EAST RUTHERFORD (NBA.com exclusive) -- For all of their on-the-court flaws, credit the Nets for being realists at this point of a difficult season.
They knew they had a beatable opponent in the Kings on Wednesday night and they're aware their opportunities to bypass the notorious distinction of having the worst record in NBA history are dwindling.
So there was much to glean from New Jersey's rather easy 93-79 victory over Sacramento at the IZOD Center. The Nets improved to 8-63 and now need just two wins over their next 11 games to avoid the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers low mark of 9-73.
In addition, behind Brook Lopez's 26 points and 13 rebounds, Devin Harris' 24 points and a defense that held Sacramento to 35.8 percent shooting, the Nets also showed some of heart for coach Kiki Vandeweghe, who lost his mother earlier in the day.
"It's like he tells us all the time - everybody deals with adversity," Harris said of Vandeweghe. "For him to come back after what he's going through shows the commitment he has to us. It wasn't one thing that had to be said. It was just kind of known we had to give that type of effort. We just wanted to come out and give that monster effort. We wanted it for him."
Vandeweghe was thrilled by his team's effort, and welled up from the emotion of the day.
"What I'd like to say is, 'Thanks, Mom - we got one," he said.
The win snaps the Nets' eight-game losing streak and franchise record-setting 14-game home losing streak. They have a chance to get win No. 9 against the Pistons here on Friday night.
"You can't get two in one night," Lopez said. "You have to look at the next one, a winnable game against Detroit."
For the third straight game, the Nets held their through halftime, leading 45-41. But unlike its recent losses to Miami and Toronto, New Jersey did not fade in the third quarter. It connected on 10 of 22 shots for the quarter - which is just about lights' out for this team - and opened up 68-56 lead late in the period.
The Nets saved their best for last. A 3-pointer from Keyon Dooling opened it to 75-61 with 8:35 left. The Kings never got closer than 10 from that point on. Jarvis Hayes put a bow on it with a 3-point bomb with 40 seconds left, making it 93-76.
"The way Coach talked about it, you've just got to want it and I think guys came out and focused on the task at hand," Harris added. "We picked up defensively. We rebounded the ball. We only gave them one shot at the basket and allowed our defense to turn into our offense. We turned turnovers into baskets and we got a lot of easy baskets in the third quarter."
The Nets were without rookie forward Terrence Williams due to a sore left foot and ankle, while Kings' rookie Tyreke Evans missed his third straight game with a concussion. Beno Udrih (19 points, eight rebounds) had a solid game for Sacramento. But Kings coach Paul Westphal deemed the loss "our worst game of the year in every way."
"It's hard for me to expound much deeper than that," he said. "We have never played this bad this year. I'm not going to dismiss this team because of one horrible game, but you have to call it a horrible game."
Sacramento is now 7-29 away from Arco Arena.
Vandeweghe's mother, Colleen Kay Hutchins, passed away on Wednesday morning in Newport Beach, Ca. Hutchins, who was named Miss America in 1952, had been ill for about six months. Vandeweghe missed Monday's game against the Heat to be with his mother and returned to New Jersey on Tuesday with a heavy heart.
"I was very lucky to go back when I did," Vandeweghe said. "I saw her on her last day or so. Really, it's tougher on my Dad. They've been together for 57 years. A long time. But there's always a sense of loss. I talked to my Dad about it and he said she would have wanted you to stay working. She knew you love what you do."
On a much lighter note, Nets CEO Brett Yormark was making the most out of the attention he received for barking at a fan wearing a bag over his head on Monday night.
As a measure of good will - and self-effacement - the Nets announced before the game that any fan who wore a paper bag over his head on Wednesday night would be asked to remove it. If he or she did, they were given a nylon Nets gift bag which included a note from Yormark reading: "Thanks for letting us see your face. We hope to see it more often."
Ultimately, two fans wore bags over their head and accepted the exchange.
In addition, Yormark will be meeting with the fan he jawed with - Chris Jisi of Middletown, N.J. - next week for what's being called "a brown bag" lunch.
