Spurs-Mavericks Preview

DALLAS (AP) The 12 guys on the San Antonio Spurs beyond Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker have a new identity.

Just call them ``the dogs.''

The nickname stems from something Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said following Game 1 of their first-round series against the Dallas Mavericks - and it certainly wasn't a compliment.

``I think we've got to have a few more people step up and play worth a damn,'' Popovich said following a 100-94 loss. ``I thought we had a lot of guys that played like dogs.''

Popovich might've been letting off some steam. Or maybe he was trying to motivate them. Regardless, how they respond is a major storyline going into Game 2 on Wednesday night in Dallas.

``They're pros,'' Popovich said Tuesday. ``I'm sure we'll be a lot sharper tomorrow.''

Matt Bonner, a backup big man in San Antonio's supporting cast, said he understands Popovich's message.

``Just come out and be sharper,'' Bonner said. ``Not necessarily playing harder physically, but being more mentally sharp and making less careless mistakes.''

Popovich was most irate about the turnovers (17) and fouls (28). Then there were all the small numbers in the box score.

Richard Jefferson scored just four points in 32 minutes. George Hill, Keith Bogans and Roger Mason were all scoreless in a combined 43 minutes. As a foursome, they made 1 of 9 shots.

``It's hard sometimes for them to produce a lot unless we put them in that position to score more,'' Ginobili said. ``So I don't think it was only their fault. I think it was our fault, too, for not finding them in the right positions.''

San Antonio's trio of stars had good reasons for not sharing more.

Ginobili started 8 of 10. Duncan was on his way to scoring 27 points, his most in two months. And Parker logged 34 minutes, his most in nearly two months, even though he's still getting over a broken bone in his right hand that sidelined him for one of those months.

``It was just one of those games,'' Parker said. ``Sometimes it's going to happen. ... I'll definitely try to do a better job to get everyone involved in the next game.''

Hill started at point guard in the opener, as he's done since Parker was hurt. It remains to be seen whether he keeps that job in Game 2.

Hill played less than 18 minutes in the opener, but lingering soreness in his right ankle might not have been all that kept him on the bench. He was pulled for good early in the second half, right after Jason Kidd stole one of his passes in the backcourt.

Popovich said Tuesday that Hill would be a game-time decision. If he sits, Parker wouldn't necessarily take his place. Rookie Garrett Temple could get the start because Popovich likes having Parker come in with his second unit.

Another likely change is how San Antonio handles Dirk Nowitzki.

Popovich gambled that he could get away with only one defender in the opener, then went through four guys before deciding to send help. By then, Nowitzki had most of his 36 points.

Dallas is expecting Popovich to use at least two and maybe three defenders on Nowitzki. So his supporting cast is on alert.

``If they're going to double-team him, it's up to us to penalize them for doing it,'' Kidd said. ``Hopefully we're up to the challenge.''

As well as the Mavericks played in Game 1 - they trailed for less than one of the final 40 minutes - coach Rick Carlisle has a list of things that must improve for Dallas to sweep its first two home games.

For instance, he doesn't want to see the Spurs turn seven offensive rebounds into 14 second-chance points, or shoot 50 percent from the field. The Mavericks also can't wait until the middle of the fourth quarter for Jason Terry, their second-leading scorer, to make his first basket, especially since they can't expect Nowitzki to go 12 of 14 again.

``We are going to have to play better,'' Carlisle said. ``We competed well during most parts of the game, but we had some breakdowns, some situations where we weren't engaged as we needed to be.''

Vets come up big as Spurs hold off Mavs, tie series at 1-1

DALLAS (NBA.com exclusive) -- Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker performed all their old tricks, Richard Jefferson broke out of the doghouse and the Spurs buried the Mavericks in their own back yard, evening their first-round series with a 102-88 win Wednesday in Game 2.

San Antonio never trailed as it bounced back from Sunday's playoff opener, a 100-94 loss in which "a lot of guys ... played like dogs," according to head coach Gregg Popovich.

The Spurs improved dramatically in almost every facet. They shot 53.3 percent (8-for-15) from 3-point range, outscored Dallas 23-9 in second-chance points, posted a 51-42 rebounding advantage and turned the ball over nine times -- down from 15 in Game 1.

Duncan delivered 25 points and 17 rebounds, Ginobili added 23 points and was 4-for-6 behind the arc and Parker finished with 16 points and eight assists. Jefferson, who had only one field goal and four points in the opener, scored 17 of his 19 in the first half.

"You could see it in his eyes that he was motivated," Parker said of Jefferson. "Nobody likes to play bad and he knew he didn't have a good first game. Knowing his mentality, we knew he was going to come back."

Game 3 is set for Friday in San Antonio.

Dallas played dead for most of the game, shooting just 36.5 percent for the game and trailing by as many as 20 points in the second half. Jason Terry led the Mavericks with 27 points off the bench. Dirk Nowitzki had a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds and Caron Butler scored 17, but the rest of the team managed a combined 20 points.

The Mavericks, who hadn't lost since April 3, missed their first six shots of the game and 12 of their first 13. They shot 27.3 percent (6-for-22) in the first quarter, with Nowitzki playing less than 3 minutes after picking up two quick fouls. Parker and Duncan scored eight points apiece in the period to give San Antonio a 24-20 lead.

"We blew three coverages on the first three plays of the game and those are mental mistakes," Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle said. "Dirk got two fouls and we were digging ourselves out of a hole from there going forward."

Nowitzki missed only two shots and had 36 points Sunday, but missed his first three field-goal attempts en route to a 9-for-24 night. He didn't get on the board until sinking two free throws at the 10:00 mark of the second quarter, extending his streak to 88 straight makes (74 in a row to end the regular season) before missing for the first time since March 29 midway through the second quarter. Nowitzki also had his streak of five straight 30-point playoff games snapped.

The Spurs were able to hold Nowitzki to 15 points through three quarters without resorting to double-teaming him for the most part.

"We're not going to trick him with anything, or give him anything he hasn't seen before," Popovich said. "We came at him a little bit in different situations. Sometimes we didn't, sometimes we did. But there's nothing we can do that he hasn't seen."

Dallas cut San Antonio's lead to one point three times in the second quarter, but never seized the lead. After the Mavericks pulled to within 36-35, the Spurs responded with a momentum-shifting 18-5 run led by Jefferson and Ginobili with nine points each. Jefferson sank his last five shots of the half and Ginobili made his last four, putting San Antonio on top 58-46 at the break.

"Richard was huge for us tonight," Popovich said. "He was in attack mode. He looked for his jumper, he drove it, he rebounded and he worked hard on D. He was really important."

San Antonio expanded its lead to 80-60, but back-to-back 3-pointers by Jason Kidd and Terry capped a 12-0 spurt in the last 3 minutes of the third quarter.

Another 3-pointer by Terry with 6:56 remaining in the game brought the crowd to life and got Dallas to within 89-84. The Mavericks came up empty on their next four possessions, with Duncan scoring eight straight points at the other end to wrap things up for San Antonio.

Dallas was nearly perfect at the free-throw line (19-for-20), but that was 14 fewer trips to the stripe than it made in Game 1. The Mavericks scored 10 points off turnovers, half as many as in the opener.

"We took care of the ball better and we didn't foul," Popovich said. "It helped us win a ballgame."
