DALLAS (NBA.com exclusive) -- So much for a sneak preview of the playoffs.
Whereas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle elected to play his marquee starters and wrap up the No. 2 seed in the West, wily Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich pulled a switcheroo, rolled out his B-list lineup and ultimately settled for the No. 7 seed.
Dallas (55-27) finished the regular season Wednesday night with a 96-89 victory against San Antonio (50-32), which played without stars Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili. The teams will meet again this weekend in the first round of the postseason, a rematch of last year's opening-round series won by the Mavericks in five games.
"I'm tired of those guys," Popovich joked about resting his veterans. "They haven't done a darn thing for us for quite a while, so I wanted to send them a message that we're a little bit angry at them. So hopefully they'll start playing better this weekend."
The Mavericks swept the last three meetings to take the regular-season series from the Spurs and enter the playoffs with some momentum, having won five straight and eight of their last 10.
Caron Butler led Dallas with 20 points, with Dirk Nowitzki adding 19 and Jason Kidd contributing 16 of his 18 in the first half. Sixth man Jason Terry scored 10 points and Brendan Haywood had 15 rebounds, five blocked shots and eight points.
"We took care of business and now we'll see Duncan and Ginobili for sure," Kidd said. "It's going to be a tight series."
Kidd and Terry fueled a 16-2 run that ended the first quarter and gave the Mavericks a comfortable cushion for most of the night, despite a monster game from Spurs rookie DeJuan Blair. He finished with 27 points and a career-high 23 rebounds for his second 20-20 effort of the season. He had 28 points and 21 boards at Oklahoma City on Jan. 13.
"I don't feel like I'm a rookie anymore," Blair said. "The rookie season is dead. I'm done now and it's time for the postseason. Whatever coach needs me to do, I'm going to do it."
The Spurs did gain some extra rest for Duncan and Ginobili, who were in the original lineup but replaced after warmups by Antonio McDyess and Roger Mason Jr. Neither even made an appearance on the bench in street clothes. San Antonio may have also gained a measure of confidence, considering it was able to close the gap in the fourth quarter while playing the likes of Ian Mahinmi, Keith Bogans and Garrett Temple alongside Tony Parker (16 points).
After trailing by as many as 14 points, the Spurs pulled within 87-81 on a free throw by Blair with 3:31 remaining. That prompted Carlisle to put Nowitzki back in the game. Nowitzki sank two free throws with 1:38 left to clinch the victory for the Southwest Division champs and extend his franchise-record streak to 74 consecutive made free throws.
Duncan and Ginobili should be fresh, but guard George Hill's status is murky. Playing in his second game since missing four contests with a sprained right ankle, Hill appeared to step on a cameraman on the baseline after a first-quarter layup and apparently re-aggravated the injury. He did not return.
Popovich defended his strategy of resting his two leading scorers.
"The real bottom line is that I'm paranoid about Tim being healthy and Manu being healthy for the playoffs," he said. "We've had playoffs where Timmy hasn't played, where Manu hasn't played, where Timmy has been half-speed, where Manu has been half-speed, for a variety of reasons. We're entering this playoff pretty healthy ... and I didn't want to screw that up. I thought that was more important to us than worrying about who we play."
The short-handed Spurs were just 2-for-22 from 3-point distance and shot 40.7 percent for the game. During their current win streak, the Mavericks' five opponents have averaged just 90.4 points on 43.2 percent shooting.
"Looking back at the last 10 days, there are some positive things that we have done," Carlisle said. "I like the team. We've had a chance to see what guys can do. It is going to be extremely competitive, but most of our guys have been in the playoffs before. It will be great basketball."
