Pistons-Celtics Preview

It was a rough week for the Boston Celtics. A visit from the lowly Detroit Pistons to open a brief home stretch could help them get back on track.

Coming off another disappointing loss to the top team in the Eastern Conference, the Celtics look to bounce against the struggling Pistons on Monday night.

Boston (41-24) shot 40.0 percent and allowed LeBron James to score 24 of his 30 points in the second half of a 104-93 loss at Cleveland on Sunday. It was the Celtics' second consecutive decisive loss to the East leaders, and it concluded a six-day stretch where the Atlantic Division leaders went 1-3 after winning four in a row.

Though the aging Celtics have a comfortable division lead, they are fourth in the East, 10 games behind the Cavaliers and looking like a team that's playing tired, rather than inspired.

"Looking at the defense from the (2008) championship year, when we won it, it doesn't look the same,'' said former Celtic and current Cavalier Leon Powe. "It looks like the rotation is slower and they ain't getting to the shooters and closing out like they did before. I don't know if it's effort or maybe they're a little older."

Though Boston's big three of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen are in their 30s, they are still some of the NBA's top all-around players. Allen scored 20 points while Pierce and Garnett each had 18 on Sunday. As a group, however, Boston's struggles have come on both ends of the court.

Boston has been held to 93 or fewer points in four of five games, and it's allowed an average of 106.0 in its last three.

"We've just got to keep dealing," coach Doc Rivers said. "Our goal (is) to get us at our peak when the playoffs start and see where we are at, but we've got to get there and we have to work there. We have a lot of work to do."

The Celtics can start Monday in the opener of a favorable two-game home stretch against Detroit (23-43) and New York.

Though Boston split the two previous games with Detroit - both at The Palace of Auburn Hills - this season, the Pistons have lost eight of 10 overall heading into this contest, including a 105-100 loss to the Celtics on March 2. Allen had 18 points and Rajon Rondo added 15 with 11 assists for the Celtics in that contest.

Rondo is averaging 18.0 points and 9.0 assists against Detroit this season.

The Pistons, on the verge of missing the playoffs for the first time since 2000-01, look to bounce back from a 112-99 loss at Atlanta on Saturday.

Jason Maxiell had 19 points with 12 rebounds and Richard Hamilton added 18 as Detroit trailed by as many as 28 while losing its sixth straight road game and falling to 7-25 away from home.

"It's always tough to come back when you're down by so much,'' Hamilton said. "You're fighting an uphill battle the whole game. "I can't see any positives out of this game."

Detroit's 6-foot-10 rookie Jonas Jerebko had 16 points and 10 rebounds earlier this month against Boston, but his status is uncertain after injurying his shoulder against Atlanta.

Celtics regroup from loss, have way with Pistons in rout

BOSTON (NBA.com exclusive) -- For the second time in four nights, the Boston Celtics locked up a win by halftime.

Only problem is, those wins were against the Indiana Pacers and Monday against the Detroit Pistons, a 119-93 victory. Sandwiched in the middle was a head-shaker in Cleveland Sunday.

"After that miserable display yesterday, we had to come back strong," Rasheed Wallace said.

Altogether, the net result is probably somewhere below zero. Still, the two dominating wins were reminiscent of a time, much earlier in the season, when the Celtics were dispensing with the dredges of the league with flicks of their wrists.

"It's just fun to be a part of," Kendrick Perkins said. "It reminds you of a time when we were playing, I think, at our best."

It worth noting that it's been some time since anyone was having fun in the Celtics locker room. Now, they finally have a reason to. One day after getting gashed by the Cavaliers, it was the Celtics doing the pushing, and the sharing, dishing a season-high tying 34 assists on 46 made field goals.

"They were good, we were bad," Pistons coach John Kuester said. "They played an outstanding basketball game and we added to it."

With all the obvious disclaimers about the quality of opponent Boston was facing in the 23-44 Pistons, the Celtics also made them look much worse with one of their best offensive performances. With the Pistons on their heels for most of the game, the Celtics did whatever they wanted, shooting 62 percent and scoring 48 points in the paint.

"We have been talking and talking," Kevin Garnett said. "At some point trying to show some actions, so it's just what it is. I'll take it though, hands down night and day, as far as yesterday [in Cleveland] till today."

Offensively, Boston's greatest shortcoming has been the inconsistency from player to player. One night Garnett would put up an encouraging double-double, but Paul Pierce would score in single digits. Or Pierce would look unstoppable and Ray Allen would disappear on the perimeter.

On Monday, everyone was present and accounted for. Pierce scored 15 points, 12 in the first quarter on six shots, Garnett pulled down eight rebounds to go with 14 points, Allen hit a pair of 3s and shot 6-for-9 overall and Perkins bounced back with 11 points, eight boards and three blocks in 24 minutes. Among the starters, only Rondo didn't hit double digits in scoring, but he was perfectly content, and well served, to play the facilitator for most of the evening.

"Tonight, there was an air to us," Garnett said. "It was grimy, it was gritty."

Better yet, once-assumed bench warmer Michael Finley, acquired a week ago, devoured all the open looks his teammates earned him, scoring 15 points on seven shots in a mere 13 minutes. On this performance alone, the veteran has surpassed expectations.

"I didn't know what to expect, honestly," Rivers said. "He hadn't played a lot this year with San Antonio and he wasn't making shots. I just don't believe a guy can forget how to shoot. So we thought if we could get him in here and get him some looks . . . they would go in."

As strong of a win as it was, the Celtics were not all sunshine and rainbows afterwards. The sentiment being that time to gain positive momentum is already in very short supply.

"There's less than 20 games left, you got to start putting it together at some time," Perkins said.
