Thunder-Trail Blazers Preview

The Oklahoma City Thunder franchise hasn't won 50 games in five seasons. But at this point, that is a secondary concern for the Thunder.

After falling into eighth place in the Western Conference, the Thunder look to even the season series with the surging Portland Trail Blazers, who could be without leading scorer Brandon Roy.

Trying for the franchise's first 50-win season since the Seattle SuperSonics went 52-30 in 2004-05 and maintaining a one-game lead for the sixth seed, Oklahoma City (49-31) fell 120-117 at lowly Golden State on Sunday despite leading by as many as 20 points in the first half.

"When you lose a game like this, especially in the Western Conference, it can drop you two to three spots,'' said Thunder coach Scott Brooks, whose team has lost three of four.

The loss dropped the Thunder into a tie with Portland (49-31) and San Antonio, but those teams hold the tiebreaker.

"When the playoff seeding takes shape I hope we don't look back at this game as the one that got away and affected us,'' Kevin Durant said after scoring 40 points with 10 rebounds Sunday. "We all know the Western Conference is tough and we need to make sure we take care of games like this. It's a tough loss for us.''

If the Spurs defeat Western Conference-worst Minnesota on Monday and Oklahoma City loses to the Trail Blazers, the Thunder will be locked into the eighth seed and open the postseason against the defending champion Lakers.

While a victory Monday could help Oklahoma City move away from that undesirable scenario, Portland helped itself avoid that matchup with a 91-88 win at the Lakers on Sunday.

LaMarcus Aldridge had 24 points and 11 rebounds, Marcus Camby scored 10 points with 17 boards and Martell Webster hit three free throws with 3.1 seconds left as the Trail Blazers, winners of 17 of 22, were victorious with Roy playing just 11 minutes due to a sore knee.

"We're hoping that it's not too serious,'' said coach Nate McMillan of Roy, who is scoring a team-high 21.5 points per game. "We decided to hold him (out of) the second half and get some X-rays, and we'll look at him again (Monday).''

With Roy sidelined with a hamstring injury, the host Trail Blazers lost 89-77 in the Thunder's last visit to the Rose Garden on Feb. 9.

Durant, the league's leading scorer with 30.1 points per game, had 33 with 11 rebounds in that matchup.

He averaged just 22.5 on 26.3 percent shooting in two home losses to Portland this season.

Oklahoma City will try to avoid its first three-game road losing streak since Dec. 14-22.

The Trail Blazers need one victory for back-to-back 50-win seasons for the first time since 1999-2001.

Without Roy, Camby leads inspired Blazers to win over OKC

PORTLAND (NBA.com exclusive) -- Nobody of right mind would suggest the Portland Trail Blazers are better off without Brandon Roy as they head into the playoffs.

But Monday night at the Rose Garden, the Blazers displayed why they won't be pushovers if their all-star guard is unable to go.

Hours after it was announced Roy would sit out the final two regular-season games ? and perhaps the postseason as well ? with a torn meniscus in his right knee, his teammates rose up to vanquish the Oklahoma City Thunder 103-95.

Marcus Camby, looking a decade younger than his 36 years, was a man possessed in leading Portland (50-31) to the key victory over Oklahoma City (49-32) in positioning for the Western Conference playoff race.

Camby collected a season-high 30 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, knocking down 12 of 16 shots as the Blazers ? a day after beating the Los Angeles Lakers at Staples Center ? assured themselves of no worse than seventh in the West, meaning they will avoid the defending-champion Lakers in the first round.

Roy said he will postpone surgery until after the season, electing to rest his knee until Friday or Saturday. Then he'll do what he can to be ready for a first-round playoff series.

The show goes on without him, of course. And as the final seconds ticked off Monday night, the sellout Rose Garden crowd of 20,691 rose to its feet and serenaded Camby ? who came to Portland in a midseason trade with the Los Angeles Clippers ? with "Mar-cus Cam-bee!"

"I've heard that before, in Denver," said Portland guard Andre Miller, a teammate of Camby's when they played for the Nuggets from 2003-07.

But Camby said it has been longer.

"Haven't heard anything like that since I was in the (Madison Square) Garden," said Camby, who played his home games there for New York from 1998-2002. "Felt good to be appreciated, but they should have been cheering the whole team.

"We weathered the storm without B-Roy. Being down by eight points at halftime and pulling out this game in a back-to-back situation shows a lot of character and heart by our whole team."

Oklahoma City led through most of the early going, and by as much as 12 points in the second quarter, as Kevin Durant lit up Portland for 21 first-half points. The Thunder were still in front 84-79 with 8 1/2 minutes to play when the Blazers went on the attack. Portland outscored the visitors 21-4 over the next six minutes to go in front 100-88, with the raucous Rose Garden crowd roaring its approval.

"This was a playoff atmosphere, a playoffs style of game," Oklahoma City coach Scotty Brooks said. "Physical. Every possession mattered. Every defensive possession was critical to the outcome of the game.

"This is one of the greatest buildings in the league. It is live, it is loud, they really get behind their team, and they should ? it's a good team to cheer for. It was an opportunity for us to play in an environment that will help the growth of our team in getting us ready for the playoffs."

Durant had 21 points as Oklahoma City held a 51-43 advantage at the break. The 6-10 forward was 5-for-7 from the field, 2-for-2 from 3-point range and 9-for-9 at the foul line.

The second half was tougher going. With Nicolas Batum and, later, Martell Webster into him on every step and double-team help arriving often, Durant was 1-for-8 shooting in the third quarter. He finished with 30 points but scored only nine of them in the second half, hitting 3-of-12 attempts from the field.

"I missed shots," Durant said. "It happens. I can't go perfect from the field. I had some looks I thought should have gone down but didn't."

Durant's looks, though, weren't of the open variety. At halftime, Portland coach Nate McMillan showed video of the first half to his players.

"I watched my mistakes," Batum said. "We didn't put pressure on him. The first five minutes (of the second half). I tried to send a message ? just go to him, be more aggressive."

"We weren't playing our roles at the defensive end of the floor in the first half," McMillan said. "In the second half, if there was an opportunity to switch out and deny, we did it. We wanted to body him and wear him down, and we wanted to double-team him in isolation on certain parts of the floor. And we kept him off the free throw line the second half. That was a key."

As the No. 8 seed in the West, Oklahoma City awaits a first-round date with the Lakers.

"Great opportunity for us," Brooks said. "We're playing against a lot ? the best team in the NBA, the defending champs, the best player (Kobe Bryant), one of the greatest coaches of all-time in all of sports (Phil Jackson). It's a great opportunity for our guys to go out there and compete."
