NEW ORLEANS (NBA.com exclusive) -- Obviously the Denver Nuggets' Carmelo Anthony was paying attention in the huddle before the start of the fourth quarter as assistant coach Adrian Dantley preached a simple message.
"It's winning time," Anthony said Dantley told the team.
Six of Anthony's game-high 32 points turned a touch-and-go game into an eventual 102-95 Nuggets win over the New Orleans Hornets on Friday night at the New Orleans Arena. It's the second straight win without Nuggets coach George Karl on the bench and fifth consecutive victory overall.
With several lead changes and never a wide margin on either end, Anthony put it together just when the Nuggets needed to make a run.
Anthony hit a layup with 5:32 left to give the Nuggets an 88-86 lead, forcing the Hornets to call a timeout. Anthony then hit a jumper and a layup on back-to-back possessions to push Denver up 94-88 with 3:45 remaining. The Hornets had no answer for the late.
Though Anthony hit the shots that shoved Denver ahead of New Orleans for good, Anthony said his openings increased as Chauncey Billups' output increased as Billups piled up 21 in the win.
"I was just trying to take what they were giving me," Anthony said. "With Chauncey out there, it's kind of hard for them to double [team] the way that they normally would," Anthony said. "I just tried to take advantage. They made some adjustments to my post-ups.
"They were coming on the pass and was trying to make me see two or three people at one time. Just getting the ball to the middle of the court where I wanted it helped me out. We came out, hit a couple of shots, made a couple of stops and it seemed like we were able to open it up from there. We never looked back."
Though Anthony shot 13-for-27 from the floor, he heated up during the fourth, making five of seven shots.
"They did a good job of jumping and fronting him, showing him different looks on the defensive end," Dantley said, who will fill in for Karl through the rest of the road trip as Karl receives treatment for throat and neck cancer. "But he figured it out and hit some big shots. He battled and struggled a little bit. But he hung in there, then he hit some key shots when we needed them."
The last time the Nuggets came to New Orleans, Anthony struggled as Billups missed that game with an injury. Hornets coach Jeff Bower recognized the difference with Billups and Anthony both in the lineup.
"Without a doubt we had a tough day against some of the two best scorers in the league," Bower said. "I tried to get some of us in to move them around but it was still hard for us to go against them."
Anthony also came up with 12 rebounds to go along with Nene's 12 boards and Johan Petro's 10 rebounds. Anthony said he became more active on the rebounding front because of Kenyon Martin's absence from the lineup with a knee injury. Nene scored 17 while Petro added 10 to give the Nuggets three players in double figures.
The Hornets received point production from their usual suspects.
David West led the way with 30. Rookies Marcus Thornton had 23 off the bench and Darren Collison went for 17 and 10 assists.
The Hornets were severely undermanned, dressing just eight players as Chris Paul, Peja Stojakovic, James Posey and Sean Marks all missed the game.
"I think we made a couple mistakes down the stretch offensively, then a couple of times on the defensive end," West said. "We had the rebound and then we gave it right back to Chauncey. We just gave them a couple of extra possessions we didn't need to give."
