INDIANAPOLIS (exclusive to NBA.com) -- Overall record aside, a couple of things are true about the Indiana Pacers this season. One is when they shoot well, they're not bad.
Another is that lately, they're really good at home.
Playing at home Sunday, the Pacers shot well -- again -- and Oklahoma City superstar Kevin Durant for a change did not, with the combination producing a surprisingly easy 121-101 Pacers victory over a team almost certainly headed to the Western Conference playoffs.
"Regardless of the playoff situation, every game is a chance for us to improve," Pacers swingman Danny Granger said after what he said may have been Indiana's most complete victory in what often has been a disappointing season.
"We still have next year and the years after that, so I think everybody has taken the approach that we're going to try to get better."
The victory was the fifth in succession for the Pacers at Conseco Fieldhouse, while the Thunder (42-26) had won six of their previous seven games.
"We got our butts kicked," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "They played harder than us from the start and in all four quarters. If you don't respect your opponent, that will happen when you do that. We didn't play hard enough. To me, when that happens, you don't respect your opponent."
The Thunder's unhappiness was a theme in the locker room, too.
"Tonight how we came out was a disgrace to the game of basketball," Durant said. "That starts with me. I apologize to all of my teammates that I came out like that."
How Durant came out on Sunday was pretty much how the Thunder finished, and pretty much set the tone for the afternoon.
Durant, who entered the game averaging 29.7 points per game, shot 1 of 5 in the first quarter, and finished the game 4 of 16 from the field with 16 points.
"We played Durant well," O'Brien said.
The key to that, O'Brien said, was the defense of not only Granger, but forward Dahntay Jones, who played physical on Durant while only allowing him to get to the free-throw line seven times. O'Brien said the Pacers' interior defenders did a solid job helping on Durant without allowing him to draw fouls.
"They played great defense on Kevin," Brooks said. "They got into him and cut off his driving lanes. He had an off night and they did a great job."
The Pacers (24-46), who are now 17-16 at home this season, by contrast shot well from the start Sunday, and for a second consecutive game all five Pacers starters shot better than 50 percent from the floor.
"We just knocked down shots," said Pacers forward Troy Murphy, who shot 7 of 11 -- 4 of 7 from 3-point range -- for 22 points. "We were able to hold the lead today."
Granger, who has led Indiana in scoring each of his last four games, shot 11 of 21 for 32 points, and center Roy Hibbert shot 8 of 13 for 20 points. Guard Brandon Rush scored 15 on 6 of 10 shooting and point guard Earl Watson had 11 points (3 of 4) with eight assists and no turnovers.
"We did a lot of very, very good things," O'Brien said. "Our starters got us off to a very good start. It helps to make shots. We're playing solid right now."
With Durant ineffective, Indiana took control quickly and never let Oklahoma City gain momentum. The Pacers, who have moved the ball better offensively in the last eight games, shot 56.5 percent in the first quarter, after which they led 32-25. The Thunder never again got closer than five, with a 17-2 Indiana run early in the third quarter pushing the lead to 23, 78-55.
"Teams come in here thinking that they can overlook us, and we're just not going to let that happen," Murphy said. "We go out there thinking we can win and that attitude, you can win."
And while Granger talked afterward of savoring the spoiler role, the Thunder talked of the necessity to refocus for the postseason push.
"The best part about this league is we have a game tomorrow," Durant said, with Thunder guard Kevin Ollie adding, "You learn from it. We have to bounce back. We have that bounce-back power.
"We have to do some work, tighten up, and hopefully we can stay in this playoff race."
