Raptors-Pistons Preview

The Toronto Raptors haven't been making things easy on themselves lately, and their playoff chances took major hit with a devastating loss last time out.

Mired in a five-game losing streak, the banged-up Raptors try to avoid being eliminated from postseason consideration Monday night when they visit a Detroit Pistons team that has already defeated two playoff-bound teams this past week.

Toronto (38-42) is coming off a 104-88 loss to Chicago on Sunday to drop one game behind the Bulls in the race for the Eastern Conference's final playoff spot.

The Raptors, who had a 1 1/2-game lead over Chicago before their skid, will be eliminated from the playoffs with a loss, coupled with a Bulls win. If Toronto beats the Pistons, Chicago needs to win its final two games - Tuesday against Boston and Wednesday at Charlotte - to make the playoffs.

The Bulls will miss the postseason, however, if they finish with the same record as the Raptors, who hold the tiebreaker.

"We have two more left, and they have two more. We have to win out," said Toronto's Sonny Weems. "We have to dig in. We still have a chance. If some players on the team are giving up, then they shouldn't be here.''

Making matters more difficult for the Raptors is that Chris Bosh is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season after surgery last week to repair broken bones in his face after taking an elbow from Cleveland's Antawn Jamison on Tuesday.

Toronto is 3-7 without its five-time All-Star forward this season.

The Raptors have won the first three meetings of the season against the Pistons, and Bosh has played a big part in those victories, averaging 20.7 points and 11.0 rebounds.

Hedo Turkoglu is averaging 13.7 points and 7.7 assists against the Pistons this season, but he's had a tough time stepping up in Bosh's absence.

Turkoglu, who injured his nose in Wednesday's 115-104 loss to Boston, is averaging 5.7 points on 31.8 percent shooting in his last three games. He grabbed a career-best 19 rebounds Sunday, but missed 10 of 12 shots and finished with six points.

Toronto, which has never swept a season series from Detroit, hasn't played the Pistons since a 102-95 home win on Dec. 27.

The Pistons (26-54) have their most losses since going 28-54 in 1994-95, but they haven't given up.

After defeating third-place Atlanta 90-88 on Wednesday and sixth-place Miami 106-99 two days later to win its third in a row, Detroit nearly knocked off seventh-place Charlotte on Saturday. Playing without Richard Hamilton (ankle) and Rodney Stuckey (rib), the Pistons led the Bobcats by one with just over a minute remaining, but missed their final four shots and lost 99-95.

"This is exactly what we were talking about, just going out and competing every night, respecting other teams in the playoff hunt and going out there and challenging them,'' said Ben Gordon, who finished with 21 points a night after scoring 39 against the Heat. "That's what we've been doing.''

A stronger defensive presence has spurred this turnaround.

The Pistons are allowing an average of 97.3 points in their last four games after yielding 107.1 points on 53.2 percent shooting during an 11-game losing streak.

Raptors end losing streak, keep pressure on Bulls

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (NBA.com exclusive) -- Jose Calderon does not have a helpless feeling regarding his team's playoff outlook.

After Toronto snapped its five-game losing streak by walloping Detroit 111-97 Monday night, Calderon put a positive spin on the Raptors' chances for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

"We control a bit of our destiny," he said. "We've got to win one and Chicago's got Boston and Charlotte. Those are no easy games. They've got the pressure now."

Despite Calderon's optimism, the Raptors have put themselves in a difficult spot. If Chicago wins its last two games, the Raptors will be left out in the cold. The Bulls (39-41) are a half-game ahead of the Raptors (39-42), who relinquished control of their fate with a 104-88 home loss to Chicago on Sunday night.

The Bulls host Boston on Tuesday, then play at Charlotte on Wednesday. The Raptors, who hold the tiebreaker, have one home game remaining against New York on Wednesday.

"They have to win two games and we've got to win one," Jarrett Jack said. "They better not have any slippage. If so, we'll be right there to pick up the pieces."

Pistons forward Charlie Villanueva gave the Raptors some extra incentive before the game, though Toronto's players seemed oblivious to his boast. Villanueva guaranteed a Detroit victory on his Twitter page.

"Guarantee win tonight, yeah I said it," Villanueva said in his post.

Villanueva had nothing to say afterward, bolting the locker room as the media filed in.

Jack acted surprised when informed of Villanueva's guarantee.

"I didn't get the memo at all," he said. "I hope he didn't send it to too many people. I hope he can retract that one."

Andrea Bargnani and Amir Johnson made sure Villanueva ate his words.

Bargnani pumped in 33 points, one shy of his career high. Johnson destroyed his former team with a career-best 26 points on 10-for-12 shooting.

That more than made up for the absence of Chris Bosh, who missed his fourth consecutive game after undergoing surgery for a displaced nasal fracture.

"I wasn't really concerned about a career high too much," said Johnson, who had never scored more than 20 points in his five-year career. "I was just concerned about the win. We've just got to pray on Boston now to beat Chicago."

Point guards Calderon and Jack did a far better job of getting the Raptors into their sets than the previous night. They combined for 23 of Toronto's 37 assists, compared to seven against the Bulls.

"[Sunday] night, everybody tried to take it upon themselves to try to get us going," Toronto coach Jay Triano said. "We did a lot of one-on-one play and forced it. We talked about that today. We said share the basketball and trust your teammates and I thought we did.

"Funny, it becomes contagious."

Bargnani's second-quarter flurry seemed to get everyone going. He nearly outscored the Pistons in the quarter with 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting. Toronto wound up shooting 60 percent (45-for-75).

"Their guards do a great job of moving the basketball," Tayshaun Prince said. "They play four out and one in. Amir Johnson is pretty much their inside guy, who sets screens and just rolls hard to the rim. They pretty much did what they wanted down there and had us on our toes in the defensive end."

Jonas Jerebko got into early foul trouble guarding Bargnani. The Pistons then tried centers Ben Wallace and Jason Maxiell, who weren't mobile enough to handle the 7-footer on the perimeter.

"We tried to go inside to Andrea as much as we could," Triano said.

"He had a little bit of a mismatch and then they switched. When they put a bigger guy on him, he took them outside and he had a great night."

The only down note for the Raptors was an injury to starting guard Sonny Weems, who turned his right ankle during the fourth quarter. His status for Wednesday's game is questionable.

Ben Gordon led the Pistons, who lost their second straight after three consecutive wins, with 24 points. Villanueva added 16 off the bench but Detroit trailed by double digits throughout the second half.

"They really shot the ball truly well," Pistons coach John Kuester said. "I know our defense wasn't all that great but I give them a lot of credit."
