Mavericks-Timberwolves Preview

Playing their third game in four nights, the injury-plagued Dallas Mavericks could use a trouble-free matchup. Facing the lowly Minnesota Timberwolves could be exactly what the Southwest Division leaders need.

Dallas will try to win its 12th straight overall and eighth in a row at Minnesota on Monday night, when the Timberwolves get one of their best players back from suspension.

With the NBA's longest active win streak, the Mavericks (43-21) have built a five-game division lead over San Antonio and are in close pursuit of the Western Conference-leading Lakers.

Dallas, though, is trying to get healthy for the stretch run. Jason Terry, one of the league's best off the bench with 16.4 points per game, had facial surgery Friday and could be out another two weeks after getting elbowed in the face by Minnesota's Corey Brewer in Wednesday's 112-109 home win.

The Mavericks could also be without both of their centers Monday in the final meeting this season with the Timberwolves (14-49). Erick Dampier has been sidelined the last 11 games with a dislocated right middle finger, while Brendan Haywood missed the final three quarters of Friday's win over Sacramento and a 122-116 victory at Chicago on Saturday with lower back tightness.

"The biggest thing is for us to get healthy," Jason Kidd said Saturday after handing out 15 assists and grabbing 11 rebounds. "We won short-handed tonight, but that just shows how deep we are. Everybody is focused on one thing and that's winning."

Kidd, who sat out Wednesday with the Mavericks playing their 10th game in 16 days, will likely be in the starting lineup Monday when the Mavericks look to extend their longest winning streak since a 17-game run Jan. 27-March 11, 2007.

Dallas has won seven straight at the Target Center since a 91-78 loss Jan. 4, 2006.

In the teams' last meeting in Minneapolis, Dirk Nowitzki scored 20 points with 11 rebounds and Dallas won 89-77 on Nov. 13, holding the Timberwolves to a season-low 32.6 percent shooting.

Minnesota's leading scorer Al Jefferson missed that game following the death of his grandmother and did not play in Wednesday's loss in Dallas, serving the first of a two-game suspension for his arrest last Sunday on suspicion of DWI.

Ryan Hollins has played well starting at forward the last two games - averaging 14.5 points and 6.0 boards - but Timberwolves second-year forward Kevin Love said the team could have benefited from having Jefferson in the lineup Saturday, when Minnesota was outrebounded by nine in a 112-98 loss to Houston.

With Jefferson expected to return, the Timberwolves will try to snap a five-game home losing streak and go for just their second victory overall since Feb. 6.

Dallas will look to match a season high with its fifth straight road win. Another strong effort from rookie guard Rodrigue Beaubois could help the Mavericks achieve that. The 22-year-old from Guadeloupe has set or tied a career high in scoring in each of the last three games.

"He's a talent,'' Kidd said after Beaubois scored 18 of his 24 in the third quarter Saturday. "He's going to be a special player in this league."

Beaubois hit a season-high four 3s and scored 17 in a 117-108 loss to Minnesota on Feb. 5 when the Timberwolves snapped a 13-game slide to the Mavericks.

Marion's big night leads Mavs to 12th straight win

MINNEAPOLIS (NBA.com exclusive) -- It's not that Shawn Marion forgot how to score. He's just been busy doing other things.

"He's really sacrificed so much of his game this year to be one of the best defenders, to get rebounds, to be a help defender, to be a screener," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said after the Mavericks extended their winning streak to 12 straight with a 125-112 victory over the Timberwolves. "Every week I tell him how important he is to us, how much, as a coach, I appreciate what he's done for us this year."

One thing he hasn't done is carry the Mavs' offense -- until they needed him. With Dallas playing without three members of its rotation and trying to cope with Dirk Nowitzki's early foul trouble, Marion rekindled memories of the unstoppable scorer from his Phoenix days. The 11-year veteran obliterated his previous season high (18 points) by erupting for 29 points to go with his game-high 14 rebounds.

"I'm really glad he had a big game," Carlisle said. "It's good for him. He's the guy who has made the biggest adjustment of any of our guys, and it's showing up in wins and losses."

A dozen straight wins, matter of fact, the Mavs' longest winning streak since 2006. But particularly gratifying for Dallas was how the streak was extended, considering that Brendan Haywood was sidelined by a sore back, Erick Dampier by an injured finger, and Jason Terry by facial surgery. The absence of Dampier and Haywood forced Dallas to play a small lineup for long stretches -- the Mavs defaulted into a zone defense much of the time, hoping to contain Wolves scoring machine Al Jefferson by collapsing around him -- and the tactic mostly worked.

Yes, Jefferson became the first Timberwolf to surpass 30 points this season by pounding his way to the basket for 36 points, and yes, point guard Ramon Sessions exploited the seams of the zone to get to the basket for five layups. But the rest of the Wolves combined to make just 35.4 percent of their shots over the zone, dooming Minnesota to its sixth straight loss and 12th in its last 13 games.

"It hurts us now that our big guys are out, but the zone has been effective for us. We're so small in there, but we can pack in the zone and try to rebound out of it," said Nowitzki, who collected 24 points despite being limited by foul trouble to fewer than 30 minutes for just the fourth time this season. "It's been fun to watch, but we definitely need our big guys back for defense. In the long run, that's not going to cut it. Smallball is just not going to win against the big boys."

The Wolves, who haven't won at the Target Center in more than a month, are definitely not the big boys, not when they commit 26 turnovers -- a shocking number of them self-inflicted. At one point during the first half, Minnesota had committed 15 turnovers to Dallas' one, basically negating the Wolves' unusually strong start. The Wolves opened a 19-9 lead and forced Nowitzki to the bench with two quick fouls, but then fumbled the ball away six times during Dallas' furious 15-0 comeback. The Mavs led 34-27 at the end of the first quarter, "which was really a spiritual boost for us," Carlisle said.

The rest of the game went much the same way, with Caron Butler scoring from outside (he finished with 23 points), Marion getting to the basket inside, and the Wolves making mistake after mistake. Minnesota tried to fight back -- center Ryan Hollins was even ejected for swiping at Dirk Nowitzki's head after losing a rebound, an offense judged flagrant by the officials. "Ryan was a little out of control," shrugged Nowitzki.

But Minnesota committed at least five infractions in every quarter, forestalling any chance of a comeback. The Wolves pulled within 10 points with 4:52 to play, but never got any closer. "When the (points-off-turnovers) differential is minus-24, you're staring at a hole that's just too big to dig yourself out of," Minnesota coach Kurt Rambis said.

Jefferson, in his first game back from a two-game suspension for a drunken-driving arrest, certainly tried. Despite frequently being swallowed up by triple coverage when he received the ball down low, the Wolves' scoring leader piled up 11 points before the game was six minutes old, as though hoping they could make up for his absence from Minnesota's three-point loss last week in Dallas.

"I feel like I let my teammates down" by being suspended, Jefferson said. "I was real anxious to get back. I got my confidence back and I know what I'm able to do."

So does Marion, even though he hasn't had to show it much for the Mavs this season.

"Anybody can get shots in this league. That's not what I'm about. All I want to do is win," said Marion, who topped his previous season-best in points by 11. "I've done a lot of things in this league, but I want to win a championship. I want to leave a legacy, and you've got to make sacrifices to succeed. So that's what I'm willing to do."

Jose Juan Barea set a new season high with nine assists, but left the game in the fourth quarter after turning his left ankle. He was taken for x-rays after the game, but said he believed his foot was merely sprained, not broken.

"Let's hope so," Nowitzki said. "It's time we started getting everybody healthy."
