Raptors-Trail Blazers Preview

With Brandon Roy back in All-Star form, the Portland Trail Blazers are closing in on a playoff berth. Chris Bosh's return hasn't had the same effect for the Toronto Raptors.

Roy will try to help the Blazers to their ninth win in 11 games Sunday night against the Raptors, who are attempting to avoid a season high-tying fifth straight loss.

Portland (40-28) went 4-8 while Roy sat out with an injured right hamstring Jan. 22-Feb. 10 and split its first six games following his return Feb. 16.

He had at least 20 points in four straight games from Feb. 21-26 - including 20 in a 101-87 win in Toronto - but scored just seven in a win at Minnesota to conclude the month.

Roy has averaged 24.5 points in March, and he's scored 29.3 per game during Portland's current three-game win streak. After tallying 41 points in Thursday night's 110-105 win at Golden State, he had 28 in a 110-94 victory at Sacramento the next evening.

The Blazers have also averaged 104.3 points over the past 10 games, and that's helped them build a 4 1/2-game lead for the final Western Conference playoff spot. Portland is also just two games back of Oklahoma City in fifth place.

"My confidence is coming back and so is the swagger, which gives the team some swagger as well," Roy said. "We're starting to get healthy and teams are seeing that we are dangerous.''

Toronto, meanwhile, is coming perilously close to falling out of playoff contention after dropping eight of nine - beginning with the loss to the Blazers on Feb. 24.

The return of Bosh after he missed seven games with a sprained left ankle hasn't helped as the Raptors (32-32) have dropped four straight with their All-Star forward in the lineup.

Toronto has fallen to eighth in the East, 1 1/2 games ahead of Chicago. The Raptors, who haven't lost five in a row since Nov. 25-Dec. 2, are also in danger of dropping below .500 for the first time since Jan. 20.

"Time is ticking and it's counting down, and if we keep playing the way we are right now, we're going to be on the outside looking in," Bosh said. "Guys need to step it up.''

Bosh had 24 points and 11 rebounds in the team's latest defeat, 124-112 at Golden State on Saturday night. As Toronto concludes its four-game Western trip, he is 31 points shy of becoming the franchise's first player with 10,000 in his career.

Hedo Turkoglu will make his lone appearance in Portland this season. He reportedly gave a verbal commitment to join the Blazers in July but later backed out to sign with Toronto.

Turkoglu, though, hasn't matched the level of production from his five previous seasons in Orlando - averaging 12.0 points on 40.8 percent shooting.

He's averaged 6.5 points and shot 32.5 percent over his past six games, but scored 24 in the loss to Portland while hitting 8 of 9 shots. Turkoglu has averaged 24.7 points on 57.9 percent shooting in his last six games against the Blazers.

Roy led Portland with 20 points in the win, and Andre MIller contributed 18 and 10 assists.

Portland, which has won six of seven at home against Toronto, is trying to sweep the Raptors for the second straight season.

Batum's fourth quarter perfection leads Blazers past Raptors

PORTLAND (NBA.com exclusive) -- There were others who played key roles for the Trail Blazers in a 109-98 victory over Toronto Sunday night at the Rose Garden.

Portland might not have won, however, without the performance of Nicolas Batum.

The second-year small forward scored 13 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter as the Blazers (41-28) held off every Raptor surge to win their ninth game in the last 11 outings.

Batum was 4-for-4 from the field, 2-for-2 from 3-point range and 3-for-3 from the foul line in the final period, and did his job defensively as well, keeping Toronto's Hedo Turkoglu scoreless over the final seven minutes.

"Nic played really good tonight," Portland's Brandon Roy said. "He was knocking down his open looks, and defensively, speeding Hedo up and making his job tougher."

It was the fifth straight loss and ninth setback in 10 games for Toronto (32-33), which has a precarious hold on the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Chicago (31-34) is one game back.

The effort was better, however, than the last two games ? a 113-90 loss at Sacramento and a 124-112 defeat at Golden State ? as the Raptors hung around until the closing minutes of what was the final stop on a four-game road trip.

"We competed pretty hard," Toronto coach Jay Triano said. "We told the guys at halftime ... if we just stayed with what we were doing, we'd have a chance, and we did. We got it to two (points), and unfortunately we couldn't close the door."

Toronto closed a 15-point third-quarter deficit to 93-91 on a Sonny Weems jump shot with 6:15 remaining. The Blazers then went on a 14-4 run, capped by Batum's 3-pointer with 1:11 to go, for a 107-95 lead. Game over.

"We tied (the Raptors) up defensively, got a couple of scores and put a little pressure back on them," said Roy, who scored 20 points but was only 6-for-16 shooting. "Nobody really panicked."

Especially Batum, the 6-8 Frenchman who missed the first 45 games of the season following October shoulder surgery.

Batum finished 7-for-9 from the field, including 5-for-6 from 3-point territory. He also had two blocked shots, including a crowd-pleasing swat of a Weems drive inside the final minute that put the nail in the coffin for the visitors.

"Nic got back to focusing on the defensive end of the floor, and he allowed the offense to come to him," Portland coach Nate McMillan said. "He's going to get open shots just because of who he's on the floor with. It's a matter of knocking down the shots. Tonight he did that. If he can continue, which we think he can, he's going to help us."

Batum spent most of his time defensively on Turkoglu, who got off only seven shots in 35 minutes.

"My focus is on defense," Batum said. "That is my first job. Even in the fourth quarter, I just tried to stop Hedo first. But I try to take my open shots, too. Roy drives, and I am open."

Batum leads Portland in 3-point percentage at .466. He doesn't have enough attempts to qualify, but it would rank him third in the NBA behind Washington's Mike Miller (.495) and Cleveland's Daniel Gibson (.479).

Six Blazers scored in double figures, including LaMarcus Aldridge, who had 16 of his 22 points in the first half. Aldridge also collared 12 rebounds to post his team-high 20th double-double of the season. He had eight offensive rebounds ? all in the first half ? as Portland took 19 off the offensive glass and won the board battle 40-34.

"The boards were the difference in the game," Triano said.

The other major factor was 3-point shooting. Portland was 12-for-20, including 9-for-12 in the first half. Toronto was 5-for-15.

The Raptors, though, couldn't have shot much better. They were .549 for the game, .618 for the first half and .737 in the first quarter ? and trailed 32-30 at that point.

Chris Bosh was terrific, scoring 28 points to go with seven rebounds.

"The guys feel pretty good about the way they played," Triano said. "We battled. If we play like this, we are going to win a lot more games."

Portland is in the eighth spot in the West, but only one game behind sixth-place Phoenix (41-26) and a half-game back of seventh-place San Antonio (39-25) .

"We're focusing on ourselves," McMillan said. "We're still in that eighth spot, but we have an opportunity to move up.

"If we take care of business on the floor, we don't worry about where we finish as long as we're in the playoffs. If we're winning, we'll have that opportunity. If we start dropping games, we put yourselves in danger of not getting that."
