Nuggets-Grizzlies Preview

A classic Carmelo Anthony scoring run has led the Denver Nuggets during their latest winning streak. A matchup with the Memphis Grizzlies doesn't seem likely to slow him down.

Winners of five straight, the Nuggets hope for another big game from Anthony as they visit the Grizzlies on Saturday night.

Denver (44-21) is ranked second in the league in scoring, averaging 107.6 points, but it has been even better during its winning streak, posting 114.2 per contest.

Anthony had 32 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Nuggets to a 102-95 win over New Orleans on Friday night. His fast-break layup gave Denver an 88-86 lead with 5:32 remaining.

"That's a time where you really lock in and focus on trying to take the shots you want to take, try to get to your spot," Anthony said.

The three-time All-Star has scored 30 points or more in four of his last five games.

Two of Anthony's biggest scoring games this season were against Memphis (35-31), which is surrendering 102.8 points per game. Though Anthony is averaging 41.5 points in those contests, the season series is tied at 1.

Denver had won eight straight against Memphis before a 102-96 road loss Dec. 20.

Nuggets point guard Chauncey Billups missed that contest due to a strained groin. He is averaging 24.8 points and 9.4 assists in his last five road games versus the Grizzlies.

Anthony Carter has been Billups' primary backup while Ty Lawson rests a bruised shoulder. Lawson has missed the last six games, but may be close to returning.

Denver has also been without Kenyon Martin (knee) for the past four games. Martin, out indefinitely, has been replaced in the starting lineup by Johan Petro.

George Karl's absence, however, has been perhaps the Nuggets' most significant loss. He will miss this entire five-game road trip to adjust to a feeding tube that was placed into his stomach as part of his cancer treatment.

Karl, undergoing a rigorous six-week treatment program of radiation and chemotherapy after being diagnosed with neck and throat cancer last month, said he hopes to be ready to rejoin the team when it returns home to face Washington on Tuesday night.

Karl's assistant, Adrian Dantley, has been coaching the team in his place and has managed to keep it focused.

Memphis is also enjoying a strong run, winning three straight and five of six after losing 11 of its previous 16. The Grizzlies have won two straight at home after losing their previous eight.

Memphis shot 90.9 percent (30 for 33) from the line in a 119-112 win over New York on Friday night.

Grizzlies forward Zach Randolph had 10 of his 24 points from the line while adding 11 rebounds. Randolph had 32 points and set what was then a career high with 24 rebounds in December's matchup with the Nuggets.

Randolph topped that mark with 25 boards in a 120-109 victory over the Knicks on Feb. 27. He's averaging 20.7 points and a career-best 11.8 rebounds.

Smith's three-point barrage leads Nuggets past Grizzlies

Memphis (NBA.com exclusive) -- When J.R. Smith is in a zone, there is nobody better in the NBA. That assessment comes courtesy of Denver Nuggets teammate Chauncey Billups, who finds that his job becomes remarkably easy when Smith settles into a rhythm.

"You just got to get the ball to him," Billups said.

Such was the case during the Nuggets' 125-108 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies at FedExForum on Saturday night. En route to a game-high 30 points, Smith sank 7-of-10 3-pointers and went 11-of-16 from the field as Denver (45-21) extended its winning streak to six games before 17,023.

The Nuggets socked the Grizzlies with a 17-0 run that bridged the third and fourth quarters, turning an 85-80 deficit into a 97-85 lead. The spurt included three 3-pointers from Smith, who was operating in his own stratosphere.

And the Grizzlies, one night after holding off the New York Knicks, collapsed.

"It's crazy," Smith said. "I got it going, but the most important thing was we got it going as a team. Got out in the open court, got some easy chippies."

Assistant coach Adrian Dantley, filling in for head coach George Karl as he undergoes cancer treatment, said he knows not to depend on Smith. When he is bad, he can be terrible. But when he is good, he can be great. So if he struggled against the New Orleans Hornets on Friday, going 1-of-12 from the field and finishing with three points, no one should have been particularly surprised to see him bounce back and carry the Nuggets the next night.

"I think a lot of times, people don't realize how difficult it is to come off the bench and play well and shoot well every night," Dantley said. "Some days you're going to be off, but he has a great knack of just being able to score coming off the bench."

The game was a crucial blow to Memphis' postseason aspirations -- then again, all their games are critical these days. The Grizzlies (35-32), sitting in ninth place in the Western Conference standings, are playing a desperate game of catch-up for the eighth seed, and this did not help matters. Memphis had won three straight.

"We competed," Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said. "They just beat us. They got rolling. They started making buckets."

The Grizzlies packed the first half with hustle plays. There was Rudy Gay draining a 3-pointer after Marc Gasol ripped a rebound away from the Nuggets' John Petro. There was Zach Randolph bouncing a loose ball off the Nuggets' Malik Allen for an extra possession that led to another long jumper by Gay. There was the Nuggets' Carmelo Anthony letting a ball go out of bounds -- or so he thought, until Gay sidestepped him and slapped the ball to midcourt, setting up a fast-break layup for O.J. Mayo.

In the first half, the Grizzlies outscored the Nuggets on second-chance points, 15-6. The sad news for them was that their lead was only 63-57 at the break. Smith deserved much of the credit for keeping Denver involved, coming off the bench for a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter.

But as the second half wore on, the Grizzlies were hindered by pitiful transition defense. The Nuggets shot 58.8 percent from the field -- a statistic inflated by countless layups and Smith's long-range pyrotechnics.

Late in the fourth quarter, Smith's teammates were looking for him on every possession for turnaround 20-footers over hapless defenders.

"It looked like they didn't have anything in their bodies in the second half," Dantley said.

Anthony spent a good portion of the second half jawing with two fans who sat courtside. He won that contest, laughing his way off the court when the Grizzlies called a timeout after his jumper pushed the Nuggets ahead, 114-95. He finished with 24 points on 12-of-22 shooting.

Mayo led the Grizzlies with 25 points on 9-of-16 shooting, and Randolph added 22 points and 12 rebounds.

But the big story was the Nuggets' bench, which was led by Smith and has become known in the locker room as "Crucial Conflict," its nom de guerre.

"Because they're just wild," said Kenyon Martin, who continued to sit out with a knee injury.

Backup point guard Anthony Carter was particularly effective, finishing with seven assists in 17 minutes.

"Our bench was great," Billups said. "Our bench was really what won us the game."
