Mavericks-Clippers Preview

With second place in the Western Conference close to being secured, the Dallas Mavericks aren't giving subpar teams much of a chance to play the role of spoiler.

The Mavericks look to take advantage of another such contest and hold on to their lead in a tight race as they visit the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday night.

Dallas (53-27) has a one-game edge as it battles three teams for the second seed in the conference. The Mavericks can finish no worse than fourth.

"Obviously we would love to be the No. 2 seed (behind the Lakers)," nine-time All-Star Dirk Nowitzki said. "We would like to have home-court advantage as long as we can. But you look at the bottom four teams, there are no easy matchups."

The Mavericks, who have clinched the Southwest Division title, conclude the season against potential first-round opponent San Antonio on Wednesday night. First, they'll try to win their sixth straight against the lowly Clippers (28-52).

Dallas had little trouble against another inferior team Saturday night, beating Sacramento 126-108.

The Mavs have won three straight by an average of 16.6 points, a stretch that included two teams that have been eliminated from playoff contention.

"Every one counts and we need them all," coach Rick Carlisle said. "Each game has a critical meaning for the playoffs. Our guys are focused on that."

Dallas has played well despite missing starting forward Shawn Marion for the last three games because of a strained oblique muscle. His status is uncertain.

Nowitzki has helped make up for Marion's absence, scoring 39 points versus the Kings after posting 40 in an 83-77 win over Portland on Friday night. He has made 68 straight free throws, breaking his franchise record of 60.

Nowitzki and Jason Kidd have been providing veteran leadership, helping Dallas avoid letdowns against opponents such as Sacramento. Kidd is coming off his 105th triple-double, recording 11 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds.

Kidd had 26 points in a 106-96 win over the Clippers on March 23 after being held to seven or fewer in his previous five games against them.

Kidd may not have to match up with Los Angeles point guard Baron Davis, who left early in the third quarter of a 107-104 victory over Golden State on Saturday night due to a sprained right wrist. His status is uncertain.

If Davis can't play, Bobby Brown is a candidate to replace him in the starting lineup.

Davis was having an outstanding game, finishing with 21 points. Chris Kaman had 27 points and 10 rebounds as Los Angeles snapped a seven-game slide.

"I hadn't realized we were on a seven-game losing streak, honestly," Kaman said. "I hadn't even thought about it. We're just trying to finish strong and think ahead a little bit to the summer. I just keep looking ahead."

Kaman has averaged 24.5 points in two games against the Mavs this season.

Mavs take care of Clippers as No. 2 seed hangs in air

LOS ANGELES (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Dallas Mavericks took a big step toward clinching the No. 2 seed for the NBA Western Conference playoffs.

As expected, the Los Angeles Clippers didn't prove to be much of an obstacle.

The Mavericks grabbed a double-digit lead in the first five minutes and stretched it from there Monday night, cruising to a 117-94 victory at Staples Center.

Dallas (54-27) now has the luxury of clinching the No. 2 seed in one of three ways, a loss by Utah against either host Golden State on Tuesday or visiting Phoenix on Wednesday, or by defeating the visiting Spurs on Wednesday.

"We came here tonight wanting and needing a win," said Dallas coach Rick Carlisle. "Our team wants that second spot in the playoffs."

Dallas didn't take any chances against the Clippers, who lost for the eighth time in the last nine games. The Mavericks started forward Shawn Marion, who had sat out the previous three games with a strained left oblique muscle.

Marion, who finished with 21 points in just over 26 minutes, went through an extensive workout prior to Saturday's victory at Sacramento, but the Mavericks opted to keep him out in preparation for the postseason.

"We did not risk anything tonight," Carlisle said. "It went smoothly, just like we went over in practice."

The Clippers played without starting backcourt Baron Davis and Eric Gordon and power forward Drew Gooden. Davis sprained his wrist in Saturday's victory against Golden State, Gordon missed his second consecutive game with a viral infection and Gooden was out with a sore knee.

Gooden's absence put second-year forward DeAndre Jordan in the unenviable position of guarding nine-time All-Star forward Dirk Nowitzki, who on Monday was named the Western Conference player of the week for the fourth time this season after averaging 33.7 points and 8.7 rebounds in three victories last week.

Nowitzki finished with 28 points and eight rebounds, sinking all four of his 3-point attempts.

"We rebounded well," Carlisle said. "Our offense was good and I'm happy with our results."

The Mavericks led by 11 points after the first quarter, 21 points at halftime and 30 at the end of three quarters, allowing Marion, Nowitzki and the rest of the Dallas starters to rest the final 12 minutes.

Jason Kidd played long enough to accumulate 12 points and 12 assists, while fellow guard Rodrigue Beaubois contributed 11 points.

The Mavericks finished with a league-best road record of 27-14, which can be matched if Boston and Cleveland win their regular-season finales.

The Clippers were led by Chris Kaman with 17 points and seven rebounds, but he matched his season-high with six turnovers.

Seldom-used shooting guard Steve Novak, who came in averaging 1.7 points, took advantage of extra playing time and posted season highs in points (15), 3-point baskets (three) and minutes (24).

Craig Smith also scored 15 points off the bench for the Clippers (28-53), who will finish shy of 30 victories for the 14th time since coming to Los Angeles prior to the 1984-85 season. Steve Blake added a season-high 13 assists to go along with nine points.

"When you take your bench and put them in the starting lineup, your bench is very weak," said Clippers coach Kim Hughes.
