MIAMI (NBA.com exclusive) -- The San Antonio Spurs aren't back to being title contenders yet. But as the calendar gets deeper into March and gets closer to playoff time, the Spurs seem to be gathering momentum.
On Tuesday the Spurs put on a dominating performance in crushing the Heat, 88-76, at AmericanAirlines Arena. The victory was the fourth consecutive for San Antonio (40-25), which is fighting with Portland, Phoenix and Oklahoma City for the Nos. 5 through 8 playoff berths in the West, and its ninth victory in 11 games.
"I think we've got a pretty long ways to go," Spurs guard Manu Ginobili said, "but it's good to see improvement."
San Antonio, fueled by an explosive game from Ginobili (22 points), led wire-to-wire and maintained a double-digit lead for most of the second half. And when the Heat, who were led by guard Dwyane Wade's 28-point effort, got close at 71-65 with about 8:30 to play, Ginobili provided breathing room with a pair of timely 3-pointers.
"He makes everyone better," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "He's one of the finest competitors we have in the league. When he is Manu Ginobili we are a significantly better basketball team, and he's been Manu for the last month."
San Antonio's defense, which got solid contributions from Tim Duncan (12 points, 11 rebounds) and Richard Jefferson (15 points, eight rebounds), held Miami to 38.5 percent shooting. And defense, according to Popovich, is what wins for the Spurs.
"It was one of our better defensive games of the season," he said.
It was an ugly way for Miami (35-33), currently the seventh seed in the East, to have its three-game win streak and six-game home win streak come to an end.
"They were sharp," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "They came into this game ready. You could tell. They jumped us."
But Miami still has momentum it can harness having won six of its last eight games. The Heat, who are involved in a tight five-team race for the last four Eastern Conference playoff spots, entered having won six consecutive home games, their longest such streak in three seasons.
Wade started out missing nine of his first 13 shots, but then got hot, hitting six of his next 11. But Ginobili was too good. The lanky Argentinean cut through the Heat defense with relative ease all night, and after hitting a 3-pointer to give the Spurs a 79-67 lead, took a charge from Wade, forcing him into his fifth turnover. Soon, Miami's comeback hopes were over as San Antonio went ahead, 85-69.
But what can you expect from a Miami team that started out missing eight of its first nine shots with two turnovers? Forward Michael Beasley (six points, five rebounds) was making his return from a two-game absence due to a bruised left thigh, and forward Dorell Wright was making his return after a two-game absence after being arrested on suspicion of DUI. As for the players who have been in the lineup, guard Mario Chalmers and forward Udonis Haslem (10 points, 12 rebounds) were both battling a nasty stomach virus.
The Spurs are still struggling to find their identity three-quarters into the season, which is highly unusual for them. Popovich blames poor defense for San Antonio's inconsistency.
"We're not as good of a defensive club as we were the last 10 years, but we're better than we were a month ago," he said.
And be warned, if you even hint Jefferson is the cause of the un-Spurs-like season, you'd better duck quickly afterward because Popovich might take a swing at you.
"I think he's starting to understand the system better," Popovich said. "He's fitting in with other people where he deferred (earlier in the season) way too much at times. Now he's aggressive on both ends of the court -- rebounding on one end and the other end he's attacking the hoop."
Add it all up, and factor in the return of guard Tony Parker (broken hand) -- who was injured a week ago but could return for the start of the playoffs -- and San Antonio might be a team to watch.
"For three, four, five games now we've had that effort, we've had that focus, and we're kind of doing it the right way," Duncan said.
