Celtics-Knicks Preview

The Boston Celtics have been nearly unbeatable in Atlantic Division road games since Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen joined the team two years ago.

The Celtics will try to continue that success Tuesday night when they start a two-game division trip against the New York Knicks.

Boston (48-28) is 21-1 in road games against division foes since Garnett and Allen came on board for the 2007-08 season, with the lone defeat a 100-88 loss to New York (27-49) on Jan. 4, 2009. Since that contest, the Celtics have won 12 in a row on the road against Atlantic foes.

Boston, which is 3-0 against the Knicks and visit Toronto on Wednesday, is tuning up for the postseason and trails Atlanta by one game in the race for the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference.

The Celtics avoided a season-high fourth straight loss Sunday with a 117-113 victory over league-best Cleveland despite blowing a 22-point lead. Allen scored a season-high 33 points after being held to five and fouling out for the first time in a 119-114 overtime loss to Houston on Friday.

"I knew he was going to have a bounce-back game," forward Paul Pierce said. "You know the good thing about this game is that we stay together. Ray realized he didn't play well the last game or really didn't play at all."

Garnett had 19 points Sunday and Pierce and Rajon Rondo each added 16 for the Celtics.

"We needed this game," Garnett said. "I really felt like as of late, we had this three-game slide. It's not our character. That's definitely not sitting well with anybody in our locker room."

The spirited game featured six technical fouls, including one each for Rasheed Wallace and Rondo, who had 14 assists. The Celtics were glad to break the losing streak, but not with how they finished.

"We're happy with the win, but we're not happy with the way that we played in the fourth quarter," Pierce said. "If we're going to move forward in the rest of the season, if we're going to advance in the playoffs, then we've got to learn a lesson from this and stay aggressive."

Celtics coach Doc Rivers has altered his rotation to give Michael Finley and Tony Allen the bulk of the backcourt minutes off the bench instead of Nate Robinson and Marquis Daniels.

Robinson did not play Sunday for the first time in 22 games since Boston acquired him from New York on Feb. 18. It's unclear whether he will see action in his return to Madison Square Garden, where he was a fan favorite but repeatedly clashed with Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni and previous coach Larry Brown.

New York avoided going winless on a five-game road swing by defeating the Los Angeles Clippers 113-107 on Sunday.

"It was a hard-fought victory, and we needed it at the end of a long road trip," said forward Al Harrington, who scored 26 points.

David Lee averaged 24.6 points and 11.6 boards on the trip, and he's averaging 26.3 and 13.3 this season against Boston.

Knicks avoid season sweep with win over Celtics at MSG

NEW YORK (NBA.com exclusive) -- Danilo Gallinari didn't call his game-winning jumper off the window, but he'll take it nonetheless.

With the Knicks trailing the Celtics by one point and 36.8 seconds remaining, Gallinari drained a basket that caromed off the backboard and through the net for an apparent 3-pointer, triggering a roar of approval from the fans.

After a review by the officials, it was called a 2-point basket, giving the Knicks a one-point lead. David Lee added a lean-in layup with 7.3 seconds left and the Celtics failed to get a shot off on their last possession as the Knicks downed Boston, 104-101, before a Madison Square Garden crowd of 19,763 that included John McEnroe, Charles Oakley and Bernard King.

"When I shot it, I thought it was a little bit long but not that long, but I'll take it," said Gallinari, who poured in a career-high 31 points on 10-of-15 shooting as the Knicks (28-49) beat the Celtics (48-29) for the first time in four tries this season.

Gallinari scored 19 points in the third quarter when the Knicks outscored the Celtics 33-26 to go ahead 86-78, but he played just over four minutes in the fourth quarter, when Boston outscored New York, 23-8.

"The bank shot that Gallinari hit was the Basketball Gods punishing us for not having great focus," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "You can see their intensity. I just thought that we absolutely deserved that. I would have liked to win, but when you play with that kind of focus, you lose basketball games."

The Knicks rebounded from a 1-4 West Coast road swing and won despite dressing just nine players. Tracy McGrady (sore left knee) and Al Harrington (left ankle) were both injured.

After Gallinari's window shot, the Celtics called a timeout to set up a play but Chris Duhon (eight assists) intercepted a Paul Pierce pass underneath Boston's basket.

Duhon took the ball upcourt and fed Lee in the post for layup that extended the lead to 104-101.

After a 20-second timeout, Boston had one more chance to tie the game but Rajon Rondo held the ball too long on the wing before finally passing it to Rasheed Wallace on the top of the arc. Wallace fired up a meaningless 3-pointer but time had already expired.

Five Celtics scored in double-figures, led by Ray Allen's 17 points. Kevin Garnett and Kendrick Perkins added 14 apiece.

"They wanted it more than we did," said Celtics guard Nate Robinson, who was dealt by the Knicks at the trading deadline and finished with five points in his Garden return.

Robinson was dealt because he and Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni clashed. Now in Boston, Robinson sat out the Celtics last game against Cleveland Sunday.

Of his return, Robinson, the three-time NBA Slam Dunk contest winner said: "It's always good to play in the Garden...it's the Mecca. Unfortunately, we didn't get the win but we just have to look forward to our next game."

While Robinson is now part of the Knicks' past, 7-footer Earl Barron is very much a part of their present...and possibly their future.

Making his first NBA start in two years, Barron started at center, allowing Lee to slide to the power forward position, and delivered 17 points and a career-high 18 rebounds.

Lee added a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Sergio Rodriguez (14 points) and Toney Douglas (10 points, four assists) both played well off the bench for the Knicks.

But it was Barron who was the newest sensation. After stints in Turkey, the Philippines and with four NBA D-League outfits, he went 8-of-13 from the field, flashing a nice 15-foot jumper.

He also grabbed eight offensive boards as the Knicks dominated, 15-5, on the offensive glass.

"I've been in the D-League this whole year," said Barron, who signed with the Knicks Friday and confessed he didn't even know the Celtics were on the schedule until a couple of days ago.

"I've been waiting for the opportunity, just trying to take advantage while I can. It's great. They are a tough team, one of the best teams in the league. Beating them undermanned, shorthanded, whatever you want to call it. We pulled it out, everybody stepped up, gave it their all and we got the win."

Barron instantly impressed head coach Mike D'Antoni and his teammates.

"It's great," D'Antoni said. "He gives us that length and athleticism we need inside. Obviously, he's making open jump shots and his rotations are good. He's a smart player and good guy. He just fills a lot of needs and he's playing extremely well. Hopefully, he can keep it going."
