The Miami Heat didn't have a good offensive performance in their last game, but a strong defensive effort helped them pull out a victory.

That is exactly what happened in their two matchups with the New Jersey Nets this season.

The Heat look for their third win in as many games against the lowly Nets on Monday night at the Izod Center.

Facing a third straight loss, Miami (36-34) defeated Charlotte 77-71 on Saturday despite shooting 35.9 percent. The Heat got only 14 points from Dwyane Wade and were playing without the injured Jermaine O'Neal, but turned in one of their best defensive games of the season.

Miami held an opponent to fewer than 75 points for the fourth time this season, limiting the Bobcats to 29.2 percent from the field and recording a season-high 13 blocks.

"We were just active, covering ground, getting out on guys, bothering shooters," swingman Dorell Wright said. "That's how we're going to get wins. We just had to bring the energy from early on."

The Heat moved a half-game ahead of Charlotte for sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

Miami is in the top five in the NBA in scoring defense, yielding 94.9 points per game. That impressive average is the result of efforts such as the two performances against the Nets.

Miami won the first matchup 81-80 on Nov. 14 and took the second 87-84 on Feb. 17. The Heat shot 39.2 percent in those contests but limited New Jersey to 39.0.

Wade delivered a 3-pointer with 0.1 seconds left in the first victory, and the Heat overcame Wade's first-quarter departure due to a sprained calf in the second meeting.

Miami is expected to get help offensively and defensively Monday with the return of O'Neal, who is listed in the starting lineup on the Heat's official Web site. Averaging 13.6 points, 7.2 rebounds and a team-best 1.4 blocks, he sat out with a sprained left ankle Saturday.

O'Neal and Wade will try to prevent another close matchup with the Nets (7-62), losers of seven straight and three in a row by double digits. New Jersey fell 100-90 to Toronto on Saturday.

The Nets need three wins in the final 13 games to avoid tying the NBA record for losses, set by 9-73 Philadelphia in 1972-73. They could not come up with one of those victories against the Raptors, blowing a seven-point lead in the third quarter.

Point guard Devin Harris returned after missing two games with an upper respiratory infection and scored 22 points, while Yi Jianlian was back after sitting out six games with a sprained left ankle. He finished with nine points and five boards.

"The effort was definitely better, but we're still floating around that 42-minute mark, where we really need to get that effort for 48 minutes," said Harris, who scored 18 points in the most recent matchup with Miami.

Before scoring eight points in his injury-abbreviated performance Feb. 17, Wade averaged 30.0 points in the previous seven games against the Nets. The Heat have won five of the last six meetings.

Wade, Heat kick off road trip with win over Nets

EAST RUTHERFORD (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Nets weren't lacking for intent on Monday night, but they were again missing execution.

And so there was nothing close to consolation in New Jersey's 99-89 defeat to the Miami Heat the IZOD Center.

Maybe the Nets hadn't been so worthy of an 'E' for effort in awhile. But at the end of the game, it was still another "L" for loss under acting coach John Loyer.

"I feel bad for them," Loyer said. "But I told them they've got nothing to hang their heads about. They came against a playoff team and one of the elite players in the league, Dwyane Wade, and gave it everything they had."

Wade led Miami with 27 points, while Jermaine O'Neal, making a return to the starting lineup after missing one game with a sprained ankle, added 25 points. The Heat pick up a key win in the Eastern Conference playoff race in the first of a three-game road trip. They maintained a one-game lead over Toronto for sixth place in the East.

"We want to get in the playoffs and we have to go to battle every night," Wade said. "This week is very important for us."

"We knew it wasn't going to be an easy game," added Heat coach Erik Spoelstra. "You look at a team like the Nets and their record and you're very deceived by it."

The Nets, despite Brook Lopez's 26 points and Devin Harris' 16 points, have now lost eight straight overall and a franchise-worst 14 consecutive games at home on their path to the worst record in NBA history. Through 70 games, New Jersey still has only seven wins. It needs three more wins over the next 12 games to avoid the 1972-93 Philadelphia 76ers' notorious 9-72 mark.

"There was some extra energy, I think," said Lopez, who was atypically held to just one rebound. "But the third quarter really did it."

Loyer was at the helm because interim coach Kiki Vandeweghe was tending to his gravely ill mother in California. Loyer, who has served as an assistant coach with the Nets, 76ers and the Trail Blazers, was seeking more ball movement -- and he got it in the first half.

The Nets led 32-25 after one quarter, with Courtney Lee scoring 13 points of his 15 points in the frame. And when they went cold in the second quarter -- 5 of 19 shooting -- the Nets still managed to take a 53-52 lead into halftime, thanks to a 47-foot prayer from Terrence Williams that banked in at the buzzer.

But the Nets resorted to jumpers in the third and Miami began to pull away for good. Williams, who showed good energy for the Nets, had to leave the game after falling awkwardly on his left foot midway through the period. Then Wade completed a nasty alley-oop dunk off a feed from Carlos Arroyo, making it 74-65 with with 3:26 left in the period.

Miami led 79-67 to start the fourth. After the Nets cut their deficit to six late in the game, Wade again threw down the dagger with a pretty layup, making it 93-85 with 2:42 left. New Jersey failed to threaten from there.

"We had a solid first half, but in that third quarter, we didn't shoot the ball well and we didn't really guard," Harris said. "It was about a six-minute stretch we've known to have from time to time that really kind of dug us a hole we couldn't get out of."

The only good news for the Nets was X-rays on Williams' foot were negative. The rookie forward, who finished with nine points, eight rebounds and seven assists in just 23 minutes, was wearing a protective boot for what he called a sprained foot and ankle. Yet he was insistent he would be able to play Wednesday against Sacramento.

"I told them I don't even want to wear this boot," Williams said. "If it's up to me, today will be my only day wearing it."

Vandeweghe's situation is on hold, pending the prognosis of his mother.
