After a busy offseason, the Golden State Warriors are hoping a new coach and a big offseason acquisition lead to their first playoff appearance since 2007.

The Warriors will look for their first season-opening win in five years when they host the Houston Rockets on Wednesday night.

Keith Smart, who spent seven years as a Warriors assistant, is finally getting his chance to run the team. Don Nelson, the NBA's all-time leader with 1,335 wins, was bought out of the final year of his contract last month.

Smart is grateful for the opportunity and the time he had under Nelson, but plans on changing things up due to larger personnel.

"I've had the chance to work with a tremendous offensive coach the last four years," Smart said. "We will play a more traditional style, with bigger players in different spots. We have two talented guards who can play at a faster pace and we don't want to take away their creativity. It starts with how we can rebound the basketball. We're not going to win if we don't rebound. David Lee is a rebounder. A healthy (Andres) Biedrins is back and he's a proven NBA rebounder."

Lee was acquired from New York, where he averaged career highs in points (20.2) and assists (3.6) last year.

He's also pulled down 11.7 rebounds per game over the previous two seasons and should provide an immediate boost to a team that averaged an NBA-worst 38.4 boards in 2009-10.

An All-Star last season, Lee believes the Warriors have an opportunity to do something special.

"My focus since day one has been to get a good rapport with the guys and to be a leader and to lead by example and to help that translate into more victories," Lee said. "We have a chance to do that."

The Warriors won 26 games last season, their fewest since going 21-61 in 2001-02. With Lee joining Biedrins up front, and Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry in the backcourt, Golden State could be on the verge of turning things around.

"It's a whole new chapter and we have good directions to where we are going. It's a great beginning," said Biedrins, who played just 33 games last season due to multiple injuries. "All the coaches, everybody, is excited about the new direction. We're ready to go."

Ellis led the team with a career-high 25.5 points per game and Curry, who was the NBA rookie of the year runner-up, averaged a team-best 5.9 assists.

Curry, who also was seventh in the league in 3-point shooting at 43.7 percent, injured his ankle in Thursday's preseason game but could be back in time for the opener.

"I couldn't walk on it Friday and then Sunday I came into practice and I was walking fine without a limp," Curry said. "It feels pretty good today, hopefully make a little more progress before tomorrow. I think I could play on it right now if the game was today."

The Rockets are coming off a 112-110 season-opening loss to the two-time champion Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night, squandering an 11-point halftime lead.

"They're the world champs, and we knew it was going to be tough," coach Rick Adelman said. "But I thought we responded pretty well. I think (for) about seven minutes, we just didn't play the way we're capable of, and they got back in the game."

Center Yao Ming, who missed all of last season recovering from surgery to repair a broken bone in his left foot, was 4 for 11 from the floor and finished with nine points and 11 rebounds. He fouled out with 6:30 to play and was held under the 24-minute limit set for him during the preseason.

Yao isn't expected to play in back-to-back games early in the season, and will likely sit out this game as the coaching staff tries to keep him fresh.

Aaron Brooks - the league's most improved player last year - picked up right where he left off with 24 points and nine assists.

Luis Scola, who had two double-doubles against Golden State last season, also started off on a strong note with 18 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.

The Rockets have won nine straight against the Warriors, including the last five at Oracle Arena.

Ellis scores 46, leads Warriors past Rockets

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) Monta Ellis walked out of Golden State's locker room and was immediately greeted by his giggling infant son, who wobbled down the hallway and jumped into his father's arms.

Life is good these days for Ellis, on and off the court.

"I'm in a good mindset," Ellis said Wednesday night after matching his career high with 46 points while helping the Warriors beat the Houston Rockets 131-128 in Keith Smart's coaching debut.

"I ain't got no worries, no complaints. Everything is positive, so me, I have to be a positive, be a leader and lead these guys in the right direction."

He did just that against Houston, despite the Rockets owning a huge advantage at the free throw line.

Ellis' 46 points are the third-most by a Warriors player in a season opener. Only Wilt Chamberlain, who had 48 points in 1961 and 56 in '62, had more.

Ellis, the Warriors' leading scorer last season, went 18 of 24 from the floor and repeatedly made big shots down the stretch whenever the Rockets made a run.

"This young man made a complete turnaround in his life, and once your life is in order, things start to work perfectly for you," Smart said. "The guy has been ready to play since the summer and carried that over when he came into town early."

Stephen Curry added 25 points and 11 assists, David Lee had 17 points and 15 rebounds, and Dorell Wright scored 15 points to help the Warriors to their first season-opening win since 2005. They also snapped a nine-game losing streak to the Rockets dating to 2007.

Golden State won despite Houston's 52-26 advantage in free throw attempts, beating the Rockets for the first time since Dec. 31, 2007.

Luis Scola had 36 points and 16 rebounds, while Kevin Martin added 28 points for the Rockets, who played without 7-foot-6 center Yao Ming.

"We ran up against a good offensive team and they shot the ball lights out," Houston guard Aaron Brooks said. "We could have played better defense but credit to them, they were feeling it. At times we broke down but they just made shots."

One of three team captains, Ellis nearly blew it down the stretch, however. He missed three consecutive free throws in the final 35 seconds before sinking two with 10.2 seconds remaining to seal the win and match his career high set against Dallas on Feb. 3 last season.

Houston, which lost to the Los Angeles Lakers 112-110 in its opener on Tuesday, had no answer and missed Yao's presence in the middle.

Yao missed all of last season recovering from foot surgery and is being limited to 24 minutes a game while he continues his rehab. He didn't play against the Warriors because Houston is taking a careful approach and won't play him in back-to-back games.

Yao's replacement, Chuck Hayes, had 16 points, eight rebounds and six assists but it wasn't enough to prevent Houston from falling to 0-2.

"It was just a poor defensive effort," Rockets coach Rick Adelman said. "We scored 128 points and we lose. We have to figure out a way to shore that up."

A loud and exuberant crowd of 18,000-plus was on hand to celebrate Smart's first NBA coaching victory. The former Golden State assistant took over when the Warriors parted ways with career wins leader Don Nelson last month.

"We've been going through preseason and training camp for this moment right here," Ellis said. "To get the first win to start the season off in the right direction says a lot."

Not much has changed for Golden State under the new regime. The Warriors are still running, still gunning and still scoring at a breakneck pace.

Ellis had 17 points in the first quarter and 23 in the half, but Houston still led 68-67 at the break.

Scola, who had 18 points in the loss to the Lakers, surpassed that in the first half with 19. He scored eight points over the final 2:42, including a pair of free throws with 3 seconds remaining to give the Rockets a one-point halftime lead.

The Warriors pulled away in the third quarter behind Curry. The second-year guard made a pair of 3-pointers, fed Ellis on a fast break, then added a pair of free throws to give Golden State a 100-93 lead with 1:06 left. He also aggravated the right ankle sprain that kept him out of the Warriors' final preseason game.

Notes: Smart became the 13th coach in Warriors history to win in his first game as head coach. Golden State's 131 points are the most the franchise has scored in a season opener since putting up 162 against Denver on Nov. 2, 1990. ... With Game 1 of the World Series being played across the bay, the Warriors opened the doors to Oracle Arena more than three hours before tip-off and showed the game on the center court scoreboard.

THE FACTS: Golden State guard Monta Ellis poured home a career high-tying 46 points to power the Warriors past the Houston Rockets 132-128 Wednesday night. Stephen Curry added 25 points and 11 assists as Golden State won its opener. Houston fell to 0-2 on the season despite 36 points from Luis Scola and 28 from Kevin Martin.

QUOTABLE: "I've got to tell you, this young man has made a complete turnaround in his life, and once your life is in order, things start to work perfectly for you. His relationship (with new wife Juanika) and his life is in great order. ... I can't say how glad I am to be coaching this guy at this particular point in his career."

THE STAT: Ellis' 46 points is the third-highest Opening Night point total in Warriors franchise history, trailing only Wilt Chamberlain, who had 56 against Detroit in 1962 and 48 against the Lakers in 1961.

TURNING POINT: Warriors newcomer David Lee had 15 rebounds and six assists as he tried mostly to keep feeding Ellis and Curry. But he also provided 17 points, none more critical than his two-handed tip-in of an offensive rebound while leaping over Chuck Hayes with 4:17 remaining. Lee hit the ensuing free throw to stretch a five-point Warriors lead out to eight. Ellis knocked down a jumper on the following possession to make it double digits, and Houston never could make it a one-possession game after that.

QUOTABLE II: "It's a relief. We've been going through preseason and training camp, everything for this moment right here. To get the first win, to start the season off the right direction, it says a lot."

HOT: Ellis went 18-for-24 to get his 46 points, curling time and again into the same 15-foot, mid-range jumper that was his hallmark during the 2007-08 season, when he averaged 20.2 points on 53.1 percent shooting.

NOT: The Rockets shot 57.1 percent through the first half, but were held to just 29.4 in the third quarter, including a 1-for-5 from both Martin and Aaron Brooks, who finished with just 13 points.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Anyone who had concerns that the numbers for Golden State's stars would dip now that coach Don Nelson and his helter skelter style are on Maui sipping mai tais had to be pleased to see the Warriors continuing his tradition of offensive-minded shootouts. Golden State's big three of Ellis, Curry and Lee combined for 88 points on the evening, leading Houston coach Rick Adelman to dryly note, "We have to figure out a way to shore that up."

INSIDE THE ARENA: Maybe the biggest ovation of the evening belonged not to the Warriors, but to the score updates from the San Francisco Giants' 11-7 victory over the Texas Rangers in Game 1 of the World Series, taking place just across San Francisco Bay.

NOTABLE: Ellis was the first Warrior to crack the 40-point barrier on Opening Night since Latrell Sprewell hung 45 on Minnesota to open the 1997-98 campaign. ... It was Golden State's first win in a season opener since 2005. ... Houston's Hayes, starting in place of Yao Ming (held out on the second half of a back-to-back), also tied his career high in points, but he only needed 16 to match that mark. ... The Rockets' 52 free throw attempts were the most in regulation by a Houston team since it also took 52 on Nov. 25, 1987 against Phoenix.
