The Oklahoma City Thunder franchise has waited five years for another postseason appearance, only to put itself in danger of a quick exit.

In their last game before starting a series against the Western Conference's best team, the Thunder look to end their struggles as they host the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night.

A playoff berth can do wonders for the confidence of a young team such as Oklahoma City (49-32). The franchise will make its first appearance since the 2004-05 season, when it was still based in Seattle.

"It's a great opportunity for us," coach Scott Brooks told the Thunder's official Web site. "It's a great opportunity for us to go out and compete. We feel that if we compete and leave everything out on the floor we have nothing to be ashamed of."

Oklahoma City's opportunity, though, may not last long. The Thunder are the eighth seed and will face the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers.

Oklahoma City had a chance to finish as high as sixth in the West, but it struggled over the past week, losing four of five. The Thunder return home after consecutive road defeats, 103-95 to Portland on Monday night and 120-117 to Golden State the previous evening.

"Of course we want to win every game, but that's impossible," said Thunder forward Kevin Durant, the league's leading scorer with 30.1 points per game. "But we want to finish this season off strong. We still have one game to play and we will take this opportunity to play our hardest. No one expected us to be here. We would have liked to be (seeded) higher. But we have to keep fighting and get ready for the playoffs."

Durant, averaging 37.2 points over his last six games, will need an outstanding series to give Oklahoma City any chance of upsetting Los Angeles. He'll also need plenty of help.

Thunder rookie James Harden appears to have ended his shooting slump. He's averaging 15.0 points and making 63.2 percent (12 for 19) over his last two games after scoring a total of four points and shooting 1 for 11 over his previous two.

Harden went 3 for 4 from 3-point range in an 86-84 loss to Memphis (40-41) on Jan. 22 in the teams' last matchup. Rudy Gay made a 20-footer with 1.3 seconds left for the Grizzlies.

Gay has again been a bright spot, averaging 19.5 points, but Memphis has missed the playoffs for the fourth straight year.

The Grizzlies, though, are much improved after finishing with a winning percentage below .300 each of the last three seasons. Memphis lost 123-101 to Denver on Monday night, falling below .500 for the first time since Dec. 30.

O.J. Mayo was held to 12 points and 4-for-13 shooting, playing 32 minutes despite suffering a left ankle sprain in a 120-101 loss to Philadelphia on Saturday night. Mayo shot 1 for 12 and had five points in Memphis' last contest with Oklahoma City.

The Thunder won their other matchup with the Grizzlies this season 102-94 on Dec. 11 behind 32 points and 10 rebounds from Durant.

Durant becomes youngest scoring champ in Thunder win

OKLAHOMA CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant made history Wednesday night inside the sold-out Ford Center.

Durant became the youngest player to lead the NBA in scoring as he equaled his season average, dropping 31 points on the Memphis Grizzlies (40-42) to lead Oklahoma City (50-32) to a 114-105 win.

"It feels good to be a part of history," he told a crowd of reporters around his locker. "Gonna be cool to go home and say I was the league scoring champ at 21. It feels better to get 50 wins though."

Durant finishes the regular season averaging 30.1 points per game, beating Cleveland's LeBron James who sat out the last few games and ended his regular season at 29.7 points per game.

"I love Kevin Durant," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said after the game. "I love what he's about, how he handles himself with such class. He has great respect for the game. He works very hard, always the first one to get to practice and the last one to leave and now all this is paying off for him. He's a special kid."

At just 21 years of age Durant beat the record for youngest ever scoring champ that had stood for decades. Max Zaslofsky of the old Chicago Stags was 22 when he led the league in scoring back in the 1947-48 season.

Durant's 31 points marked the 47th time this season he's topped 30, by far the most in the NBA.

Not only did OKC's young All-Star make history, the Thunder team did too. Oklahoma City's 50 wins is 27 better than last year's total of just 23, the seventh best turn-around in league history.

"I'm proud of a lot of people," Brooks said. "They've worked very hard to make this happen. Our general manager Sam Presti has done a great job building this team. There's so many good things that have taken place. 50 wins is great. We've had a good year, now we have a chance to make it really special."

That chance comes along this weekend when the Thunder open the playoffs in Los Angeles against the defending NBA-champion Lakers.

"We're ready for the weekend, we're excited about playing the best," said Brooks. "We understand what we need to do."

Mostly what the Thunder need to do is continue to work on their defense and holding on to leads.

A game that looked to be heading toward a Thunder blowout win turned into a nail-biter as OKC let a 27-point second-half lead (80-53) melt all the way down to just six points (97-91) by the the time the 3rd quarter was almost over.

"I have found five guys that wanted to compete," said Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins. "That's what I said at halftime. Give me five guys who want to compete. We gave up 71 points and that's 142 if they kept up that pace. I wasn't going to sit there and watch it."

A big first quarter from Durant got the Thunder off to a fast start. He led all scorers with 14 points in the first 12 minutes. KD also grabbed three rebounds, dished out three assists, stole a pass and blocked a shot.

Both teams filled up the baskets, with Oklahoma City hitting 59.1% and Memphis 57.1% but the Thunder led 38-26 at the first break because of an advantage from beyond the arc (4-for-6 to 0-for-4) and OKC hit four more free throws than the Grizzlies.

That trend continued for the rest of the half as the Thunder built a 26-point lead and led 71-49 at the halftime break on 60.1% shooting. Durant led all scorers at that point with 20. Rudy Gay with 14 points was only Memphis player in double figures at the half.

Oklahoma City threatened to blow Memphis out of the gym as the second half began, going on a 7-1 run to start the third quarter and lead 80-53 after a Durant slam.

But the Grizzlies went on a run of their own (25-10) over the rest of the quarter to get to 90-78 going into the final period. A 13-7 spurt at the start of the fourth quarter cut the lead to six at 97-91 and the fans who'd been roaring were growing restless.

"We would have gotten beat by 40 tonight if we don't play like we did in the second half," Hollins said. "I found those five guys I was looking for and they played the whole second half."

Memphis forward Rudy Gay led his team with 25 points, and Zach Randolph came alive to score 21 and grab 11 rebounds. O.J. Mayo had 17.

Durant's 31 led all scorers, and he also pulled down seven rebounds, handed out four assists and blocked three shots.

Jeff Green added 16 while rookies Eric Maynor and Serge Ibaka contributed 15. Maynor added 10 assists and Ibaka blocked a season-high five shots.

"Maynor and Ibaka really stabilized the game for us," Brooks said. "Serge just keeps getting better and better and Eric really helped us. Both guys did a great job."

Memphis will now go home and start thinking about next season.

"We need a couple of more pieces," Randolph said, "and then we'll be right there. We won 40 games this year, we can easily win 50 next year."

Oklahoma City is already at that 50-win plateau. Now comes a new season. The playoffs.

"I'm looking forward to going out to L.A. and playing well," Durant said. "This is a new season for us. We've played well against them this year."

Durant dismissed any talk of a rivalry between himself and Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant.

"Naw man, this is Thunder versus Lakers, it's not me versus Kobe."

However it's marketed the upcoming series between the two promises to produce some great drama and a challenge the young Thunder will not back away from.

"The Lakers are the defending champs but I don't see our guys getting overwhelmed," Brooks said. "We're gonna play hard. We're gonna have to play well to have a chance to beat them but they're gonna have to play well to beat us."
