Knicks-Raptors Preview

Even after a five-game skid and with Chris Bosh injured, the Toronto Raptors still have a chance to salvage their season.

The Raptors can secure a playoff spot with a win and some help as they host the New York Knicks on Wednesday night in their season finale.

Toronto (39-42) needs a win over New York (29-52) and a Chicago loss to Charlotte on Wednesday night to secure its third playoff berth in four seasons.

The Raptors trail the Bulls by one game, but hold the tiebreaker by virtue of winning the season series 2-1. Whichever teams ends up with the Eastern Conference's eighth seed will face league-leading Cleveland in the playoffs.

Without Bosh, Toronto probably wouldn't last long versus the Cavaliers. The power forward will miss his fifth straight game, and his status for the start for the postseason is uncertain after undergoing surgery on his broken nose last week.

The Raptors lost their first four games without Bosh and five in a row overall before beating Detroit 111-97 on Monday night. Toronto had a 1 1/2-game lead over Chicago before its skid.

The Raptors lost starting shooting guard Sonny Weems for the last few minutes after he appeared to hurt his right ankle. He is expected to be a game-time decision.

Weems averaged 19.0 points in three games before being held to six in his last contest. If he can't play, rookie DeMar DeRozan will likely get his 66th start.

DeRozan had 12 points Monday as the Raptors shot 60.0 percent (45 for 75) from the field and 3-point range (9 for 15). Toronto had a season-high 37 assists, getting 23 from point guards Jose Calderon and Jarrett Jack after they totaled seven in a 104-88 loss to the Bulls on Sunday night.

"We had a lot of guys trying to do too much and going 1-on-1, so we stressed the importance of trusting your teammates and sharing the ball," coach Jay Triano said.

New York had five players score in double figures as it snapped a three-game losing streak with a 114-103 win over Washington on Monday night.

David Lee had a game-high 26 points in what could have been his last game at Madison Square Garden as a Knick. New York, wrapping up its franchise-worst ninth straight losing season, could free up a total of $32 million in salary cap space if it renounces Lee's rights.

"I obviously bleed blue and orange and enjoy being here in New York, but there is a business side to this and that's going to take effect once the horn sounds ... in Toronto," he said.

Lee has averaged 25.7 points and 16.6 rebounds in three games against the Raptors this season. Toronto, though, has a chance to sweep the season series for the first time in franchise history.

Weems had 20 points and nine rebounds in the Raptors' 102-96 win over the Knicks on March 5.

Raptors take care of Knicks, but miss out on playoffs

TORONTO (NBA.com exclusive) -- Coming into their final game of the season and hoping to sneak into the playoffs, the Raptors wanted to take care of business on Wednesday night.

With a 131-113 victory over the Knicks, the Raptors handled things on their end. The only problem was that the Bulls did the same, winning in Charlotte to eliminate Toronto from the postseason.

"I had a good feeling coming into tonight," Raptors coach Jay Triano said. "We checked at halftime and you could see that Charlotte was playing restricted minutes for most of their guys. We kind of knew it wasn't going to get too much closer when they are resting some of their guys."

While they had an opportunity to control their own destiny when they faced the Bulls on Sunday night, they were unable to secure the win. Compare that with Monday's effort in a victory against the Pistons and then Wednesday against the Knicks and it's an example of how the season has gone.

"Reality hits you," said Raptors' DeMar DeRozan. "I came back here, seeing Chicago won, it just felt like reality hit you. It's tough, knowing I've gotta go all the way back home and watch other teams that we've beat before that's playing in the playoffs. It's going to be tough."

Without Chris Bosh and Antoine Wright, the Raptors had six players reach double figures, including three topping the 20-point threshold.

Bosh was in street clothes and on the bench for the first time since he suffered the nasal fracture in Cleveland a week ago.

In their season finale, the Raptors came out on fire. Shooting 70 percent in the first half, the Raptors led by as many as 15 before taking a nine-point advantage back to the locker room.

In the third quarter, DeRozan found his groove offensively, scoring 11 of his career-high 24 on 9-for-11 shooting. The Raptors allowed the Knicks to top 30 in three of the four quarters, but matched them shot for shot, and entered the fourth up 11.

"I am relieved to have the season over," the Knicks' David Lee said. "We have known for a little while that we are not going to make the playoffs. We tried to finish out the right way, but today was not our best effort, especially defensively."

If anyone needed evidence that the rest of the Knicks felt the same way, cue Eddie House, who was in uniform and active, yet spent a timeout flashing the championship ring that he won with the Celtics at Toronto fans.

Joining DeRozan in the 20-point club were Andrea Bargnani (24) and Amir Johnson (21). For the Knicks, Bill Walker scored a game-high 28, Danilo Gallinari added 22 and David Lee had 19 and 11 rebounds.

Having never made the playoffs in his career, Jarrett Jack was positive despite the disappointment.

"I enjoyed every minute of it," Jack said of the season. "I enjoyed playing with each and every one of these guys in this locker room. Next year when we come back, hopefully we won't be having this talk, we'll be talking about the postseason and playing in the first round."

Another thing that will take center stage in the offseason will be the free agency of Chris Bosh. Bosh did not speak after the game, but will address the Toronto media in the upcoming days There are likely to be lots of questions that won't have answers. Kind of like the Raptors campaign this season.
