MINNEAPOLIS (NBA.com exclusive) -- Amid a season's worth of despair, the Pistons found one last reason to be heartened about their future on Wednesday, while the Timberwolves simply found one final failure to forget.
Minnesota blew a 16-point lead and collapsed down the stretch in Target Center, losing for the 29th time in its final 31 games to tie the 1991-92 Wolves (15-67) as the worst team in franchise history. The Pistons, on the other hand, took their 103-98 victory in the season finale as more evidence that the process of regenerating another title contender is well under way.
"We know we have a lot of work ahead of us, but the guys did a great job and I'm very proud," said Detroit coach John Kuester, whose first season at the Pistons' helm produced a 27-55 record, worst since 1993-94. "They very easily could have given up tonight, but they said, 'No, we're going to fight to the end.' "
They fought, but without most of their usual weapons. Tayshaun Prince led Detroit with 20 points, but he and Ben Wallace -- who said he will wait a few weeks before deciding whether to return next season -- were given the fourth quarter off. With Chris Wilcox, Rodney Stuckey and Richard Hamilton sidelined by injury and Ben Gordon away from the team for personal reasons, Kuester stuck with a lineup that included Chucky Atkins, Charlie Villanueva and three rookies for the entire fourth quarter.
And that makeshift lineup, playing against the Timberwolves' starting five for nearly the entire period, suddenly scored at will. Villanueva piled up 13 of his 16 points in the period, little-used rookie DaJuan Summers eight of his 12, and all-for-one Detroit registered an assist on eight of its nine baskets in the quarter.
"That group really got us going," Kuester said of the odd unit, which closed an 11-point gap entering the period in less than four minutes and outscored the Wolves 35-19 in the quarter. "I was very proud of DaJuan and [fellow rookie] Austin Daye, but I thought Chucky really did a great job of leading that group."
Daye, who averaged only 13 minutes this season after turning pro following two seasons at Gonzaga, went scoreless in the first half, missing both of his long jumpers and turning the ball over twice. But he rallied for a dozen points in the second half, including a key bank shot with four minutes to play, ending his season in an encouraging style.
"I was just thinking about how fast this year went by," said the twig-thin Daye, who vowed to put "10 pounds of muscle" on his 190-pound frame by next fall. "It dawned on me how much better I've got to get over the summer."
"Those guys showed what they can do," said Villanueva, whose first season after signing as a free agent with the Pistons has been mildly disappointing. "We have three terrific rookies [including starting forward Jonas Jerebko] who are going to be good players in this league. We've got the pieces to get back to the Finals, but we never got a chance to gel. We take this as a learning year, and we'll be much improved next season."
But while the Pistons believe a significant portion of their nucleus is already in place, the Wolves expect to replace as much as three-fourths of their roster by next fall.
"I let the players know that they are not responsible for the season, that myself and [basketball vice president] David Kahn were responsible because we didn't put them in an environment that was conducive to getting wins," Timberwolves coach Kurt Rambis said, referring to the franchise's strategy of eviscerating much of its roster of veterans in order to position itself for rebuilding this summer.
That strategy produced $20 million in salary cap space, three first-round draft choices this summer -- but one lousy season. Minnesota won twice after Feb. 6, and finished the season on a seven-game losing streak, including an awful finale despite Corey Brewer's career-high-tying 27 points. And Rambis found one last teaching moment, benching second-year forward Kevin Love in the fourth quarter for some half-hearted defense, despite Love's nine-point, 10-rebound night.
"Kevin got down on himself again, and I've been very clear with all the players this year -- I accept any player playing poorly as long as I see them playing hard," Rambis said. "There should not be an excuse why you aren't playing hard. We could have used him, too."
The Timberwolves could have used a lot more, all season long, but at least one more respectable quarter would have salvaged an iota of positivity.
"We played so well for three quarters, I thought we had an excellent chance to leave for the summer with a decent taste in our mouths," Rambis said.
Instead?
"It was just so typical of us," he shrugged.
