INDIANAPOLIS (NBA.com exclusive) -- Maybe it was the opponent. Maybe it was because late in the season, the Indiana Pacers somewhat surprisingly have been very, very hot.
Whatever the reason, an early deficit bothered Indiana not a bit.
In fact, for a team 16 games under .500, the second-half comeback had an undeniable inevitability as Indiana -- after struggling early -- rallied from a 12-point first-half deficit to steadily pull away from the New Jersey Nets for a 115-102 victory Saturday night in front of 18,165 at Conseco Fieldhouse.
"We didn't play well defensively the entire game," said Pacers forward Troy Murphy, who scored 14 of his game-high 25 points in a third quarter in which Indiana outscored the Nets, 32-19.
"We hit our shots in the third quarter, and that was the difference."
The Pacers (32-48), a night after beating the team with the NBA's best record -- the Cleveland Cavaliers -- on the road, returned home on Saturday and in the second half, calmly eased past the team with the league's worst record. Indiana trailed, 51-39, with 7:06 remaining in the half, but led 84-74 with 3:20 remaining in the third quarter and the Nets (12-68) never threatened thereafter.
The Pacers cut the lead to four by halftime with a 17-9 run to end the half.
"I thought we started well," Nets coach Kiki Vandeweghe said. "I thought the game was lost a little bit at the end of the first half. The last two or three minutes, we didn't capitalize and we struggled from there. We wore out a little bit. We have to fight through that.
"We were a little selfish on offense and defense. The extra effort just wasn't there in the second half."
And this time, for a change, the Pacers' victory wasn't about Danny Granger.
At least, it wasn't just about Granger.
Rather, it was about what in recent weeks has been an increasingly balanced, consistent offense.
Granger, an All-Star swingman who entered the game having scored at least 25 points in 11 of 13 games and 30 or more seven times in 10 games, struggled in the first half, shooting 3 of 10 from the field for six points. He finished with 22 points, shooting 4 of 5 from the field in a 12-point fourth quarter.
Not only did Murphy shoot 10 of 18 -- 3 of 7 from 3-point range -- but second-year center Roy Hibbert scored 16 points, guard Brandon Rush scored 12 and forward Dhantay Jones came off the bench to score 18 points in 31:23.
"They put together runs when they needed to," Nets forward/center Josh Boone said. "We came out strong and were moving the ball and were playing solid defense. In the third quarter, we kind of let up defensively. They have a lot of talented players over there."
The Pacers, who have won 11 of 12 home games and nine of 11 games overall, have scored 110 points in four consecutive games, averaging 119.3 points per game in that span. It's their first four-game streak of 110 or more points this season.
"The chemistry is better for us now," Jones said. "People are helping each other and playing better together at this point of the season."
Mostly, the Pacers continued to spread the floor, coach Jim O'Brien said. When that happens, as has been the case for much of the last month, the Pacers get the open looks that helped them be one of the NBA's best shooting teams last season and has made them that again through the final weeks of 2009-2010.
"I like spacing the court," O'Brien said. "We've had a lot of success recently because we've become a real tough team to guard when we space the court."
The Pacers, who have shot better than 50 percent from the floor in three of four games, on Saturday made 9 of 24 3-pointers, and after starting the game 1-12 from the distance, they made eight of their last 12.
"They outplayed us in the first half, and we weren't nailing any shots from the three," O'Brien said. "Then, we caught fire from the three and defended better."
Said Murphy, "We are spacing the floor and hitting key shots much better now. That wasn't happening early in the year and resulted in some losses for us. We were able to knock down some key shots. It's guys knocking down shots. That has been a big difference.
"If you space the court and you don't hit shots, it really doesn't work."
