Spurs-Lakers Preview

The San Antonio Spurs could clinch their spot in the postseason by the time Sunday ends. They could also get a good look at their potential first-round opponent.

The Spurs will try to lock up that berth against the host Los Angeles Lakers, who could be in line to wrap up the Western Conference's best record.

San Antonio needs a win over the Lakers or a Memphis loss to Orlando later in the evening to reach the playoffs for the 13th straight year. The Spurs (46-29) took a step toward that berth as Manu Ginobili scored a season-high 43 points in a 112-100 victory over the visiting Magic on Friday night.

"We couldn't beat anybody the first 40, 50 games of the good (teams)," Ginobili said. "I'm very glad we started doing it. It's better late than not doing it at all."

San Antonio has won 14 of 19 despite not having starting point guard Tony Parker in the lineup for the past 15 games due to a broken ring finger. Ginobili has led San Antonio to 10 wins in Parker's absence, including three over division-leading clubs.

In his last 14 starts, Ginobili has averaged 25.1 points - nearly nine above his season mark - on 51.7 percent shooting.

He scored a team-leading 24 points against the Lakers on March 24, but George Hill was the only other player in double figures with 21 in a 92-83 home loss, the Spurs' fourth in the past five meetings with Los Angeles.

San Antonio has also dropped four in a row at Staples Center, including a 101-89 defeat Feb. 8. Ginobili scored a team-best 21 points in that win while Pau Gasol matched his output for the Lakers, who were without Kobe Bryant due to a sore left ankle.

That losing streak might not end Sunday as the Lakers are riding a seven-game home win streak that includes Friday night's 106-92 victory over Utah.

In its first game at Staples Center since March 21, Los Angeles (55-21) got a season-high 26 points from Lamar Odom, 25 from Bryant - who signed a three-year contract extension earlier in the day - despite a 5-of-23 shooting performance and a near triple-double from Gasol.

The Lakers are closing in on a third straight Pacific Division title as well as the top seed in the West. They need wins in five of their final six games to have back-to-back 60-win seasons for the first time since they did it four straight seasons from 1984-85 to 1987-88.

"The focus is to win and try to close up that spot so we don't have to put pressure on ourselves at the end of the season," Odom said.

The Lakers could have a little more depth for Sunday's game with the expected return of Luke Walton. The reserve forward hasn't played since Feb. 10 because of a pinched nerve in his back.

Spurs clinch playoff berth with win over Lakers in LA

LOS ANGELES (NBA.com exclusive) -- Before the game Spurs coach Gregg Popovich joked about hiding from the Lakers come playoff time.

If Sunday's showing at Staples Center was any indication, the Spurs won't be too far out of the defending champs' sight.

Behind the one-two punch of Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan, the Spurs went on to throttle the Lakers, 100-81.

"Unbelievable victory," said Ginobili, who finished with 32 points on 10-for-22 shooting. "I would say like two months ago it wasn't even in our wildest dreams to win a game by (19) against the Lakers."

The two teams have now split the regular season meetings, 2-2, with the Spurs having won by 20 points on Jan. 12 in San Antonio and now 19.

Minus a blip against the hapless Nets, San Antonio (47-29) has put together an impressive nine-day stretch with noteworthy victories against Cleveland, Boston, Orlando and now Los Angeles.

"We're playing our best basketball," Popovich said.

As for the Lakers (55-22), the up-and-down second half of the season continues.

After easily dispatching a formidable Jazz team Friday, the Lakers took a step back. Sunday's loss was just their sixth home defeat to 33 wins and their 10th double-digit loss this season.

"We want to end these last five games on a good note," said Pau Gasol, who had a season-high 32 points on 13-for-20 shooting. "We have to feel good about ourselves going into the playoffs. That's important, so obviously we want consistency."

Kobe Bryant had another woeful outing offensively.

After going 5-for-23 the game before, Bryant went 8-for-24 for 22 points. At one point, he missed eight straight.

"I just missed a lot of opportunities, and I can live with that," Bryant said. "I'm going to get those looks in the playoffs and I'll take my chances there."

Despite Bryant's struggles the Lakers, who trailed by as many as 15 in the first half, managed to crawl to within 71-69 at the 8:39 mark.

But that was the closest they would get.

The Spurs broke the game wide-open with a 16-3 run. Duncan, who finished with 24 points on 10-for-14 from the field and 11 rebounds, and Ginobili accounted for 14 of those points.

"He's taken over the team," said Popovich of Ginobili. "He kept us together.

"We just switched off between going to him and going to Timmy. They played together well."

The Argentinean hit a crucial 3-pointer at the top of key with his team only up 71-69. Later, off balance and crouching over, Ginobili dug the ball from his feet and flipped it in. Ginobili then sapped the life out of Staples Center with a rainmaker from the right wing for an 87-72 lead with 5:10 to go.

"I'm playing with a ton of confidence," said Ginobili, who in the last eight games is averaging 29.2 points and shooting 53.9 percent. "(I have that) that I'm going to make a big shot."

The Spurs, who shot 48.7 percent to the Lakers' 40.7, did their damage in the second and fourth quarters, outscoring the Lakers 59-38.

The only bad news to come out of this game for San Antonio was the loss of starting point guard George Hill. With three minutes left in the second quarter, Hill sprained his right ankle after stepping on Derek Fisher's right foot. Hill did not return.

A team spokesperson said X-rays were negative, but Popovich said Hill could not put any weight on his ankle after the game.

If Hill were to miss any games it may come at the most inopportune time especially with Tony Parker, who at the earliest will be back two games before the end of the regular season, still out with a broken right hand.

"A little worried about everything that's coming up now without George," Popovich said. "It's going to be difficult to sustain that and have Manu play point in all these games coming up."

This game had its fair share of physicality, especially in the final minute of the second quarter.

Ron Artest and Ginobili drew offsetting technicals after getting tangled up before the ball was inbounded. A second later, Artest fouled Ginobili. During that dead ball situation, Bryant was whistled for his own technical foul.

Ginobili pinpointed that moment as a turning point for him.

"(Artest) wanted to get into me and get under my skin," he said. "It makes you feel kind of good that they are trying to get you off your game and try to mess with you."

The Spurs, who sit in the seventh slot, are jostling for playoff seeding with six games remaining, but Sunday's win assured them a playoff berth for the 13th consecutive season.

"(The race for seeding) is the toughest it's ever been," said Popovich pregame.

NOTES: Lakers forward Luke Walton, who has been out since Feb. 10 with a pinched nerve in his back, played 7:56. He was held scoreless and had two assists.
