Pacers-Bucks Preview

With three impressive wins during this homestand, the Milwaukee Bucks have showed that their run over the last two months isn't a fluke.

The surging Bucks try for their sixth straight win as they look to sweep the regular-season series against the Indiana Pacers for the first time in 28 years Sunday afternoon.

Milwaukee (35-29) has won 11 of 12 and is 17-4 since late January, but after primarily defeating sub-.500 teams early during that stretch, it's beaten Cleveland, Boston and Utah in its last three games.

The Bucks haven't reached the playoffs since 2006, but they sit in fifth place in the Eastern Conference and seem to be gaining momentum.

"We're having a great stretch," coach Scott Skiles said following the 95-87 win over the Jazz on Friday. "I don't mean to be underplaying it at all, but at the same time we're 35-29. We're not 55 and something. We're battling for a spot. The guys were talking about it now, that we've got a game on Sunday and we need to get that one as well. It's not something I need to bring up that much."

While the Bucks, who have won six in a row at home, have been especially helped by the their trade with Chicago for John Salmons - averaging 19.3 points since arriving in Milwaukee - what has been most notable about their current streak is their defense.

The Bucks are allowing 83.4 points per game over the last five and they've been especially efficient defending against the 3-pointer. Utah was 0 for 10 from beyond the arc and Milwaukee's last five opponents are a combined 16 for 62 (25.8 percent).

"It definitely feels good to win games," said Salmons, who led Milwaukee with 24 points Friday. "I think everybody on the team was contributing and that's what we need. We need everybody to play well, particularly on defense, and that's how you win games, by getting stops. I think our confidence has grown, but we still got to take it one game at a time."

After facing three of the NBA's best teams, the Bucks will close the homestand against the struggling Pacers.

Indiana (21-44) has lost five of six, falling 122-103 at Boston on Friday. The Pacers have given up 100 or more points in nine of their last 12 and are allowing an average of 111.0 in their last nine. They allowed the Celtics to shoot 58.4 percent.

Roy Hibbert scored 23 points and Troy Murphy had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Indiana, which never got closer than 16 in the second half and was short-handed after T.J. Ford left with 7:33 remaining in the first quarter due to a sore left groin. He did not return and it's uncertain whether he'll be available to play Sunday.

"They came out and pounded us and we never recovered from that," coach Jim O'Brien said.

The loss was the Pacers' seventh straight on the road. They've allowed 120 or more points in four of their last six away from home.

The Bucks are 3-0 against the Pacers and are looking to sweep the season series for the first time since 1981-82, when they won six meetings.

Bucks fend off furious rally from Pacers, win sixth straight

MILWAUKEE (NBA.com exclusive) -- An ugly win is still a win.

That's what the Milwaukee Bucks were telling themselves Sunday after their 98-94 victory over the Indiana Pacers at the Bradley Center in a game that was much tighter than it needed to be.

John Salmons' two free throws with 1.1 seconds left finally salted away the victory as Milwaukee held off a pesky Indiana team that was led by Danny Granger's 29 points.

Jerry Stackhouse scored 20 points off the bench to lead the Bucks, who won their sixth straight and 12th in their last 13. Milwaukee improved to a season-best seven games over .500 at 36-29.

But the Bucks spent most of the afternoon making it tough on themselves.

"Even when we had a nice lead, it was obvious to anyone who's been watching us play that we didn't play as well today as we have been playing," Bucks coach Scott Skiles said. "We weren't as sharp, we fumbled a lot of balls, we had difficulty on the break, we had difficulty kind of getting anything going.

"Sometimes when that happens and you still have a lead, you can kind of feel that you're a little complacent out there. You know you're not playing as well as you have and yet you have this 12-14 point lead. Sometimes you feel like maybe you don't deserve it and things kind of go against you then."

That's exactly what happened in the fourth quarter.

What was a 16-point lead earlier in the period and was still an 89-76 margin with 5:37 left, suddenly had melted down to a 96-94 lead on Solomon Jones' 14-footer with 36.9 seconds left. When Andrew Bogut missed with 17 seconds left, the Pacers rebounded with a chance to tie or go ahead.

But Granger's jumper from the lane was challenged by Bogut and bounded off the left side of the rim. Salmons went to the floor to secure the ball -- and the victory -- as he was fouled by Granger with 1.1 left.

When Salmons made both free throws, the 15,107 fans at the Bradley Center could heave a sigh of relief as the Bucks completed a 4-0 season sweep of the struggling Pacers, who fell to 21-45. It's the Bucks' first sweep of the Pacers since going 6-0 in the 1981-82 season.

"They (the Pacers) just didn't quit playing," said rookie point guard Brandon Jennings, who finished with eight points and eight assists. "It was a tough one. They're still an NBA team so you can't take anyone lightly."

Bogut had 17 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks but was just 7-for-18 from the floor. Salmons finished with 12 but didn't record a field goal in the first half and was just 3-for-11 for the game.

The difference was the bench. Along with Stackhouse's season high, Luke Ridnour had 13 points and Kurt Thomas posted nine rebounds and six points.

The Bucks held a 76-62 lead after three quarters thanks to a 41-27 edge on the boards and defense that held Indiana to 32.7 percent shooting (17-for-52).

But Indiana went 10-for-20 and posted five offensive rebounds in the final 12 minutes.

Jones tallied nine points and three offensive boards in seven minutes of action in the period after not playing in the first 41 minutes of the game, and Milwaukee did not record a single offensive rebound in the second half after grabbing 14 in the first half.

"All of their offensive rebounds were in the first half and we held them to 36 percent shooting," Indiana coach Jim O'Brien said. "In the second half, they didn't have any offensive rebounds. To me, that was a good end to the game."

Not good enough, though.

Milwaukee used its board work and defense to build a 49-41 lead at the half. Stackhouse had 11 points, including three 3-pointers, to lead what was an otherwise lackluster offense.

"It was ugly, but we managed to get the win, and we'll take it," said Jennings.

And for the Bucks, it's a sign of the progress they've made to play poorly and still come out with a victory.

"Even more than that -- and 'Stack' (Stackhouse) and I were talking about this a couple games ago -- a bigger sign is that even though we won the game we're not happy with the way we played. We're not satisfied with how we played, so I think that's more of a sign of a good team."

But ...

"We're definitely going to take the win," Salmons said. "We'll take the win and move on."

The Bucks won their seventh straight home game and completed a 4-0 home stand before they go west for a three-game trip that starts Wednesday against the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Pacers entered the game without point guard T.J. Ford, who will be out 7-10 days with a strained groin he suffered Friday night. Forward Mike Dunleavy dressed but did not play because of a right eye bruise.
