Nets-Mavericks Preview

Even with a shortened bench, the Dallas Mavericks keep getting quality efforts from their rotation. It could be even thinner Wednesday night, but there's little reason to think they won't keep winning.

The Mavericks go for their 13th straight victory while extending the woeful New Jersey Nets' decade-long losing streak in Dallas.

With Jason Terry (facial surgery), Brendan Haywood (back) and Erick Dampier (dislocated finger) sidelined, the Mavericks (44-21) had only nine players available Monday in Minnesota but rolled to a 125-112 victory.

"It's been a true team," coach Rick Carlisle said. "Somebody's down a little, somebody else picks him up. ... When you get on a roll like this, those kinds of things have got to happen."

With Terry not expected to return until later this month, J.J. Barea has seen increased minutes in the Dallas backcourt. However, the point guard left Monday's game with an ankle injury and was taken for X-rays, though he told the team's official Web site he thinks his foot is sprained and not broken.

"Let's hope so," Dirk Nowitzki said. "It's time we started getting everybody healthy."

Shawn Marion, whose previous season high was 18 points, scored 29 and grabbed 14 rebounds as Dallas extended the league's longest active winning streak and the franchise's best since a 17-0 stretch from Jan. 27-March 11, 2007.

With Haywood out the last two games and Dampier injured for the last 12, the Mavericks have been successful using a zone defense to match up with bigger opponents. Nowitzki, though, does not see this as a long-term solution.

"Small ball is just not going to win against the big boys," said Nowitzki, seven points shy of passing George Gervin (20,708) for 30th all-time.

Even if both centers aren't available for the beginning of a four-game homestand, Nowitzki and the Mavericks might not have to worry about what style of play they use against the Nets (7-56), who have lost nine straight in Dallas since March 2, 2000. Most of those matchups were blowouts, with the Mavs winning by an average of 15.6 points.

New Jersey - one of the league's worst rebounding teams with 39.2 per game - was outrebounded 42-28 by Dallas in a 117-101 defeat Dec. 2.

Nowitzki scored 24 points and former Nets guard Jason Kidd had 16 points, 10 assists and eight boards, helping the Mavericks shoot 81 percent while building a 77-50 halftime lead.

Getting behind early has been a disturbing trend for the Nets, who need three wins in their final 19 games to avoid matching the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers for the NBA's worst all-time record. New Jersey has been outscored in the first quarter by an average of 12.3 points in its last four games.

"We definitely don't like to give teams head starts the way we've been doing," Devin Harris said after scoring 28 points in Monday's 107-101 loss at Memphis. "Once we correct that, it will be easier to contend in that fourth quarter, instead of coming back from big deficits."

Since the Mavs dealt him to New Jersey in the Kidd trade two years ago, Harris has gone 8 of 30 from the field while averaging 13.5 points in two trips back to Dallas.

Courtney Lee is averaging 27.5 points in the first two games of New Jersey's five-game trip after scoring a career-high 30 on Monday.

The Nets will try for a third consecutive season series split with Dallas, but they are 1-22 against the Western Conference this season.

Mavs take control after slow start, win 13th straight game

DALLAS (NBA.com exclusive) -- For the first half of Wednesday's game, it wasn't always easy to tell which team was trying to match the NBA's longest winning streak of the season and which was trying to avoid becoming the biggest loser of all time.

Then came the second half, when the Mavericks turned back into the league's hottest team, the Nets turned back into the Nets and all was once again right with the basketball universe.

Dallas overcame an 18-point first-half deficit to defeat New Jersey 96-87 for its 13th consecutive victory. That equals Cleveland's run from Jan. 10-Feb. 11 as the longest in the NBA this season. It also ties the third-longest streak in franchise history, trailing only a 14-game streak in 2002 and a 17-gamer in 2007.

The Nets shot just 31 percent (14-for-45) during a second-half collapse and lost for the 10th straight time in Dallas, a decade of defeats that dates back to March 2, 2000. New Jersey has dropped nine of its last 11 games and still needs to win three of its 18 remaining games to avoid matching the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers (9-73) for the NBA's worst all-time record.

The Nets are just 1-23 against the Western Conference this year and were jumbo-sized underdogs against a team that hasn't lost at home since Feb. 5 and hasn't lost at all since Feb. 16.

New Jersey came out firing, however, hitting eight straight shots to seize a 17-3 lead. The Nets were 14-for-21 in the quarter and opened up a 33-19 advantage, including 11 points from former Maverick Devin Harris and 10 from Brook Lopez.

The Nets took their biggest lead at 41-23 on a dunk by Terrence Williams at the 8:09 mark, but the Mavs responded with a 16-6 surge to end the quarter. Dallas shot just 36 percent in the half and trailed 47-39 at intermission.

New Jersey crashed hard in the third quarter, missing nine of its first 10 shots as the Mavericks stormed in front with a 20-5 run. Jason Kidd capped the run with one of his five 3-pointers, extending his streak to 30 consecutive games with at least one 3-point field goal and giving Dallas a 59-54 lead it would never relinquish.

"We finally kind of woke up and started playing some defense," Kidd said.

The Nets were just 5-for-26 from the field in the third quarter and were outscored 31-15. Dallas converted many of the missed shots into easy baskets, posting an 11-0 advantage in fast break points in the period.

"Our defensive disposition was stronger, we were more physical and we were more alert [in the third quarter]," Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle said.

The Mavericks grabbed their biggest lead at 81-69 on another 3-pointer by Kidd with 9:46 remaining in the game, but the Nets scored 11 unanswered points to get within one. That's when Caron Butler came through down the stretch for Dallas, scoring 10 of its last 15 points to close out the victory and keep the streak alive.

Dallas leads the league with 17 victories this season in games where it trailed by 10 or more points. The Mavericks also improved to 17-16 when trailing at halftime.

The Mavericks survived an off night from leading scorer Dirk Nowitzki, who was 3-for-16 and finished with 12 points, five rebounds and five turnovers. He averaged 28.1 points and 7.5 boards during the first 12 wins in the streak. Nowitzki did pass George Gervin (20,708) for 30th place on the NBA's all-time scoring list with 20,714 points.

"There's no defense to stop Dirk. Either he's going to make shots or miss shots, but I thought we at least made him take tough shots," Nets head coach Kiki Vandeweghe said. "[Kris] Humphries did a very good job. Josh Boone did a good job -- everybody who guarded him. But it's not just one guy. You've got to guard him with three or four guys."

Kidd led six Dallas players in double figures with 20 points, nine assists and four steals. Butler added 18 and rookie Roddy Beaubois had 16 off the bench. Shawn Marion (14 points, 13 rebounds) and Brendan Haywood (11 points, 10 rebounds) had double-doubles. Haywood returned after missing two games with lower back tightness. Erick Dampier played four minutes after missing 12 games with a dislocated right middle finger.

Six New Jersey players also reached double figures, led by Harris with 21 points, seven assists and six turnovers. Lopez, who sat much of the fourth quarter after picking up his fifth foul late in the third, did not score after the first quarter, missing his last 10 shots. Williams had 18 points and a season-high 13 rebounds off the bench.

"Shots stopped falling," Lopez said. "They were sending a few more guys at me personally."
