Clippers-Spurs Preview

With their No. 1 draft pick sidelined for the season, their second-leading scorer nursing a leg injury and their general manager recently shown the door, it's no surprise the Los Angeles Clippers are mired in a six-game losing streak.

What would be stunning is if they can snap it Saturday night.

The Clippers' 15-game skid against the San Antonio Spurs is the league's longest current drought against a single opponent, and they'll also be looking for their first-ever win in 15 visits to the AT&T Center.

The last time Los Angeles (25-41) played San Antonio was in Kim Hughes' interim coaching debut Feb. 6 at Staples Center. Hughes was taking over for Mike Dunleavy, who stepped down as the team's on-court leader two days earlier after 6 1/2 seasons on the sidelines.

Hughes didn't have any better luck than Dunleavy against the Spurs in the 103-87 loss. San Antonio (38-25) has won three meetings this season by an average of 19.3 points, the past 15 overall in the series by 15.5 points per game and all 14 games versus the Clippers at the AT&T Center by an average of 13.4 points since the facility opened in 2002.

"It's going to take us a while before we see results," All-Star center Chris Kaman said after the Clippers' latest loss to the Spurs. "It's a work in progress right now."

There haven't been many positive signs in the past month. Los Angeles has dropped 13 of 17 under Hughes, and on Tuesday the organization relieved Dunleavy - still serving as general manager - of his remaining duties.

Added to the front office uncertainty is a six-game losing streak that's tied for the team's longest of the season.

The absence of Eric Gordon, who at 17.2 points per game is the team's second-leading scorer behind Kaman, hasn't helped. Gordon has missed the first four games of this road trip with a sore leg and is likely out for Saturday's finale as well.

The Clippers had their best shooting performance since Hughes took over Friday in Charlotte, but it wasn't enough. Baron Davis scored 24 points and Los Angeles shot 57.5 percent, but 23 turnovers were costly in a 106-98 loss.

"We don't share the ball enough,'' Hughes said. "I think when they double-teamed us, we held the ball too long. We have to be more unselfish when we get trapped."

While the Clippers are struggling without Gordon, the Spurs hardly seem fazed by a broken right ring finger that may cost Tony Parker the rest of the regular season.

Manu Ginobili followed his 38-point performance in a Monday loss to the Cavaliers by scoring 28 in a 97-87 win Wednesday against the New York Knicks, then fellow guard George Hill had 19 points and eight assists Friday in a 103-85 rout at Minnesota.

San Antonio has won six of seven.

"We're right in the mix of things, and we're trying to move up and try to jockey for some position so every win is a good win right now,'' Tim Duncan said.

The Spurs' new starting backcourt has kept Duncan from having to carry the offensive load, as he's averaged just 15.0 points and 6.8 rebounds over his past five games.

It's possible coach Gregg Popovich could rest Duncan Saturday in the second night of a back-to-back, but he only played 25 minutes Friday and has averaged just over 20 in the last four meetings with Los Angeles.

San Antonio is 4-4 when playing the second of a back-to-back, while the Clippers - also playing their fourth game in five nights - are 4-13.

Spurs hand Clippers season-worst seventh-straight loss

SAN ANTONIO (NBA.com exclusive) -- There are plenty of stats that show the depths of the Clippers' problems this season, but the most telling is points in the paint. For the second-straight night, the Clippers gave up at least 60 points in the paint, and coach Kim Hughes knows the reason why.

"You have to compete," Hughes said. "We probably had four guys compete tonight. That's not enough. Whether you're playing back-to-backs, four games in five days, irregardless. You've got to compete."

Indeed, the Clippers gave themselves no chance from the start on Saturday night. Los Angeles trailed the Spurs 32-18 after the first quarter and trimmed San Antonio's lead to less than double digits just once more. By the end of it, San Antonio handed the Clippers their season-worst seventh-straight loss in a 118-88 blowout at AT&T Center.

Hughes thinks probably four players competed Saturday. Some of his players think it was worse than that after San Antonio shot 58 percent compared to 45 for LA.

"I think everybody means well, but at the end of the day playing hard and being competitive is contagious, and if you have only one or two guys doing it, it's going to take a long time to get 14 guys doing that," Clippers journeyman Drew Gooden said.

The 30-point beating was the second-worse this season for LA. The Clippers have lost 16 straight to the Spurs (the biggest consecutive-game streak in a series in the NBA currently) and have never won in the seven seasons of the AT&T Center.

With both Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili playing fewer than 20 minutes apiece, Matt Bonner came off the bench with 21 points on 8-for-9 shooting (he was 5-for-6 from the 3-point line). Malik Hairston (6-for-8 shooting) scored 12, and Roger Mason Jr. added 11 to cap off the double-figure scorers off the bench.

The starters were led by Richard Jefferson's 18 points and nine rebounds (he had six rebounds in the first quarter, which was as many as all the Clippers players had).

Ginobili had 14 points in 18 minutes, and George Hill put up 14 points with his career-high 11 assists. He had eight assists in the first quarter.

The most impressive stat on the final sheet for Spurs coach Gregg Popovich was the minutes played for aging stars Duncan and Ginobili one night after playing in Minnesota. Duncan scored eight points in eight first-half minutes. He ended up playing five more minutes, then sat for the rest of the night.

"On back-to-backs, if I can give those guys rest, it's very important," Popovich said. "Tonight worked out well."

Baron Davis (he led LA with 22 points) looked like he was going to follow his strong night Friday in Charlotte (10-for-15 shooting against the Bobcats) by hitting 7-for-10 in the first half. But he made two of his next seven shots, including one that was blocked.

That came when he was working against Spurs reserve Cedric Jackson, a D-League call-up playing in his second NBA game. Davis drove the lane and got stuffed. Jackson did it, which might be enough to land him another 10-day contract.

If it doesn't work out for Jackson in San Antonio, maybe the Clippers can get him. They need the defense.

If it wasn't obvious enough when the Spurs scored 65 points in the first half -- three short of their season best -- it was glaring on a couple of plays in the third quarter.

First, Hill passed up an open shot because Antonio McDyess was open closer to the basket. But McDyess passed up a shot because Ginobili was even more wide open than he was. Standing just beyond the 3-point line, Ginobili had so much spacing that he took an extra second to set his feet just so underneath him, then fired up the swish that gave San Antonio a 21-point lead with seven minutes left.

The next time Ginobili got his hands on the ball, the Clippers jumped out toward him, and he zipped a pass underneath for DeJaun Blair and a slam dunk for a 79-56 lead.

The Spurs (39-25) have won seven of eight and are at a season-best 14 games above the .500 mark. They'll need everything they can get because they play four of their next five on the road before returning home to play the Lakers and Cavaliers.
