Raptors-Kings Preview

With an Eastern Conference playoff berth in danger of slipping away, the Toronto Raptors are hoping Chris Bosh continues to recover quickly from his recent seven-game absence.

Perhaps facing the Sacramento Kings will help the All-Star forward return to form.

Bosh seeks his second excellent performance against the Kings this season Wednesday night, when the visiting Raptors try to bounce back from a demoralizing loss and avoid their seventh defeat in eight games.

The Raptors (32-30) had won 18 of 25 before Bosh sprained his left ankle. They went 3-4 in his absence, with the wins coming at the expense of three struggling clubs - New Jersey, Washington and New York. Toronto has also dropped both games since Bosh's return, including a heartbreaking 109-107 defeat to the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night to open a four-game Western road trip.

Bosh hit a rare 3-pointer - his eighth of the season and second of the contest - to tie the game with 10 seconds remaining, but Lakers star Kobe Bryant answered, draining a game-winning 17-foot fallaway jumper with 1.9 seconds left.

"It's always tough bouncing back (from injury), but I just wanted to get a feel, and I didn't want to force anything," said Bosh, who finished with a team-best 22 points.

The Raptors remained sixth in the East after the loss, but are only 1 1/2 games ahead of ninth-place Chicago. As recently as Feb. 20, Toronto had a 4 1/2-game cushion for a playoff spot.

Bosh, who had 12 points and 12 rebounds Sunday in a 114-101 home loss to Philadelphia, enters this contest averaging career highs in points (24.3), rebounds (11.3) and field-goal percentage (52.3).

He helped those averages by scoring 36 points, shooting 14 of 18 and grabbing 11 rebounds in a 115-104 home win over Sacramento on Feb. 7. Andrea Bargnani added 22 points in the Raptors' third straight win over the Kings.

That defeat is part of an 8-29 stretch since Dec. 22 for Sacramento (21-43), including a 5-12 mark at Arco Arena in that span. The Kings will seek to improve upon that as they open the first of two five-game homestands over the season's final two months.

The Kings will also look to avoid a fourth straight loss after falling 88-81 in Portland on Tuesday night. Sacramento erased an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter, but got outscored 14-7 the rest of the way.

"Another game for us against a really good team where we had a chance to win in the last few minutes and came away dry,"coach Paul Westphal said.

Tyreke Evans scored 18 points to lead the Kings while Carl Landry added 17. Landry, whom the Kings acquired from Houston 11 days after last month's matchup with the Raptors, has totaled 47 points while shooting 17 for 22 from the field in his last two games versus Toronto.

Evans owns the night, gets 1st triple-double in Kings' win

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (NBA.com exclusive) -- The small-market Kings held an overstated "Rally For Reke" night to promote Tyreke Evans for the league's Rookie Of The Year Award on Wednesday night.

As it turns out, the exaggerated promotion may have been deserved.

The 20-year-old guard recorded his first triple-double as the Sacramento Kings rolled 113-90 over the visiting Toronto Raptors. Evans scored 19 points with 10 assists and 10 rebounds.

"It was a treat for the fans to honor Tyreke that way and have him go out and get his first triple-double. There's going to be a lot of them," Kings coach Paul Westphal said. "It was really exciting for Tyreke to have such a fitting night."

Sacramento fans were given white t-shirts with "REKE ROY" across the front and cardboard Evans' faces on a stick. The rally included video tributes with testimonials from NBA All-Stars and even an on-court endorsement from Sacramento mayor and former NBA star Kevin Johnson.

When asked, Evans said it was a bit embarrassing but he had fun looking up at his many faces in the crowd.

"It reminded me of college back at Memphis, it was a college atmosphere out there," Evans said. "I had fun with it."

The 6-foot-6 guard entered the night averaging 20.3 points, 5.4 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game and is the frontrunner for the rookie award.

In the pregame huddle after all the Evans hoopla, Kings forward Carl Landry let out a quip to the team: "Now introducing ... Michaaaaeeeel Jordan."

The crowd chanted R-O-Y at the direction of an in-game emcee coming back from a timeout after Evans scored on a baseline floater over the backboard in the second quarter. The chant didn't catch on right away, but fans did continue the chant without direction at times in the second half.

"They chanted it every five seconds, I just started laughing," Evans said. "The other team was like, 'you got that rookie of the year.' They were playing around because they'd never seen anything like that for a rookie."

Evans said that Westphal wanted him to get the triple-double, telling him to find people because he only had limited time before he was going to take him out of the game. After the game, Westphal made a clear case for Evans as the guy to win the award.

"He's really taking steps to change the culture of his team," Westphal said. "His consistency and his obvious talent makes it an open and close vote. I don't see how anyone else can get a vote when you look at the totality of the season. For this year, it's just not even close. He's one of the most consistent rookies I've ever seen."

The last rookie in the franchise to record a triple-double was Norm Van Lier who accomplished the feat in 1969 for the Cincinnati Royals.

Though the night may have been Evans' rookie rally, it was Kings veteran guard Beno Udrih who led the Kings' second-half rally. Udrih finished with a game-high 24 points and tallied eight assists.

In the first half, the Raptors found easy buckets on open cuts in the lane, scoring 32 of their 45 first half points in the paint. The Raptors led 45-40 at halftime.

But the Kings dominated the second half, opening the third quarter on a 10-0 run. Udrih scored nine of his points and five of his assists in the third quarter alone.

Sacramento shot 75 percent (18-of-24) in the quarter. It was the most points they've scored in a quarter since December 2008. The Kings led the Raptors 83-68 after the third quarter explosion. The Kings led by as many as 26 points late in the fourth quarter.

Evans is happy to share the ball with his backcourt mate, Udrih.

"We both play together, we don't cry for the ball or anything like that," Evans said. "If you're having a good night you're having a good night."

It was the eighth consecutive start for Udrih, who worked as a reserve for the Kings before the trade of former Kings guard Kevin Martin to Houston. Udrih has now scored in double-digits for six straight games.

Udrih didn't cite his offense after the game though, crediting to defense as the reason why the Kings were successful.

"We played good defense on Bosh and the Raptors," Udrih said. "We definitely came out and played defense and that is why we won."

After being victimized by Kobe Bryant's last-second shot the previous night, the Raptors have now lost seven of their last eight games and are now tied for the No. 6 spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs with Charlotte.

Raptors forward Andrew Bargnani led Toronto with 20 points and six rebounds. Chris Bosh struggled on 6-of-20 from the field for 14 points.
