Magic-Hawks Preview

ATLANTA (AP) After five straight years of steady progress, the Atlanta Hawks have run into a major roadblock in their quest to become one of the NBA's elite teams.

A disheartening performance against the Orlando Magic has left the Hawks one loss away from ending this season just as they did the last one: getting swept in the second round of the playoffs.

It's also raised major questions about whether this team should dole out a huge contract to impending free agent Joe Johnson and bring back coach Mike Woodson for another season.

Woodson wants to return and hopes management will keep together a core group that has helped the team improve from 13 wins in 2004-05 to 53 victories this season.

``At the end of the day, this team is still headed in the right direction,'' Woodson said Sunday. ``If we can bring Joe back and hopefully I'm able to stay, we can complete the process we started six years ago. If we can add a couple of more pieces, good pieces, then anything can happen. I sure hope they don't go back the other way and bust it up.''

Clearly, though, the status quo won't do based on Atlanta's dismal showing against the Magic. Orlando has won by an average of 29 points, going up 3-0 in the series with a 105-75 blowout Saturday that was the worst home playoff loss in Hawks history. Game 4 is Monday night, and about all Atlanta has to play for is a bit of pride.

Even the Magic are surprised at how easily they've handled the third-seeded Hawks, who finished just behind Orlando in the Eastern Conference standings.

``On paper, they're a very talented team,'' Orlando's Matt Barnes said after an afternoon practice at Philips Arena. ``We just match up really well against them. We can do things to neutralize their talent.''

The Hawks aren't helping matters, either.

Al Horford, who won a pair of NCAA titles at Florida, said he's befuddled by the lack of passion shown by this team - especially playing on its home court, where the Hawks went 34-7 during the regular season.

``I don't see the effort,'' the third-year center said. ``We won 53 games for a reason. ... But we get to the postseason, where the stakes are high, and we're not coming out there and giving the effort we need.''

Some of it may come down to a lack of chemistry, that elusive element that bonds a team and helps it stick together when things get tough.

Individually, the Hawks have loads of talent. Johnson and Horford both played in the All-Star Game this season, and Josh Smith probably should have been there, too. Jamal Crawford won the NBA's Sixth Man Award.

But put them together and there are those maddening spurts where they can break down into a bickering, sulking group that struggles to beat the worst teams in the league.

``The chemistry, it's OK,'' Horford said, hardly a glowing assessment. ``At times, it can be really good. Other times, not so good. There are ups and down. We have a lot of good guys on the team. We mesh to a certain extent. I just think sometimes, when things don't go our way, everybody seems to crawl into their own little hole.''

That might not bode well for Woodson, who's contract is up at the end of the season. The team has declined to even start discussions on a new deal until after the season, which has put the coach in the difficult situation of trying to get through to a team that knows he may be a lame duck.

``Effort should be a given. We're all getting paid well,'' Woodson said. ``But we didn't have effort (Saturday) night for some reason. That's disappointing from a coaching standpoint because that's a reflection on me. I can't say that too many times since I've been here. Even when we went through the 13-win season, the guys gave effort.

``Now, all of a sudden, we've hit a wall in this series.''

That wall could lead to a major shake-up. The Hawks offered Johnson a contract extension before the season, but he turned it down to be part of perhaps the greatest free agent class in NBA history. The way he's performed in the playoffs, Atlanta might be reconsidering whether he's truly a franchise player who deserves a maximum deal. Johnson is averaging just 12.3 points on 29 percent shooting against the Magic.

Not surprisingly, Johnson was roundly booed by the Atlanta fans during a 3-of-15 performance in Game 3, which prompted him to say afterward that he ``couldn't care less if they showed up or not.'' Even after a night to sleep on it, he was still annoyed at the way he and his teammates were heckled by the home crowd.

``I don't think we've heard boos like that in the five years I've been here,'' Johnson said. ``If they come out and show support, that would be great.''

Maybe the Hawks have just run up against a superior opponent, a team that lost in last year's NBA finals and has been on a mission ever since to capture its first championship.

``We want to dominate,'' Vince Carter said. ``We want to take the life out of everybody we play against. We want to deliver the first blow and just keep delivering blows until we get the knockout.''

Magic thrive from outside, sweep away Hawks in four

ATLANTA (NBA.com exclusive) -- Don't ask the Orlando Magic about their conference semifinal series with the Atlanta Hawks.

It's over and they've moved on. Period.

"The playoffs are about winning and moving on," said Orlando head coach Stan Van Gundy. "You have to get off the last game and the last series and get your mind into the next series. We've been good at that."

It was pretty impressive, though.

The 98-84 win over the Atlanta Hawks at Philips Arena on Monday night gave the Magic their 14th in a row and a 31-5 record since the All-Star break.

And even if it won't help it in the next series, Orlando's domination over a very good Atlanta team was impressive. The Magic's average margin of victory was 25 points and they outscored the Hawks by a total of 101 points.

Vince Carter scored a game-high 22 points and Jameer Nelson added 16 and a playoff career-high nine assists for the Magic, who never trailed in either of the final two games in Atlanta and led overall in the series for the final 108 minutes of play. Their last deficit was 83-81 with 5.3 seconds remaining in the third quarter of Game 2, and lasted 5.2 seconds, the time it took Nelson to hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer.

On Monday night, Orlando took no chances, jumping on Atlanta early and never letting up.

"We just stayed on them," said Nelson, who scored 10 points and dished out five assists as the Magic shot 73.7 percent from the floor and carried a 34-23 lead out of the first 12 minutes. "When I'm out there rolling like I was today in the first quarter, my team feeds off of that. I'm just trying to be aggressive at all times and put the pressure on the other team's defense."

Atlanta actually shot 58.8 percent in the quarter, yet still found itself staring up at a double-digit deficit.

From there, the Magic's stout defense forced the Hawks into low 30 percent shooting over the next two quarters and below 40 for the rest of the game.

"They made shots and we missed a lot of shots in the series," said Hawks coach Mike Woodson. "We struggled to make shots, something I never thought our team would do because we've been so good offensively this year. "

Atlanta's misses allowed Orlando to make a crucial 11-2 run coming out of the locker room at halftime that turned a 53-45 race into a 64-47 runaway.

"We tried to deliver the blow early in each quarter and knock them out," said Carter, who scored six points in the run. "We knew they would be aggressive. We withstood their runs and actually made runs ourselves."

The Magic, whose 841 3-pointers during the regular season were more than any team in NBA history, made 16 3s in 37 attempts and outscored Atlanta 48-9 from behind the arc. For the series, Orlando shot nearly 40 percent from downtown, compared to below 30 for Atlanta and held a 132-45 edge.

Monday night, their 3-point shooting, led by Nelson, Rashard Lewis and Mickael Pietrus, who each had four 3-pointers, was more than enough to compensate for the series-low 13 points by Dwight Howard, who was 5-for-5 when he did shoot, including a monster slam over good friend and former AAU teammate Josh Smith.

"Three points is more than two," said Nelson with a laugh. "But let's not get it twisted. We're making 3s because Dwight is clogging up the paint. He's making them clog up the paint because he's dominating."

Jamal Crawford had 18 and Smith chipped in 16 for the Hawks, who won 53 games during the season, 34 of them at home, but for the second year in a row were left with the bitter taste of a season-ending, four-game sweep, losing the final two games at home.

"It was a great season, one of the best seasons in franchise history," said Crawford, who averaged a team-high 17.0 ppg against Orlando. "It was such an abrupt ending. I hope that fact doesn't get lost."

The Hawks are left with a lot of questions heading into the offseason, including the fates of Woodson, who is at the end of his contract, and Joe Johnson, a four-time All-Star and pending free agent, who was booed every time he touched the ball by fans at Philips Arena in response to some remarks he made after Game 3.

"I haven't thought about any of that," said Johnson, who scored 14 points Monday and whose 12.8 points per game in the series were more than eight points below his season average. "I wanted to make sure the guys keep their heads up. We didn't have a good series but the whole year was pretty good. You have to give Orlando a lot of credit. Defensively and offensively. They really made it tough for us this series."

Next on the agenda for the Magic is rest, and then preparing for the winner of the Cleveland Cavaliers-Boston Celtics series, currently knotted at two wins apiece. One thing they won't be doing is dwelling on the sweep of the Hawks and their second consecutive series sweep.

Van Gundy prefers to remember a different bit of history.

"Last year Cleveland won their first eight games and we beat them in the conference finals," Van Gundy said. "The one thing you have to understand about playoff basketball is you've got to get beyond the last game and the last series. It has no meaning for the game or the series coming up whatsoever. I think our guys understand that an understand every day is a new day."
