Rockets-Kings Preview

The Houston Rockets won't advance to the playoffs for the first time in four seasons, but they've been playing at a high level lately.

Playing their final road game, the Rockets look to clinch their fourth straight winning season Monday night when they face the Sacramento Kings.

Out of the playoffs for the first time since 2005-06, Houston (41-39) was on the verge of winning its fourth straight Sunday, but were outscored 14-0 by Phoenix in a late fourth-quarter run and fell 116-106. The Rockets' previous two wins were against playoff-bound Utah and Charlotte.

"You can just look at the West and see - that team is a quality team and they're not going to make the playoffs,'' Suns coach Alvin Gentry said of Houston. "They're a real quality team."

The Rockets, though, have lost two of three to Sacramento (25-55) this season, including a 109-100 defeat in their only visit to Arco Arena on Nov. 13.

Sacramento's Tyreke Evans, who scored 20 points in that matchup, is 24 shy of becoming just the fourth rookie in NBA history to average 20.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists. The others were Oscar Robertson, Michael Jordan and LeBron James.

Evans is averaging 14.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists in two games versus the Rockets. He missed a 113-106 loss in Houston on Nov. 21 with a sprained middle finger and sore ankle.

Despite the Kings losing nine of 10 to fall into the Pacific Division basement with Golden State, forward Carl Landry has been a bright spot for Sacramento. Acquired from Houston in February as part of a nine-player deal that sent Kevin Martin to the Rockets, Landry is averaging 18.3 points and 6.7 rebounds in 26 games with his new team.

Sacramento, though, has just two games remaining - and one at home - before Landry's year is over and a fourth straight season passes without the Kings in the playoffs.

"I never want the season to come to an end," Landry told the Kings' official Web site following Saturday's 126-108 loss to Dallas. "I wish that we could go to the playoffs like I did the last two years in Houston, but at the same time I can look at it as a positive. I have more time to become a better player for next year and help this ballclub get to where we need to go."

In his first game in Houston since the deal, Landry had 22 points and 10 boards in an 84-81 victory on March 3.

Martin scored 13 in that matchup, and is averaging 20.3 points on 42.2 percent shooting since the trade. According to Rockets coach Rick Adelman, Martin was limited to six minutes in the second half Sunday due to illness.

Rockets forward Luis Scola had 30 points with eight rebounds Sunday, and is averaging 20.3 points and 13.0 rebounds versus the Kings this season.

Houston's last losing season was 2005-06 when it finished 34-48.

Evans etches name in history books despite Kings loss

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (NBA.com exclusive) -- There's no reason to change the script in the final act.

All season long, Tyreke Evans has been the lone bright spot in an otherwise dim season for Sacramento. The theme didn't change in the team's final home game of the season.

In Sacramento's 117-107 loss to Houston on Monday night, the Kings rookie scored 24 points and became just the fourth player in NBA history to finish his rookie season with an average of 20 points, five rebounds and five assists.

"It was a special moment," said Evans, who also added six rebounds and four assists. "My first year in the NBA and I made history."

Evans joins LeBron James, Michael Jordan and Oscar Robertson as the only players to ever average the 20-5-5 stat line.

"Just to have my name with those guys who did it -- that's an elite three right there and to have my name added is just a blessing," Evans said.

"It means a lot, I never knew I'd come to the NBA and average 20-5-5," Evans said. "I watched the game growing up a lot. Watching Penny Hardaway and those guys. Now, actually being here and seeing what it's like, it's just a dream come true."

Already having clinched the mark in rebounds and assists, Evans needed just 24 points over the Kings' final two games to secure the mark. He had 22 of those points just before halftime, when suddenly he said the nerves crept in and he struggled to make the monumental basket.

"I have never been nervous before," Evans said. "There was a lot of pressure.

"The fans wanted me to get that bucket. They kept going to me; coach was drawing up plays. The other team knew what I was looking for so it was kind of tough."

Evans missed eight consecutive shots from the end of the second quarter until the 6:46 mark of the fourth quarter when he was fouled on a drive and scored on both free throws.

"It was probably the hardest basket I've had to get in my life," Evans said. "Any other time I get a layup or get to the line. But it wasn't falling, it was rolling right around [the rim]."

The moment even came with a curtain call, proving that Kings fans weren't as interested in a victory as much as they were seeing the city's young star reach the statistical benchmark.

"This game was a bit of a distraction for our players," Kings coach Paul Westphal said. "There wasn't much defense being played out there tonight. But I do think that the accomplishment of Tyreke -- even though it was a distraction to this individual game -- can't be diminished if you look at the totality of what he accomplished this season."

With the future of the Kings on display all night, it was the past that meant the difference.

Former Kings' scorer Kevin Martin scored 39 points on 11-for-20 shooting and by going 16-for-16 from the free throw line.

Martin was drafted by the Kings in 2004 and played 5½ seasons in Sacramento before being traded to Houston as part of a three-way deal on Feb. 18. The Sacramento crowd gave Martin a healthy ovation during pregame introductions and further cheers on his first basket.

Martin talked about returning to play in Sacramento before the game.

"I think the most disappointing thing for me is that I will never see my name up in the rafters as a King," Martin said. "I was on pace to do that. That was one of things I wanted to accomplish in the NBA. But things happen. There is also a bright side and the bright side is being down in Houston."

Martin, who averaged 24.6 points per game in his last full season with Sacramento in 2008-09, said one of the differences being in Houston was not having to be the main scorer each night.

"Coming here I learned to trust teammates again," Martin said. "In Sac, I was trying to do everything on my own until Tyreke got here -- I trusted Tyreke. And now, I'm down in Houston and I've got players around that I don't have to score 30 a night and I'm back to playing my efficient basketball and doing the things that I do best."

Houston led 103-101 with 4:57 remaining when Ariza scored Houston's next 10 points and the Rockets made a 10-2 to put the game out of reach in the final minutes. Ariza finished with 29 points and five rebounds.

Note: California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was introduced sitting courtside in the second quarter to a raucous blend of boos and cheers.
