TORONTO (NBA.com exclusive) -- He was Boston's go-to guy down the stretch, helping the Celtics pull away from the Raptors for a 115-104 victory, but Michael Finley had been a question mark before the game.
Early Wednesday afternoon, Doc Rivers said he received a phone call from the trainer saying Finley might be a scratch from the lineup.
"Strained his back in the room picking up luggage," Rivers said. "That's when you know you're old."
Jokes aside, it was Finley's veteran leadership that helped the Celtics deliver the final blows to an already bruised Raptors team that was without Chris Bosh. Finley scored 14 points off the bench, 11 of them in the final quarter in which he went 4-for-4 from the floor and hit all three of his 3-point attempts.
"He's a pro," Rivers said of Finley. "He's a pro's pro. Even when he had it going, he was making two extra passes for our other guys. It's tough to get him to take a tough shot. He's just so solid. He's such a great guy in the locker room."
While the Celtics coach was praising his veteran, the Raptors were suffering from the loss of their superstar. After Bosh went down against the Cavaliers when he collided with Antawn Jamison's elbow, the team learned today that he will miss at least a week as a result of undergoing successful surgery on a nasal fracture.
Hanging with the Celtics in the first quarter, the Raptors lost another starter when Tony Allen collided with Hedo Turkolgu, catching Turkoglu in the nose. Turkoglu left the game and did not return, heading to the hospital for a CT scan with the injury listed as nasal contusion.
With their shortened roster, the Raptors fought hard and led by two at the break thanks to a 3-pointer by Antoine Wright on their final possession in the half. Coming out in the second, though, the Celtics settled in offensively and slowly pulled away.
While Finley's 14 were the boost Boston needed in the fourth, the Celtics had balanced scoring in the victory. Rajon Rondo had 21 points to go with seven assists, Ray Allen had 18 points, Kevin Garnett had 19 and Paul Pierce added 20.
"I thought they played their asses off," Raptors coach Jay Triano said of his team. "I thought they played as hard as they could. I commended them for their effort after the game, they really battled. Did we play really well and make shots? No, but they didn't back down and they fought."
Despite a strong effort -- including a career-high 21 points from Sonny Weems -- Toronto simply didn't have enough to stick with an experienced veteran Celtics team that was still fuming from a loss to the New York Knicks the night before.
Trailing by six at the start of the fourth quarter, the Celtics found their groove as Finley and Ray Allen started to heat up and Boston stretched its lead to 13 before Toronto was able to get anything going.
While Jarrett Jack and DeMar DeRozan did their part, combining for 22 of the Raptors' 28 points in the quarter, the Raptors wouldn't get any closer than six points down the stretch. It didn't help that Toronto did not make a trip to the free throw line in the fourth. The Raptors made just three trips to the line in the second half, compared to 18 for the Celtics as Boston won its eighth straight game against Toronto.
"When it rains it pours, I guess," Antoine Wright said of the team's injuries. "We are dropping like flies right now. Reflecting on the game, we played really hard and put ourselves in a position to win. Michael Finley played great for them tonight."
Wright and Jack finished with 17 points apiece off the bench while Andrea Bargnani also scored 17, but struggled from the floor once again, hitting just 8-for-22 field goals and 1-for-7 3-point attempts.
Hitting dagger 3-pointers late and extinguishing the Air Canada Centre crowd when he hadn't been sure if he was going to be able to play, Finley took some ribbing about being a veteran, but made the reason why he's still suiting up in uniform night after night crystal clear.
"It's not about hitting the shot," Finley said. "It's about just playing the game I truly love. As long as the desire to play and to work out and to do all of the little things to become a good basketball player, as long as that desire is there, I will continue to play. When that goes away, then that's when I have to walk away, but right now, it's still in me."
