Nuggets-Thunder Preview

In a logjam in the Western Conference standings, the Denver Nuggets could benefit from having their coach and top rebounder and defender available. On Wednesday in Oklahoma City, the Nuggets might also need a replacement for their acting head coach.

Just one-half game off the Northwest Division lead, Denver looks to keep pace in the standings as it takes on a Thunder team trying to do the same.

With coach George Karl expected to be out through the first round of the playoffs as he fights throat and neck cancer and Kenyon Martin possibly sidelined for the rest of the season with patellar tendinitis in his left knee, the Nuggets (50-27) might be without acting head coach Adrian Dantley, who missed Tuesday's practice with a kidney stone.

Nuggets assistant John Welch helped run practice and could take over for Dantley, who is 8-6 in Karl's absence.

"It's something that is just tough that we're going through, but those are the cards we've been dealt and we've just got to continue to play them,'' Chauncey Billups said. "We can't hang our heads and say, 'Man, what are we going to do now?''

The Nuggets could have asked themselves that Saturday, but they rallied from a 21-point first-half deficit and defeated the Los Angeles Clippers 98-90 for their second straight win after losing five of six.

"We won the game, but you don't like to start off the game playing like that," Dantley said after the team's largest comeback since battling from 25 down in a 113-106 victory at Indiana on Nov. 10, 2007. "That's not good basketball. We just can't continue to do that. Why spot a team that many points at the beginning of the game? Happy we won, but you just can't do that on a regular basis."

A slow start against an Oklahoma City team averaging 119.2 points on 50.4 percent shooting in the last five games might not be the best idea.

Tied with San Antonio for sixth in the West standings and just one game ahead of eighth-place Portland, the Thunder (48-29) return to the Ford Center following Tuesday's 140-139 overtime loss at Utah.

Trying to counter Deron Williams' go-ahead jumper with 1.1 seconds left and extend Oklahoma City's four-game winning streak, Kevin Durant argued with referees that he was fouled by C.J. Miles on his 3-point attempt before the buzzer. Durant made a career-high seven 3s and scored 45 before the miss.

"The referee didn't call a foul. You have to go with him. He had a better look than I had,'' said Thunder coach Scott Brooks. "Sometimes you get those. Sometimes you don't. We had a good opportunity to win the game. We didn't get a stop. That's the bottom line.''

Stopping Durant could be a problem for Denver. With consecutive 40-point games for the first time in his career, Durant has moved into the league lead in scoring with 29.9 per game. He had 30 points in a 101-84 victory over visiting Denver on Jan. 29.

Carmelo Anthony, the league's third-highest scorer at 28.4 per game, missed that game with a sprained left ankle, but he averaged 30.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in two home wins versus the Thunder this season.

Johan Petro scored a season-high 14 points Saturday and has been solid filling in for Martin, but the Nuggets could get a major boost in their front court if Chris Andersen returns after missing Saturday's victory with a sprained left ankle.

Nuggets fight back to steal victory away from Thunder

OKLAHOMA CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Oklahoma City Thunder thought they had blown open a skin tight game with the Denver Nuggets with a 19-3 run that put them ahead 86-74 and got a sellout crowd roaring in the fourth quarter.

But instead of cracking under the pressure the Nuggets went on a 12-3 run of their own and then stopped the Thunder from scoring a field goal over the game's final 9:01 to win 98-94.

"That was a huge win for us," said Nuggets interim coach Adrian Dantley, "Basically we just got some stops on the defensive end, came up with some steals and Chauncey [Billups] made some big plays."

Billups scored 15 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter on 4-for-5 shooting.

"It was just guts in this game," Billups said. "The key was when we tightened up the defense because offensively this wasn't one of our prettier games."

"Our defense was back tonight," said Thunder coach Scott Brooks. His team held Denver to just 40.2 percent shooting, but many of thoise misses came before the fourth quarter when Denver outscored Oklahoma City 25-14.

"We had opportunities to extend a lead in the fourth quarter but we couldn't do it," Brooks said. "Chauncey Billups made some timely 3s."

It was another critical Western Conference game for both teams and it might have been a case of too many games in too short a time for the young Thunder. Denver (51-27) came in well rested, having not played since a Saturday night win over the Clippers. Oklahoma City (48-30) though was playing its fourth game in five nights, the last of those, an overtime 140-139 heartbreaker in Utah, may have taken a toll on the team.

"We won't use that as an excuse," said Thunder coach Scott Brooks, "but yeah four games in five nights, that's tough. Every NBA team goes through those stretches. Our guys were excited to play. We just couldn't hit shots in the 4th quarter."

The Thunder missed 17 of the 20 shots they took in the last 12 minutes and were 0-for-8 on 3-pointers. For the entire game Oklahoma City was just 1-for-14 from long range. Even Kevin Durant, the NBA's leading scorer, fell short in the last quarter. He scored 33 points but just five of those came in the last 12 minutes, all from the free-throw line. He was 0-for-6 from every where else.

Billups said the Nuggets tried to keep Durant guessing with what type of defense was going to be thrown at him late in the game.

"We switched up some looks on him. Sometimes it was me trying to pressure him and get up on him and not let him get into that rhythm. Sometimes it was Afflalo and sometimes it was 'Melo. There were a lot of different guys guarding him."

"We came up short on a lot of our 3-point shots," Brooks admitted. "We didn't have our 3s tonight but we still stood toe-to-toe with them."

For most of the night it was a back and forth battle that featured 22 lead changes and 16 ties. The stars shined too. Durant's 33 points marks the 43rd time this season he has gone over 30 points in a game. He also pulled down 11 rebounds.

Denver's duo of Carmelo Anthony and Billups scored 55 between them with Billups leading the way with 31. Arron Afflalo dropped in 17 and J.R. Smith added 10.

The game was delayed several minutes toward the end of the third quarter when Anthony took a blow to the head on a drive to the basket. Play continued as Anthony lay sprawled on the Ford Center floor. After time was called doctors attended to Anthony, who left the game briefly but returned to play the rest of the game.

In addition to Durant's 33, Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook added 21 but none of those came in the fourth. He also had seven turnovers. Nick Collison contributed 12 and grabbed nine rebounds. Jeff Green added 11 points with 10 rebounds and five assists.

The Nuggets played without Kenyon Martin and Chris Andersen, who are continuing to recover from injuries. Interim coach Adrian Dantley, filling in for George Karl, is suffering from kidney stones.

The Nuggets and Thunder continue with critical Western Conference games this week. Denver hosts the Lakers on Thursday and Oklahoma City hosting Phoenix on Friday.
