Raptors-Heat Preview

As the Miami Heat look to improve their playoff position, the Toronto Raptors hope to simply hang on to their postseason spot.

Likely to be without injured center Jermaine O'Neal, the Heat try to match a season high with their fifth consecutive victory and hand the visiting Raptors a third straight loss Sunday.

Miami (39-34) is sixth in the Eastern Conference, but moved within a game of fifth-place Milwaukee after an 87-74 road win over the Bucks on Friday.

Dwyane Wade had 30 points with seven rebounds and seven assists as the Heat overcame the loss of O'Neal, who hyperextended his knee right knee in the first quarter. The team's third-leading scorer (13.8 points per game) who also averages 7.1 rebounds, O'Neal is being re-evaluated in Miami and could miss this contest against his former team.

"When we throw it down to J.O. in the post he kind of settles things a little bit,'' Wade said. "He's been playing well for us, especially of late. (But) we've played without him before.''

Miami still has Wade, averaging 27.8 points, 8.1 assists and shooting 49.2 percent during a stretch where the Heat have won 10 of 13.

"This time of the year, you can go out there and score 50 and your scoring average will only move up a tenth of a point; it don't matter right now,'' Wade said. "I'm just trying to be a complete player, do what I can to help the team win and get the highest seed possible.''

Miami could do that by evening the season series with Toronto (35-36), which is trying to hold off Chicago for the final playoff spot in the East. The Raptors, three games behind Miami, won both home meetings against the Heat this season, but had their three-game winning streak at Miami snapped with a 115-95 loss Dec. 15.

Wade had 35 points and 10 assists in the teams' latest meeting, a 111-103 Toronto win Jan. 27. He's averaging 33.2 points in his last five games against the Raptors.

Toronto All-Star Chris Bosh, averaging 27.0 points and 10.7 rebounds against Miami this season, had 18 with 12 boards in the Raptors' 97-96 home loss to Denver on Friday.

Two days after the Raptors were blown out 113-87 by Utah, Denver's Carmelo Anthony hit an 18-footer at the buzzer to hand Toronto its 12th loss in 16 games.

"We just have to put this behind us and move on to the next game," Bosh said.

This contest begins an important two-game trip for the Raptors, who visit seventh-place Charlotte on Monday. The Bobcats are 2 1/2 games ahead of the Raptors.

"It just goes to show we're gonna have to give (a strong) effort every night, from here until the season is over,'' Bosh said. "If we do that, I think we'll be in a better position for success later.''

The Raptors are 12-23 on the road, but have won two in a row away from home.

Haslem comes up big down stretch as Heat grab win

MIAMI (NBA.com exclusive) -- In a game that featured two high-profile power forwards, Michael Beasley, who was drafted No. 2 by the Heat last year, and Chris Bosh, Toronto's two-time All-Star -- few would have expected Miami's Udonis Haslem to be the best player at that position on the floor Sunday.

But that was the case in the Heat's 97-94 victory over Toronto at AmericanAirlines Arena, a game in which the Heat overcame an 11-point deficit in the final 6:23.

Haslem, the seventh-year player from Florida who will be an unrestricted free agent at season's end, came off the bench to score 23 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter on 5-for-5 shooting. This performance came one game after the rugged Haslem established a career-best with 18 rebounds in Friday's 87-74 victory at Milwaukee. As Haslem shared with teammate Dwyane Wade (game-high 32 points), there's a physical price to pay for such success.

"I told D-Wade I feel like a '72 Chevy with the carburetor shot, a couple of flat tires, and the engine light on," Haslem said. "Tomorrow is a good day to have off."

Miami (40-34), which is six games over .500 for the first time this season, matched its season-best five-game win streak with the victory. But just as importantly it stayed within a game of Milwaukee (40-32) for the No. 6 playoff seed in the Eastern Conference.

Toronto (35-37) has now lost three consecutive games, and 13 of 17 overall. Its lead over Chicago (35-38) for the eighth and final playoff spot in the East is down to a half-game. Sunday's game was the first of a pivotal back-to-back set that has the Raptors playing at seventh-seeded Charlotte on Monday.

Miami won this game largely because of the teamwork between Wade and Haslem, who have been together since their rookie seasons of 2002-03. Toronto opted to double-team Wade in the fourth quarter on the pick-on-roll plays, and Wade simply dished it to Haslem, who knocked down baseline jumpers.

"How many times have you guys seen that same play, the same situation?" asked Haslem, a starter on the 2006 championship team who lost his starting job to Beasley this season. "Me and Dwyane have been together for a long time and he has trust in me down the stretch that if I'm going to be open, I'm going to knock down the shot."

Miami was without center Jermaine O'Neal, who is day-to-day with a hyper extended right knee sustained in Friday's 87-74 victory at Milwaukee. Toronto was without forward Hedo Turkoglu (stomach flu) for the second consecutive game.

Raptors coach Jay Triano was a bit cryptic when asked why Turkoglu, who was in uniform, didn't play.

"He was active, but it was a coach's decision not to play him," Triano said.

Asked if that meant Turkoglu wasn't healthy, or Triano was trying to send a message to his team, Triano replied, "Both."

Asked what that message was, Triano said, "He's not healthy."

On the subject of Raptors forwards, Bosh has drawn lots of interest from Heat fans this season because he'll opt out of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent at season's end, joining Wade and Cleveland forward LeBron James, among others.

Although Bosh vowed early in the year not to discuss his impending free agency during the season he allowed a little mention of the topic before Sunday's game.

And much to the dismay of Heat fans, and possibly to the delight of Raptors fans, Bosh said his relationship with Wade might not be much of a recruiting tool after he decides to opt out of his contract at season's end.

"I know Dwyane a little bit, not a lot," he said. "Obviously, we got drafted together and we have the same agent (Chicago-based Henry Thomas), we came in together. We haven't spent that much time outside of USA Basketball."

Thomas also represents Haslem, and Heat fans hope Thomas' relationship with the Heat might have a role in Bosh's final decision. Many speculate Thomas might steer Bosh toward the Heat considering Wade and Haslem have been happy there.

"People always are going to look for some kind of connection," Bosh said. "That's understandable. It's going to happen. People are going to try to make things up because of the hype and all of that. But I'm just living it one day at a time. We can't do anything about the whole 2010 situation. There's always going to be speculation. So I'll just let everybody write their stories and keep going about my business."
