DENVER (NBA.com exclusive) -- George Karl can talk all day, but Tuesday he was mostly silent.
It wasn't what the Nuggets coach wanted, but his ongoing treatment for throat and neck cancer has made it tough for him to speak. Although he was on the bench for Denver's 97-87 win over the Wizards, he let his assistants and players take control.
"He told us before the game he wasn't going to do too much," said Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony, who had a game-high 29 points and 12 rebounds. "He was going to let Adrian Dantley continue to do what he's doing and he was going to chime in here and there. It's just good to have him on the sidelines with us. Even though he can't say much the message is getting to us."
While Karl provided some paternal comfort to his team, Dantley became the mouthpiece. Denver's lead assistant, who guided the team to a 3-1 road trip that ended Monday, spoke to the media before and after the game while Karl rested his throat.
"It worked fine," Dantley said. "He didn't have to raise his voice too much. He got his point across to the players."
Karl stayed home during the Nuggets' four-game road trip for treatment. He had a feeding tube surgically implanted into his stomach on March 8 and received chemotherapy.
The first half of Tuesday's game wasn't much of a welcome back for Karl. The Nuggets looked sluggish, losing the rebounding battle and turning the ball over 10 times. Even with their somewhat sloppy play, the Nuggets stayed close. They held the Wizards to 47.6 percent shooting and trailed 45-39 at the break.
The Nuggets didn't take their first lead until Arron Afflalo hit a 3-pointer to make it 54-52 with 7:18 left in the third. They led 65-63 heading into the fourth, when J.R. Smith scored 13 of his 17 points to make sure Denver never lost the lead.
The Wizards, who have lost nine straight, cut it to four on a couple of occasions but they couldn't match Denver's firepower. Andray Blatche had 23, Al Thornton scored 16 and Alonzo Gee added 13, but it wasn't enough to prevent the team's 11th loss in the last 12 games.
"That's the hardest thing," Blatche said. "With the success I'm having, I'm not as excited off of it because we're losing. Just stay positive and try to keep everyone together."
Blatche has been a bright spot in a tough stretch. Since the All-Star break he is averaging 24-5 points and 9.6 rebounds a game, so it was a blow to the Wizards when he left the game in the fourth quarter after rolling his left ankle.
"I just tweaked it a little bit. It's a little swollen, a little sore," Blatche said. "I should be alright for Friday's game. I'll get treatment tomorrow, ice it up tonight, try it out at practice on Thursday and see if I can go."
The Wizards get a rare respite after playing five games in six nights, which included three games on consecutive nights because of a makeup with Atlanta on Thursday. That rough stretch took its toll in the fourth quarter.
"I thought we played pretty well for five games in six nights, five different cities," Washington coach Flip Saunders said. "We gave ourselves a chance, a two-point game in the fourth quarter, we just didn't have enough juice down the stretch."
The Nuggets felt for the Wizards, but they weren't going to let them off the hook. Denver is fighting for a top seed in the Western Conference, and although Tuesday's win wouldn't fill a highlight reel, it felt good.
"It was an ugly game but we got it done," Chauncey Billups said.
They also gave their coach something to smile about. Karl told nuggets.com beginning Friday he will have 12 more treatments, which could keep him away from the bench for some of Denver's last 14 games.
The Nuggets have rallied around their coach while he battles cancer, and each victory energizes him.
"He said before the game wins are the best treatment for him," forward Joey Graham said. "Hopefully we can keep this team rolling and win a championship for him and he'll be completely healed. That's the plan."
