Raptors-76ers Preview

A couple of lineup changes appear to have helped the Toronto Raptors stay in position to make the playoffs.

The Raptors look to win three in a row for the first time in nearly two months as they visit the lowly Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday.

A 4-13 slump that stretched into late March has made Toronto's bid to return to the playoffs more difficult than it could have been. But the Raptors (37-37) have since won two straight, gaining some momentum as they try to hold off Chicago for the eighth playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Toronto has a chance to win three straight for the first time since Feb. 3-10. Two days after winning 103-101 at Charlotte, the Raptors beat the Los Angeles Clippers 114-92 on Wednesday night behind steady performances from their two newest starters.

Sonny Weems, in his fourth game since replacing rookie DeMar DeRozan at guard, shot 8 for 8 and had 17 points while adding five rebounds and four assists. Weems, in his second season, is shooting 70.4 percent since moving into a starting role.

"I think Sonny was a guy earlier this year who was maybe going to be a role player on this team," coach Jay Triano said. "But the kid comes back every night and works on his jump shot with DeMar. He works hard every day in practice and gives us something we don't have."

After appearing in 12 games as a rookie with Denver last season, Weems isn't taking the added responsibility for granted.

"You never get used to that because you can be pulled out pretty fast," said Weems, acquired in an offseason trade with Milwaukee after the Nuggets dealt him. "I'm just glad that I'm getting the opportunity to play and show my talent."

Forward Antoine Wright also has started four straight games in place of Hedo Turkoglu. Wright is averaging 6.2 points, but had 11 in his last contest and has posted double figures in five of seven.

Turkoglu, a disappointment after being acquired in a trade with Orlando in July, has come off the bench the last two games after missing two. He was a healthy scratch Sunday against Miami following reports he was seen out on the town hours after missing Friday's loss to Denver with a stomach virus.

Philadelphia (26-49) has had to make some rotation changes of its own, but it has been out of necessity. The Sixers dressed nine players - one more than the required minimum - in a 103-84 loss to Charlotte on Wednesday night.

Rodney Carney sat out after injuring a toe in a 111-93 loss to Oklahoma City on Tuesday night. Thaddeus Young (thumb) has missed eight straight games and Louis Williams (back) has been out five in a row.

All three players are listed as day to day.

"You don't feel like you're short-handed when guys are competing," coach Eddie Jordan said.

Jordan also has had to limit leading scorer Andre Iguodala's minutes due to a lingering right foot injury. Iguodala, averaging 17.1 points, is trying to play in all 82 games for the fifth time in six seasons.

Iguodala is shooting 70.6 percent over his last three games, but he's averaging 13.7 points on 37.1 percent shooting in three contests against the Raptors this season.

Raptors get by Sixers despite giving up double-digit lead

PHILADELPHIA (NBA.com exclusive) -- Chris Bosh had warned just one day earlier that Toronto's game at Philadelphia had all the makings of a trap game for the playoff hopefuls.

The six-year veteran out of Georgia Tech has been through enough in his NBA career to have a certain knowledge of what a 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon start can do to a team.

"It's tough," Bosh said. "It's tough. But we pulled through.

"We still got a little complacent. We came out and did the job at the end of halftime and in the first part of the third quarter but I think we got a little complacent. We let that energy get to us but we have to be able to ignore that and ride out own horse."

The Raptors beat the Sixers 128-123 in overtime at the Wachovia Center even after they blew a 17-point lead and found themselves in a struggle with a Sixers team prepared to play out the string. Bosh scored a team-high 28 points along with 12 rebounds as the Raptors (38-37) padded their cushion over Chicago to two games in the race for the final spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

The Sixers (26-50) used an unconventional smaller lineup to erase that 17-point deficit, but an ill-advised 3-pointer with 26.9 left in overtime by Andre Iguodala with the Sixers down 126-123 sealed their third consecutive loss. Iguodala led the Sixers with a game-high 33 points and 11 assists but it proved to be too little and too late for the home squad.

At the same time, the Raptors left the building with a sense of relief since this could have turned out much differently.

"It was a good win but we blew a lead late," Bosh said. "They went small and that always gives us trouble and we're going to have to learn from it. This was real important and I couldn't have imagined a scenario had we lost this game. We need all of them now."

In an act of certain desperation the Sixers went to a small lineup to pressure the Raptors the entire length of the floor. Granted, the Sixers had just one team rebound in the third quarter and for the first time in his 713 game career Sixers forward Elton Brand didn't get a single rebound but it worked.

"I don't know if I've seen that or not," admitted Sixers head coach Eddie Jordan said. "What stands out is our starting forwards didn't get a rebound and that's obvious. It came down to the end of the game, not necessarily the third quarter. It came down to us getting some key stops, some key misses and we didn't get a rebound."

In all the Raptors out-rebounded the Sixers 42-27, but both teams shot over 55 percent from the field on the afternoon, so that certainly limited the Sixers chances. Even then, the Sixers pushed the game into overtime as both teams heated up from beyond the 3-point arc as they traded off four consecutive 3-pointers that resulted in a 122-120 lead for the Raptors.

"We had such good momentum and then they went unconventional with a small lineup," Toronto head coach jay Triano said. "We got sloppy and they made their shots and they did their best with the momentum.

"I give them credit. There was an exchange of four 3-pointers and no one was going to let this game getaway. There are seven games left and we have to worry about winning each and every night."

Out of a timeout and down 126-123, Iguodala launched a 3-pointer from six feet beyond the arc that Raptor guard Sonny Weems pulled down and in all reality ended the game.

"I don't know what he was thinking," Raptors guard Antoine Wright said. "He did everything he cold tonight but I think he just rushed that shot."

"He had it going a little earlier in the game, but if that goes in there really is nothing you can do," Triano said. "I was surprised he took it. At that stage, you know, we debated this last week, can you get 2-for-1 [shots] at that point. 3-point shots are easily rebounded so it might not be that bad a play but I was surprised by the distance."
