Pistons-Bobcats Preview

Charlotte didn't get any help from Detroit in its bid to move up in the Eastern Conference. Now, the Bobcats will try to take out their frustrations on the lottery-bound Pistons on Saturday night.

The Pistons (26-53) snapped Miami's nine-game winning streak Friday with a 106-99 victory. The Bobcats (42-37) missed a chance to cut their deficit over the sixth-place Heat, however, after they fell 97-90 to Houston later that night. Charlotte is two games behind Miami with three games left.

The Bobcats were without leading scorer Stephen Jackson (21.3 points per game), who sat out due to various injuries, and they faded after the break, scoring 16 points on 6-of-18 shooting in the third quarter. Gerald Wallace and Boris Diaw each finished with 18 points.

Still, Charlotte secured no worse than a seventh-place finish in the East as the Bulls lost in double-overtime to league-worst New Jersey and the Raptors fell to Atlanta.

That means the Bobcats will make their playoff debut by avoiding a first-round matchup with LeBron James-led Cleveland for now.

"It doesn't matter who you play,'' center Tyson Chandler said. "Once you get in, it's just an eight-team race. You're going to have to face the Cavs, regardless. If you're trying to get to the championship, you're going to have to face the Cavs."

While the offensive performance left much to be desired, Charlotte did get its defense back on track. The Bobcats had allowed 100 points in each of their last two games after opponents averaged 90.1 points and topped 100 once in the previous 17.

Charlotte will try for another solid defensive effort against Detroit. The teams have split their previous two meetings, and when they last met on Dec. 22, the Bobcats won 88-76 at home behind 29 points and 12 rebounds from Wallace.

Wallace, who is averaging 18.3 points, is trying to break out of his April slump in which his scoring has dipped to 14.6 points.

While the Pistons have one of the worst records in the East, they are looking to win four straight for the first time since a season-high five-game run from Dec. 4-12. They played Friday without Rodney Stuckey (ribs) and Richard Hamilton (ankle), but Ben Gordon scored 26 of his season-high 39 in the second half.

Gordon signed a $55 million, five-year contract last summer, but has struggled with injuries and failed to live up to expectations after he averaged 20.7 points last season with the Bulls. He's scoring 13.5 this season, but has at least 20 in three of Detroit's last five games.

"It is a joy just to watch him play," first-year coach John Kuester said after Gordon started Friday for the first time since Nov. 25.

Bobcats tough it out down stretch, end Pistons' win streak

CHARLOTTE (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Charlotte Bobcats got a taste of the intensity of a playoff game Saturday at Time Warner Cable Arena.

The Bobcats and Detroit Pistons fought tooth and nail for the final six minutes before Charlotte picked up a 99-95 win and secured at least seventh place in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

The game saw seven lead changes in the final five minutes of play before the Bobcats were able to hold off the Pistons.

DJ Augustin, who got the start for an ill Raymond Felton, hit a game-winning fadeaway jumper on the right wing with 1:11 to play which gave the Bobcats a one-point lead.

Detroit had multiple opportunities on its next possession as it picked up an offensive rebound and had the ball go out on Charlotte. However the Pistons saw all three of their shots miss on those possessions.

"I'm happy with the way we competed," Ben Gordon said. "We gave ourselves a chance at the end. We just weren't able to make shots when we needed them."

Gerald Wallace split a pair at the free-throw line while Larry Hughes sank a pair at the charity stripe with five seconds left to seal the victory.

"It was a good win," Wallace said. "It keeps our momentum going and our confidence up as we head to the playoffs. We really needed it."

With the Bobcats having already clinched their first playoff appearance in franchise history, coach Larry Brown was able to give rest to starters and also give the bench players chances to get game time and work on different combinations for the playoffs.

"It was a good win," Brown said. "We got to play a lot of people tonight. Playing in this environment like we did tonight is pretty neat."

Augustin and Hughes got most of the benefit from Felton being sidelined Saturday.

Augustin tallied 13 points and nine assists while committing just one turnover in the game while filling in at the point.

Hughes kept Charlotte in the game in the second half while the Pistons tried to rally. The newest Bobcats acquisition had a team-best 18 points and added five assists, four boards and two steals along the way.

"It's good for me," Hughes said. "I'm feeling pretty good overall. Overall it's been great and an easy transition. I'm still trying to learn how everyone plays and what we need to do to win games. It's been great getting into live action getting ready for the playoffs. It feels good to be back in the playoffs. Once you get there, you want to win. You want to make an impact and that's what we're here to do."

Brown also limited the minutes of Stephen Jackson, who has a sore hamstring as well as elbow and hand injuries.

"It felt good out there," Jackson said after sitting out Friday's loss in Houston. "I don't want to go into the playoffs without a rhythm. I got more time off than I expected. Those days off really helped me and my legs felt good tonight."

The Pistons saw their three-game winning streak come to an end, but showed impressive resiliency in the loss.

"There have been a number of games what we have played hard," Detroit coach John Kuester said. "It's good for the guys to know that they can compete against any team in the league. Our guys worked extremely hard, so I was proud of them."

Detroit was once again short handed Saturday with Rodney Stuckey (rib contusion), Richard Hamilton (right ankle sprain) and Chris Wilcox (left hamstring strain) all sitting the game out.
