MINNEAPOLIS (NBA.com exclusive) -- The San Antonio Spurs made it look easy against the Minnesota Timberwolves, defeating them for the sixth straight time at the Target Center, 103-85, on Friday.
After coming of the bench for the last eight games, Richard Jefferson started and led the Spurs with 19 points and nine rebounds.
"I thought Richard was aggressive the entire game," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "And he rebounded. We want him to rebound. With that body and at that position, he should do that quite often. So we were pleased that he got nine rebounds and that he was aggressive offensively. That's what we are looking for."
San Antonio has now won six of its last seven games while Minnesota has dropped eight in a row and 14 of 15.
In recent games, teams have appeared to take substantial 'breaks' against Minnesota. On Wednesday night, Denver sleep-walked through the first two-and-a-half quarters, only to turn a eight-point deficit into a 16-point lead in less than a quarter.
On Friday night, San Antonio didn't wait that long. After a lackadaisical quarter-and-a-half and trailing by six, San Antonio exploded for a 34-10 run. They eventually built a 20-point lead, allowing them to give some of their starters a short night. In particular, DeJuan Blair was the beneficiary of the minutes normally reserved for Tim Duncan.
"It was great to get a short night," Duncan said. "We got [a game] tomorrow and it's good to get a win like this and go back home and gear it up to go again tomorrow."
San Antonio has had to do without standout point guard Tony Parker, sidelined by a fractured hand, for the last two games. In his absence, George Hill has stepped into his shoes and take over leadership of the team.
"He's got the ability to do it," Duncan said. "He just needs the confidence to do it. And obviously he's getting that now from [Coach Popovich]. We're confident in what he can do and with Tony out, we're going to need him to do well. So the ball's in his court, pun intended, and we'll see what happens."
In typical fashion, however, Coach Popovich kept the bar high for his young point guard.
"I want him to be more aggressive," he said. "I want him to take more control, I want him to be telling people where the [heck] to go on the court, I want him to tell me where the [heck] to go, and I want him to start taking over."
Rookie Wayne Ellington led Minnesota in scoring for the second time this year, notching 17 points off the bench. Minnesota's Al Jefferson was held to 13 points as Minnesota was forced to play without Kevin Love, who is day-to-day with a mid-foot sprain.
