INDIANAPOLIS (NBA.com exclusive) -- The home schedule is getting a bit more favorable for the Indiana Pacers. They're taking advantage of it, too.
It hardly hurt Friday to get good news on their leading scorer, either.
Danny Granger, who missed Wednesday's game a day after being elbowed in the cheek, not only returned on Friday, he turned in another in a stretch of recent big performances, scoring 29 points in a 106-102 victory over the Detroit Pistons in front of 13,583 at Conseco Fieldhouse.
It was the sort of game the Pacers expected to happen more this season.
But it's also the sort of game that has been happening more for the Pacers in recent weeks -- at least at home.
"We came out more aggressive tonight and were able to help each other out in a lot of situations," Pacers guard Brandon Rush said after Indiana shot 36 of 67 (53.7 percent) and 12 of 22 from 3-point range. "We hit a lot of 3s and got good returns on it."
To get those returns, the Pacers had to withstand a breathless Detroit rally.
After trailing by double digits throughout most of the final three quarters, and after trailing 94-80 with 5:53 remaining, a 15-0 run by the Pistons not only cut into the deficit, it gave them a brief, one-point lead.
"I thought our guys in the second half played the way we're supposed to," Pistons coach John Kuester said. "We defended and we played hard."
But after Detroit took a 95-94 lead on a 21-foot jump shot by DeJuan Summer with 2:51 remaining, Indiana scored the next eight points -- including a 3-for-3 trip to the foul line by Granger to push a one-point lead to four.
The victory was the fourth in succession at home for Indiana (23-46), which has lost 14 of its last 19 games. Those four victories were against Detroit (23-46), Charlotte (35-32), Chicago (31-36) and Philadelphia (24-44).
Pacers coach Jim O'Brien said the reason for the dramatic turnaround late in the game was simple. Ideally, he said when Indiana is playing well, its bench and depth is making a big contribution.
That didn't happen Friday.
"We didn't get the normal energy we get from our bench," O'Brien said.
O'Brien said at the end of the first half, each of the Pacers' reserves had a negative plus-minus ratio, and with Indiana's starters playing effectively, he said he stayed with the first team.
And he actually stayed with then longer than he would have liked.
Each of the Pacers' starters played at least 34:57, with center Roy Hibbert (15 points, six rebounds) playing a career-high 43 minutes, 10 seconds. O'Brien said that likely will be the most Hibbert -- a second-year veteran -- ever plays in a 48-minute game, and said the end result was a fatigued team in the fourth quarter.
"We had dead legs and we didn't play transition defense in the fourth quarter," O'Brien said, noting that the Pistons were 7 of 7 on fast break opportunities in the period.
But not only did Indiana make critical shots at critical times late, making 10 of 11 free throws after point guard Earl Watson's layup gave them a 96-95 lead with 2:04 remaining, they played efficiently enough offensively early to control the game's first 42 minutes.
Each Indiana starter shot 50 percent or better from the field. Not only did Granger shoot 11 of 16 -- 2 of 2 from 3-point range -- forward Troy Murphy (20 points) shot 7 of 14 and 4 of 7 from 3-point range and Hibbert shot 7 of 13.
Granger has led the Pacers in scoring in his last three games, scoring 29, 26 and 29 points in that span.
"We moved the ball, got open and got good stops," Watson said. "Good stops can relate to good points. After they made their run, we came back playing together and jelling together and all working in the same direction on offense and defense. This is a great step and a good win."
The key, O'Brien said, was ball movement. The Pacers had 24 field goals in the first half, with 18 assists.
"You shoot the ball great when you pass the ball great," O'Brien said.
Detroit guard Richard Hamilton missed all three of his field goal attempts Friday to finish scoreless in a regular-season game for the first time since 2000.
"They made some shots at the end and we missed two or three open jump shots," Pistons forward Jonas Jerebko said. "That's basketball. I think we showed we're a strong team when we play like we should."
