The Orlando Magic are feeling pretty good about Vince Carter's steady performance in recent weeks. If they can get Rashard Lewis playing at that same level, they'll be ecstatic.

Lewis looks to build on his best game of an otherwise awful month Thursday when the Magic - seeking their 10th victory in 11 games - visit the Miami Heat.

Neither Carter (42.5 percent) nor Lewis (42.9) has shot the ball well this season. Orlando (48-21) has plenty of other options to compensate for that duo's struggles, but getting both stars on track could be critical with the playoffs approaching.

Carter seems well on his way. The former Rookie of the Year has averaged 19.0 points on 54.6 percent shooting over his last 10 games as the Magic have gone 9-1.

Lewis, on the other hand, has been completely off his game. He had averaged 4.0 points over Orlando's previous three games heading into San Antonio's visit on Wednesday, and coach Stan Van Gundy said his two-time All-Star lacked energy after Lewis shot 1 for 7 in Sunday's loss to Charlotte.

That changed against the Spurs. Lewis had 20 points while shooting 7 of 10 - hitting four 3-pointers - and Carter scored a game-high 24 in a 110-84 rout.

"Everybody's going to have ups and down, but he's always been a guy who bounces back," Van Gundy said of Lewis. "He had a good night."

While Thursday's meeting is the last of the regular season between the Magic and the Heat, it could be a playoff preview. Orlando is the East's No. 2 seed, with Miami currently in the seventh slot.

The Heat (35-33) won the first two games of the season series as Lewis struggled, scoring nine points in each game and shooting 25.0 percent.

He fared much better versus Miami on Feb. 28 at home. Lewis had 22 points to lead the Magic to a 96-80 victory on a night Dwight Howard scored seven points.

"You never want to see a guy struggle the way Dwight did, but if he does, we've got no choice but to step up and contribute a little more," Lewis said.

Jermaine O'Neal and Miami have done a solid job neutralizing Howard this season, limiting him to averages of 12.0 points and 11.7 rebounds in the three meetings.

Wade has managed 23.3 points on 39.3 percent shooting against Orlando, but he's elevated his game so far in March to help the Heat get back in the playoff picture.

In ninth place after the Feb. 28 loss to the Magic, the Heat have since won six of eight behind 30.3 points per game from Wade.

Yet one night before Orlando routed the Spurs, Miami couldn't deliver against San Antonio. Wade had 28 points Tuesday but his teammates shot 36.5 percent in an 88-76 defeat.

"We got beat in two departments - one, any kind of energy, effort, toughness type play," coach Erik Spoelstra said. "And simply at the end of the possessions, they were brilliant.''

Michael Beasley scored just six points Tuesday after missing two games with a bruised thigh. To beat Orlando, the Heat may need a better performance from the 2008 No. 2 overall draft pick.

Beasley has averaged 18.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in the two wins against the Magic, but had one point, two boards and four fouls in last month's loss.

Magic have just the trick in OT win over Heat

MIAMI (NBA.com exclusive) -- Vince Carter knew it was going to happen. Carter, the veteran Orlando swingman, had been noticing when he drove the ball to the basket Miami forward Michael Beasley sagged down to the lane to help defend, leaving Magic forward Rashard Lewis wide open.

And that's exactly what happened late in overtime Thursday. Carter drove. Beasley, who usually isn't on the court at so late in a close game, came over to help. So, Carter passed to Lewis, who hit a 3-pointer from in front of the Heat's bench with 28.4 seconds left to deliver Orlando a 108-102 overtime victory at AmericanAirlines Arena.

"I told him, 'If you're open I'm passing you the darn ball,' " Carter said.

That was despite the fact Lewis missed two similar three-pointers in regulation.

"I knew if he kept leaving me in the corner I was going to make one," Lewis said.

The game-winning observation and game-winning jumper were extra special considering Orlando (49-21), which was playing the second night of a back-to-back, on the road, and without forward Mickael Pietrus (ankle). The Magic, which made 11 3-pointers, used a team effort to pick up the slack.

Carter had a team-high 27 points, Lewis had 24 points and 11 rebounds, guard Jameer Nelson had 15 points, forward Matt Barnes had 13 points and nine rebounds, and center Dwight Howard, who was limited to 31 minutes because of foul trouble, finished with 10 points, 11 rebounds.

"It was a good game," said Barnes, who had the burden of defending Heat guard Dwyane Wade. "We needed it."

The Heat (35-34) is trying to emerge from a five-team battle for the final four Eastern Conference playoff spots. Miami entered Thursday's game as the No. 7 seed and had a chance to move into a statistical tie for sixth with Charlotte (35-32, .522) with a victory. The Heat remains the No. 7 seed with the loss.

Miami stayed in Thursday's game thanks to a superb effort by Wade (36 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists). But Orlando smothered Wade in the overtime, sometimes sending the 6-foot-10 Lewis over to help defend. Wade was 0-for-1 for two points in overtime. Overall, Miami was 1-for-6 for seven points in the overtime.

"We battled, we competed," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "I have no problem with the way we fought. We were in the fight."

Actually, just getting to overtime was an accomplishment for the Heat. They trailed 76-71 going into the fourth period, and Orlando took its biggest lead of the game at 86-76 on a 3-pointer by Lewis with 6:27 left in regulation.

But Wade's tremendous fourth quarter (12 points, seven rebounds, two assists) brought the Heat all the way back. He had a chance to win the game in regulation but Barnes smothered him and forced an off-balance jumper at the buzzer that wasn't close. Center Jermaine O'Neal (14 points) and guard Carlos Arroyo (11 points) were the only other Miami players to score in double digits.

"We threw every punch we had at them and they came back and countered it almost every time," Wade said.

Howard picked up his fourth foul just 12 seconds into the third quarter and went to the bench with the game tied at 54. Orlando managed to extend its lead with Howard on the bench, however, by playing its trademark Stan Van Gundy rugged defense. The result was the Magic held the Heat to just 17 points in the third quarter and took a 76-71 lead into the final period.

Actually, both teams put the defensive hammer down in the second half, which could be expected. Orlando entered ranked first in opponents' field goal percentage (.437) and third in points allowed per game (95.0). Miami was fourth in opponents' field goal percentage (.443) and fifth in points allowed per game (95.1).

Orlando simply had more difference-makers Thursday.

"I was proud of our guys," Van Gundy said. "But we were very fortunate to win."
