Pacers-Pistons Preview

The Indiana Pacers are all but assured of missing the playoffs for the fourth straight season, but they don't seem content to coast to the finish.

After an impressive home win over a postseason contender, the Pacers will try to snap a nine-game road losing streak by recording their first season sweep of the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday night.

Barring a spectacular run, Indiana (24-46) will likely finish with its worst winning percentage since going 28-54 in 1988-89, but it hasn't let another disappointing campaign affect their recent play.

The Pacers have won three of four and swept both games during a brief homestand over the weekend. After topping the Pistons 106-102 on Friday, they routed Oklahoma City 121-101 two nights later.

Danny Granger led Indiana with 32 points against the Thunder and helped hold star forward Kevin Durant to 16 points - a little more than half his season average.

"Teams come in here and kind of overlook us," forward Troy Murphy said. "They see our record and think it's going to be an easy 'W.' They probably figure that a team with our record would have packed it in by now."

Granger hasn't been any easier on the Pistons, averaging 28.9 points against them over the past two seasons.

Two days after the team said he would be out indefinitely with a cheek injury, Granger scored 29 points in Friday's win, and he had a team-best 25 in a 105-93 victory in the previous trip to the Palace on Jan. 22.

The Pacers are hoping a return there can help them avoid a season-high 10th straight loss away from home. Indiana dropped 10 in a row on the road last season Jan. 9-Feb. 18, but comes into Tuesday's game searching for a sixth straight victory over Detroit following eight consecutive defeats in the series, including five in a row in Auburn Hills.

While the Pacers are making strides to end their season positively, the Pistons are laboring down the stretch with five straight losses and a 2-12 record over the past four weeks.

They also suffered one of their most lopsided defeats of the season Sunday, falling 104-79 in Cleveland.

Jason Maxiell (16 points) and Charlie Villanueva (11) were the only players in double figures during the team's lowest scoring output in nearly two months. It also marked the fifth straight game the Pistons have allowed at least 104 points, and they've yielded 110.8 per game over that span.

"Every game is a challenge for us," coach John Kuester told the team's Web site. "That's the one thing we understand. Every opponent we play is a team we've got to be ready and locked in to play 48 minutes, regardless what their record is."

Even the return of Rodney Stuckey hasn't helped Kuester's club get back to winning. After missing six games following a collapse on the bench March 5 in Cleveland, Stuckey scored a team-best 25 points off the bench in Indiana but was held to four against the Cavaliers.

Granger leads Pacers to historic season sweep of Pistons

AUBURN HILLS (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Indiana Pacers have not accomplished much this season. Against one of their longtime rivals, the Pacers finally achieved something they had failed to do since joining the NBA in 1976.

The Pacers notched their first season series sweep over Detroit with a 98-83 victory at The Palace Tuesday night.

"Really? I didn't know that until now," Pacers point guard Earl Watson said of the four-game sweep. "It's not that surprising. There's been a lot of good teams for both organizations and a lot of talent on both teams."

With both teams fighting to avoid the Central Division cellar, this rivalry has cooled down in recent years. But the Pacers have heated up every time they've seen the Pistons uniforms this season. They have averaged 104 points on 49 percent shooting in those wins.

"Maybe it's our style of play," said Watson, who had a season-high 13 assists. "Sometimes there are teams that just have your number. We're kind of that team for them. Our style of play is unique."

Pistons coach John Kuester saw enough before the end of the third quarter. He was ejected for the first time this season with 1:02 remaining in the period. His frustration was understandable, considering his club has lost six straight. The latest loss officially eliminated the Pistons from the playoffs, ending a eight-year postseason run.

Indiana's drive-and-kick, fast-paced, 3-point oriented attack led to big games once again for Danny Granger and Brandon Rush. Granger poured in 32 points, solidifying his reputation as a Pistons killer.

He averaged 27.8 ppg in the series after averaging 30.8 ppg in four games against Detroit last season.

Rush found gaps along with wing and went 5-for-6 on 3-point attempts.

Rush made 15-of-21 3-point shots against the Pistons this season while averaging 17.5 ppg.

"I don't know why they always leave me open," he said.

Head coach Jim O'Brien, whose team snapped a nine-game losing streak, has seen steady growth from his young starting shooting guard.

"Brandon turned the corner a couple of months ago," he said. "He had a bad first five weeks but since then he's been terrific. He's been one of our most consistent performers. We're very pleased with the way he's developed as a second-year player."

O'Brien also liked the defensive effort as the Pistons endured another miserable shooting night. The Pistons shot 31-for-84 (36.9 percent) and scored 18 or fewer points in three of the four quarters.

"Field goal defense, we're doing a good job of that," he said. "We're not fouling as much as we normally do. I think over the past 11 games we're even on foul shooting. And I like the way we're spacing the court and finding each other. We had 24 assists and 12 made threes.

"They're all good signs."

Richard Hamilton's slump continued as he went 3-for-12 while scoring nine points. In the last three games, he's shot 4-for-23.

As their leading scorer shot blanks, the Pistons hung around until late in the third quarter. Indiana ended it on a 7-2 run to take a 77-66 lead.

Granger then scored the first five points of the fourth quarter on a pull-up jumper and a 3-pointer. The Pistons never got closer than eight the rest of the way.

By then, Kuester was safely tucked away in the locker room. Kuester, who had received just two technicals all season, blew up after an offensive foul call against Ben Gordon. He jumped out onto the court and screamed in the face of official Mark Lindsay. After Lindsay tossed him, Kuester had some parting words with official Mark Ayotte before leaving the court.

"I tell you this, I thought our team was fighting and I want to fight for them," he said. "That's the way I look at it. I look at that group and they were trying to battle. It's tough when things get called a different way and that's why it's frustrating. You look at the play and I said 'Come on, there's no need to make that call.'"

Tayshaun Prince's 14 points was good enough to lead Detroit, which is now two games behind Indiana in the standings.

"They're not used to the type of ball we play, I guess," Rush said.

"We shoot a lot of threes. You've got a lot of guys that can do that. Then you've got Roy (Hibbert) in the post. He's been playing pretty good against them. That's our whole gameplan."

Pistons point guard Will Bynum missed the second half with a back contusion. Ben Wallace sat out for the 10th time in 11 games with soreness in both knees.
