James had 16.

QUOTABLE: "When Mike Miller went out, James Jones took it upon himself to step up. He went to his spots on the court and let it go when we found him. We have a lot of trust in James to make shots."
-- Wade, on Jones' 20-point night, including six 3-pointers.

THE STAT: The five Sixers starters -- Jason Kapono, Elton Brand, Spencer Hawes, Andre Iguodala and Jrue Holiday -- didn't attempt a free throw the entire game.

TURNING POINT: Miami broke open a 51-43 lead with a 25-8 run to take a 76-51 lead late in the third. The Heat outscored Philadelphia 31-13 in the third to go ahead by 26 points.

HOT: Jones was sensational off the bench as he hit four consecutive 3-pointers in the second quarter. Jones was 7-for-10 with 20 points overall.

NOT: Kapono had just two points on 1-for-4 shooting for the Sixers.

QUOTABLE II: "I liked how we kept fighting and never gave up. Even when we were down big, we kept going and coming back. While we lost the game, I liked the fight that we showed."

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Thaddeus Young was a bright spot for the Sixers with 15 points in 26 minutes.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Flyers stars Mike Richards and Jeff Carter attended the game. The Flyers lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in six hard-fought games in last year's Stanley Cup Finals. Eagles running back LeSean McCoy and rapper Ludacris were also in attendance.

GOOD MOVE: Miami took full advantage of the Sixers' weakness in the middle. The Heat didn't just settle for jumpers. Instead, they consistently drove to the basket and knocked down 23-for-31 free throws.

BAD MOVE: Andres Nocioni was very effective off the Sixers' bench with five points in the first half. But the scrappy forward was on the bench for much of the Heat's third-quarter run. When Nocioni re-entered in the fourth, the game was out of reach for the Sixers.

ROOKIE WATCH: Evan Turner, the Sixers' No. 2 overall pick from Ohio State, converted his first NBA field goal with 9:54 left in the second quarter. Turner showed flashes of his ability with a crossover and jumper with Wade guarding him in the fourth. Turner finished with a team-best 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

NOTABLE: The Sixers finished last in the league in defending the 3-point line last season. This was a trouble spot again in the opener as the Heat hit 8-for-16 from beyond the arc.

UP NEXT: The Heat will play their first home game against the visiting Orlando Magic on Friday. The Sixers will remain at home to face the Atlanta Hawks on Friday.
