BOSTON (NBA.com exclusive) -- It's the Indiana Pacers.
That's the operative sentiment when it comes to the Boston Celtics' 122-103 no-doubt blowout over the Indiana Pacers. For most contenders suffering from minor slip ups, a dominant win over any team can be considered the one that puts them back on track.
But the Celtics are more than two months off the preferred trail. And with the Cleveland Cavaliers looming Sunday afternoon, Friday's win can only be taken at face value. After all, the Celtics have had too many wins to use as launching pads for a victory over the Pacers -- as good a matchup for them as there is -- to mean much at all.
"One game doesn't fix anything," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "But it's good that they know what they can do."
It does, however, erase the foul stench left by the wake of Boston's decimation at the hands of the Memphis Grizzlies Wednesday.
"It really left a bad taste in our mouth, " Paul Pierce said.
"We are playing a wounded tiger," Pacers coach Jim O'Brien said. "They came out and pounded us and we never recovered from that."
The Celtics avoided their third consecutive loss, and they did so by halftime, thanks in large part to their bench. While the combined bench scoring total of 54 points is inflated by vast amount of garbage time, the subs had almost half that total by the 7:42 mark of the second quarter.
At that juncture, Nate Robinson had just hit three consecutive threes -- four total -- and put up 12 points, his first foray into double digits in four games. Moreover, he displayed the skills that separate him from Eddie House, who was traded to the New York Knicks for Robinson in late February. Robinson has filled in just fine as a catch-and-shoot replacement for House, but three of those early triples were unassisted shots.
"When Nate and the second unit, when they play like that, the tone of the game changes," Rivers said. "We've just got to keep him aggressive. He tends to not be at times, and that was one of the things the coaches in New York said - that you'd be surprised when you look at him, you think he's this ball of energy. And he pulls himself back."
In creating three of his five field goals out of basically nothing, Robinson was what the Celtics brought him in to be -- in Pierce's words, a firecracker.
One the bench handed the reins back to the starters in the second, the Celtics didn't waste much time in laying down an 11-4 run that would lead to a 20-point halftime lead, and, for all intents and purposes, the victory.
With regards afforded the Pacers' league average defense -- in points allowed per 100 possessions -- the Celtics had a litany of bounce-back offensive performances. Rajon Rondo shredded the open lanes early, with 10 points and three assists through his first-quarter shift. Kendrick Perkins, who was shooting 53 percent in March -- low for the league-leader in field-goal percentage at 60.9 percent -- kept the ball high and finished strong on his way to 10 points and seven boards in 23 minutes.
"They have too many weapons for us," O'Brien said.
Most encouraging of all was Pierce scoring 20 points, his second 20-point game since February 1st and his fourth straight game in double digits.
"Before the last two games, I had made the comment to [trainer] Eddie Lacerte, I said, 'Boy, Paul's starting to get pop back,'" Rivers said. "And then these last two games before this happened, you're like, 'Whoa, wait a minute. Maybe I'm wrong.'
"And then he had it again tonight."
The Celtics had it too. But they've had it before, against playoffs teams and ping-pong watchers. There's no fooling this time.
