Magic-Celtics Preview

WALTHAM, Mass. (AP) Playing better may not save the Orlando Magic's season. Playing harder just might.

The team that charged into the Eastern Conference finals with 14 straight wins rolled over Saturday night when it lost its hustle - and its third game in a row - against the Boston Celtics.

Another loss Monday night would give Boston a sweep and end Orlando's hopes for a second consecutive berth in the NBA finals.

``I'm somebody who says I'm never shocked,'' Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said after practice Sunday, ``but I was shocked (Saturday) night that we didn't handle the situation better and play with more intensity and determination.''

Down 7-0 in the first two minutes. Trailing by 16 points in the first quarter. Never closer than 14 after that. And behind by 32 before Boston coach Doc Rivers began clearing his bench in the fourth quarter.

When the 94-71 rout was complete, the Magic could hardly believe their predicament. They had the second-best regular season record in the East, then swept Charlotte and Atlanta in the first two rounds to make it to the conference finals.

But now this?

``I expected us to be up 3-0,'' Jason Williams said, ``but down 0-3 is a big surprise.''

And an obstacle that's never been overcome in the history of the NBA.

The Celtics are focusing simply on one game. A win Monday night would send them to the NBA finals with a chance for their second championship in three years and their 18th overall.

``This team is not complacent,'' Paul Pierce said. ``We're too close to our goals. You've got a team that's won the championship so we understand what it takes. We understand the mental toughness that you've got to have at this point in the season. So I don't see any slippage from us and, hopefully, we can close this thing out on Monday.''

Boston has won the first three games in 10 other series; it won four of those in four games and the other six in five. This year, teams took 3-0 leads in five series that have been completed and swept four of them. In the other, Boston beat Miami in five games.

Rivers is among coaches who have been ahead in such series who would prefer that his players ignore those numbers.

``Every time now a series goes 2-0 or 2-1 or 3-1, you hear all these stats,'' he said, ``and I guarantee you, wherever that coach is, he's cussing at the TV. ... You've still got to play the game.''

Or games. The Boston Bruins led the Philadelphia Flyers 3-0 in this year's NHL Eastern semifinals then lost the next four, ending their colossal collapse in the same building where the Celtics and Magic will play Monday.

But the Bruins had key injuries and a lack of discipline during important stretches. The Celtics are as healthy as they've been all season and playing extremely coordinated team defense.

``That's a whole different sport,'' Rajon Rondo said. ``I don't know what happened in the locker room of the Bruins. I'm not there. I know in our locker room we're going to stay focused and try to close it out.''

Last season, the Celtics took a 3-2 lead over Orlando then lost the next two games of the Eastern semifinals. But that's when Kevin Garnett was sitting on the bench in street clothes because of a knee injury.

Now the vocal leader and best defender on a defensive-minded team is healthy. Pierce is leading the Celtics in scoring in the series, Rondo is setting up the offense with his passing and Ray Allen is chipping in with key baskets.

But ``without Kevin, we can't win a championship,'' Pierce said. ``You can't replace Kevin.''

Garnett is overflowing with the qualities the Magic have lacked in the series - desire, determination and effort.

``They thumped us pretty good,'' Van Gundy said. ``Everything has to change, from our defensive disposition to our effort to our offensive energy and decision making.''

Dwight Howard needs a big change. He had only 7 points and 7 rebounds Saturday night after scoring 30 in Game 2.

``I'm not going to give up on myself. I'm not going to give up on my teammates,'' he said. ``There's no need for us to be sad. We're playing a sport that we love.''

There weren't any long faces at Sunday's practice. That helped the Magic move on from Saturday's failure and concentrate on trying to send the series back to Orlando for Game 5 on Wednesday night.

``This is not the team that you saw win 59 games during the course of the season and win the first two series,'' Jameer Nelson said. ``You feel better about yourself once you start practicing.

``You can't do anything about things in the past. You just have to learn from them.''

Magic show backbone in OT to win Game 4 and extend series

BOSTON (NBA.com exclusive) -- The difference between Games 3 and 4 for the Orlando Magic was simple.

In the first, they gave up and ran. Tonight, they stood tall and answered the bell -- and Orlando's 96-92 overtime victory was perhaps the game of the playoffs to date.

"I think everybody on our team took Game 3 very personally," J.J. Redick said. "We've been a very tough group, a group that plays hard. And I think everybody kind of internalized things.

"There wasn't a lot of rah?rah, there wasn't a lot of rhetoric, there wasn't a lot of cliches going around the locker room. It wasn't about yelling at guys. It was just, let's go out and play and be who we are."

Neither team was particularly sharp, as 57 fouls and 35 turnovers can attest, but events were fiery until the end as elbows flew, and every player had a moment that either shook or silenced the arena. But while the Boston Celtics offense stagnated as it did during so many second-half collapses during the regular season, the difference was in Orlando.

Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy spoke after Game 3 of keeping his team from giving in to human nature, down 3-0 in the series, and escaping. They did just that in getting an eight-point lead in the first nine minutes, but the Magic again had to avoid the temptation of ease when the Celtics gained their first lead of the game to close the third quarter.

"The hardest thing is when you go behind in a game like this, and you're down 3-0," Van Gundy said. "What you're fighting against is that human nature to let it go.

"If you don't believe you're going to win the series, it's just too easy to let go. Yeah, you've got to play it one game at a time, but there's got to be a belief in there."

And that's the question, hokey as it sounds, that needs to be asked: Do they believe? The answer will determine whether the Magic withstanding Ray Allen's five threes and Paul Pierce's dead-legged heroics matters, or if this game will be whisked away like a final breath.

"We didn't win this game just to win a game to say we were in this series," Dwight Howard said. "You know, we want to make this a series and win this series. We all have to believe that. I told the guys before the game to put out all disbelief, anxiety and fear. We just got to keep playing."

The change in Howard was less poetic than that of his team, but the impact was felt all the same. In the post, rather than deliberately and stubbornly charging at Kendrick Perkins, he made fluid decisions, creating space for running hook shots or clearing the strong side for a driving Jameer Nelson, lurking behind defenders for an alley-oop.

Howard finished with 32 points on 19 shots, and of his 13 field goals, five were assists from Nelson, all dunks.

Nelson, with nine assists and 23 points on 14 shots, was indispensable, hitting consecutive threes in overtime after missing a potential game-winning shot at the end of regulation. He made the appropriate edits to his pick-and-roll game, drawing the defenders with constant probing of the paint, finding shooters -- Orlando hit 10 threes -- and diving to the rim when the space was there.

For the first time all playoffs, Rajon Rondo was thoroughly and definitively outplayed by his point-guard counterpart.

"I just think the first three games he wasn't as aggressive as he needed to be," Howard said. "And tonight he was aggressive. He was attacking the basket. That's what he did in the first two series. We need him to just continue to do that."

Continuity was largely the issue on Boston's side. Rondo had a dud of a performance after early foul trouble, a far cry from his magnificent earlier performances, and while Ray Allen kept hitting everything from everywhere, Boston got just 10 points off the bench and 17 out of the frontcourt of Kevin Garnett and Kendrick Perkins.

Even Pierce, who almost turned the tides with a drive-and-hammer-dunk in the final minutes of regulation, needed 25 shots to get to 32 points. And as the game wore on, his jumper fell shorter and shorter, culminating in a sequence in the final 20 seconds of overtime when he front-ironed consecutive triples.

"You have so many things on your mind, you weren't thinking about what was happening tomorrow," Allen said. "It was all about that moment. We have such great talent on this team, such great individual talent on both ends of the floor that each man feels like they can get the defensive stop. Each guy feels like they can make the shot to win the game for us.

"Sometimes that's been at our team's detriment."

Still, Boston has plenty of breathing room, as no team has ever comeback from a 3-0 deficit in the history of basketball.

But Orlando believes. That matters. And for another couple days at least, so will this game.
