Trail Blazers-Thunder Preview

The Oklahoma City Thunder and Portland Trail Blazers are in the mix for two of the final playoff spots in the West.

Both, however, are playing like they're atop the conference.

The Thunder look to build on one of their most impressive victories of the season Sunday night when they host a surging Trail Blazers team seeking its 13th win in 16 games.

With just over two weeks left in the regular season, Oklahoma City (44-27) is sixth in the conference, one game up on Portland (44-29) and San Antonio. All three likely will make the playoffs, as ninth-place Memphis trails by 5 1/2 games.

The Thunder and Trail Blazers also each have a slim chance of winning the Northwest Division with first-place Denver three games ahead of Oklahoma City and four in front of Portland.

"We're trying to move up,'' Portland's Brandon Roy said. "We've got a chance to control our own destiny (Sunday), so we've got to go in there and play good basketball. And that's been our goal, to try to not look behind us but look at those teams ahead of us.''

While the Trail Blazers won the Northwest a year ago, the Thunder have been one of this season's biggest surprises after finishing 2008-09 with 59 losses, fourth-most in the league.

Oklahoma City is poised to make the playoffs for the first time since 2005 when the franchise was in Seattle, and the young team took arguably its biggest step forward Friday night against the West-leading Los Angeles Lakers.

The highly anticipated game against the defending champions was stunningly one-sided as the Thunder ran away with a 91-75 victory, their 12th in 14 games at the Ford Center.

"It feels good for us," said Kevin Durant, who finished with 26 points "It's another win for us and coming down the stretch, we need wins like this."

The Thunder snapped a 12-game losing streak against the Lakers, limiting Los Angeles to 47 points on 32.1 percent through three quarters en route to a 33-point lead.

"No matter who it was, it's a big victory for us,'' forward Jeff Green said. "We're trying to make a push, trying to get a good seed in the playoffs knowing teams are going to come in here and play us hard.''

Portland arrives in Oklahoma City after Saturday's 112-101 win over New Orleans. The game wasn't as close as the final score indicated - Portland led by 26 in the fourth before coach Nate McMillan emptied his bench.

Roy led the Blazers with one of the best shooting performances of his career, hitting 12 of 14 from the floor to finish with 28 points in 32 minutes. LaMarcus Aldridge also had a hot hand, scoring 24 points on 11 of 16 shooting for Portland, which shot 57.3 percent.

Despite Saturday's win, the Blazers' defense has been instrumental to the team's success, holding 14 of its last 18 opponents to fewer than 100 points.

They will face an Oklahoma City team that has reached triple digits in 10 of 15 games, winning nine such contests.

The Blazers did an excellent job of shutting down Durant in the first meeting of the season, an 83-74 win at Oklahoma City on Nov. 1. However, they couldn't slow down the dynamic scorer in an 89-77 home loss on Feb. 9.

Durant, who narrowly trails Cleveland's LeBron James in the scoring race, had 33 points and 11 rebounds in the victory, but had one of his worst offensive performances in the loss, finishing with 16 points on 3 of 20 shooting.

Blazers get past Durant, Thunder in Oklahoma City

OKLAHOMA CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant has helped lead his team to many wins, but he's never been able to hit a game-winning or game-tying shot at home in the final seconds.

He had another opportunity Sunday night inside a sold-out Ford Center, but a 3-pointer that would have sent the game against the Blazers to overtime rimmed out.

Andre Miller then hit two free throws to finish off a critical Western Conference win for Portland 92-87.

"It was a gut check for our guys," said Blazer coach Nate McMillan. "We have been talking about winning back-to-back games. Just a lot of things we threw out as challenges for our guys. The fact that Oklahoma City was right in front of us (in the standings), we had an opportunity to close the gap on them."

Portland is now an NBA best 14-3 in the second games of back-to-back sets. The Blazers were coming off a win in New Orleans on Saturday night.

"That was a well played game," said Thunder coach Scott Brooks. "Both teams fought hard. Our guys played with a lot of effort and energy. We just didn't make shots when we needed to."

Despite that miss at the end of the game, Durant still led all scorers with 29 points, adding 13 rebounds and two blocks as well.

"I like when Kevin plays with effort on both ends," Brooks said. "Our guys used every ounce of energy they had. We just missed some shots at the end."

"Credit Portland, they played phenomenal," said Thunder forward Jeff Green, who finished with 14 points and five rebounds. "We had a chance at the end. We put ourselves in a great position and some shots didn't fall and the shot at the end didn't fall. KD's a great shooter and he had a great look."

Portland guards Andre Miller and Brandon Roy dominated the game at times and ended up with a combined 46 points, Miller with 26 of those. And it was Miller who was defending Durant on the three ball at the end.

"We wanted to switch on all the pick and rolls," said Miller. "I didn't think he would pull up and shoot the three that far away but he did so that made it easier for me to get a hand up on his shot."

Durant missed four of his first five shots and was only 4-for-10 in the first half, as he was constantly pressured by the Portland defense. Blazer coach Nate McMillan switched defenders against the young Thunder star on almost every possession.

That trend continued in the second half as Portland switched up its defense on Durant repeatedly.

Both teams finished the game shooting 45.7 percent, but OKC outrebounded Portland 41-34 and grabbed more offensive rebounds(13-11). Despite that advantage on the boards, the critical late-game rebounds often fell into Portland's hands.

"We gave up way too many second chance points," Green said. "That's my fault I only had five rebounds. Portland played great but I had open shots I should have knocked down."

Blazers point guard Brandon Roy said before the game it was critical his team pick up the win because it would give them the tiebreaker over Oklahoma City if the two teams finish deadlocked in a tight Western Conference race.

His coach though told reporters this game, despite the standings ramifications, wasn't more important than any other.

"They're all big," McMillan said. "We have to be ready and focused for all games. If you make one game bigger than the others what would you do differently?"

Portland (45-29) is now in a virtual tie with Oklahoma City (44-28) for sixth place, though the Thunder are percentage points ahead.

"This is how games are played when they count in late March and early April," said Brooks. "We've put ourselves in a position to play meaningful games here at the end. After that debacle in Indiana (a 121-101 loss on March 21st) we came home and played well against four very tough teams."

Oklahoma City has now lost three of its last five, while Portland has won three in a row and eight of the last 10.

"Tonight felt like a playoff game with their crowd," said Blazers center Marcus Camby, who had 11 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. "They have a great fan base here. It definitely felt like a playoff game."
