Nets-Knicks Preview

The highly anticipated summer of 2010 is on its way, but for now the only competition between the New York Knicks and the New Jersey Nets is determining who's currently playing worse.

Though it's the Nets hoping to avoid infamy over the NBA's final month, the Knicks have also struggled mightily heading into Saturday night's meeting at Madison Square Garden.

New Jersey (6-55) and New York have set themselves up to be major players this summer, when names such as LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh could be available as free agents.

The Nets will have more than $23 million in salary cap space to play with and the Knicks should have nearly $32 million, but neither team has given any potential superstar much of an on-court incentive to move to the New York metropolitan area.

New Jersey needs four wins in its final 23 games to avoid matching the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers for worst record in league history, while the Knicks (21-40) haven't been faring any better recently. New York's 102-96 loss at Toronto on Friday was its 11th in 13 games and its 20th in 26.

The Raptors, who were without Bosh after he was hospitalized with severe stomach pains, became the fifth team in six games to shoot better than 50 percent against the Knicks.

"No matter what quarter we didn't play well in, with Bosh not playing, this is a game we should have won," said David Lee, who had 23 points and 18 rebounds.

New York held 16 of 21 opponents under 100 points from Dec. 6-Jan. 18, but digging in defensively has become an afterthought lately. The Knicks have allowed an NBA-worst 112.2 points per game since Feb. 5.

"I just didn't think we had the necessary gumption to get up on them and guard a little man-to-man and stop it,'' coach Mike D'Antoni said. "We couldn't do it. They scored every time.''

New Jersey has only allowed 98.6 points per game in that same stretch, but as has been the case all season, the offense hasn't been there to push it over the top. The Nets' 97-87 loss to Orlando on Friday marked the 30th time they've failed to score 90.

After visiting the Knicks, seven of New Jersey's next eight games are against opponents that are .500 or better. Yet, point guard Devin Harris insists the season isn't over.

"From the outside (perspective), that's probably true," he told the NBA's official Web site. "But we want to finish strong. Obviously we have our minds set on trying to compete each and every game and trying to win every game."

One of New Jersey's few wins came against the Knicks, 104-95 on Dec. 30 at the Izod Center. Yi Jianlian scored 22 points while Brook Lopez had 21 points and 14 rebounds.

Chris Douglas-Roberts will likely start again Saturday if Courtney Lee (sprained ankle) misses a fourth straight game, and he's certainly enjoyed facing the Knicks. The second-year guard has averaged 19.8 points in five career games versus New York - 12.4 higher than his average against the league's other 28 teams.

Al Harrington has averaged 25.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in his last two games against New Jersey.

Nets rout Knicks for seventh win of the season

NEW YORK (NBA.com exclusive) -- With about five minutes left in the Nets' 113-93 victory Saturday over the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, a fan wearing a No. 6 LeBron James Knicks' jersey stood up and made a boisterous announcement to the fans behind him.

"We want LeBron. Let's go. We want LeBron," he shouted.

After this latest performance by the Knicks, landing James via free agency this summer is about all their fans have to look forward to.

The Nets (7- 55) won for just the seventh time all season. The Knicks (21-41), losers of 12 of their last 14 games, joined Charlotte as an ignominious pairing of teams that has lost twice to New Jersey this season.

New Jersey needs three wins in its final 20 games to avoid matching the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers for the worst record in league history.

"I don't know about shocking, but it's bad," said Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni, whose team went 0-for-18 from beyond the arc. "It's about as bad as it can get."

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the 18 missed 3-pointers sets an NBA record for most attempts without a make.

Nets coach Kiki Vandeweghe had a different take.

"I wish we could do this all the time," he said.

Devin Harris scored a game-high 31 points for New Jersey, making 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Courtney Lee, starting in place of Chris Douglas-Roberts (sprained ankle), added 25 points and Brook Lopez had 18 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. Yi Jianlian sprained his ankle in the first quarter, but X-rays were negative.

David Lee led New York with 23 points, Wilson Chandler added 20 points and 10 rebounds and Danilo Gallinari scored 15.

Playing the second night of a back-to-back on his surgically repaired knee, Tracy McGrady managed just two points on 1-of-6 shooting, while adding seven assists.

Yet those numbers don't being to explain the Knicks' futility.

While New York failed to make a single 3-point basket, they allowed the Nets to shoot 14-for-24 from beyond the arc. Harris and Lee combined to make 9-of-14 from long distance.

"They came in and played well," McGrady said. "They hit 14 threes and we were 0-for-18. That was the difference in the game."

After taking a 32-22 lead after one quarter, the Knicks were outscored 91-61 the rest of the way.

"Our defense was good at first, and then it just went downhill," D'Antoni said.

"They did a good job with coming out, being at home and attacking first," Courtney Lee said. "They hit us with the first punch, but we showed poise and character and continued to focus on defense and making good plays as a team."

Trailing by nine points, 83-74, entering the fourth quarter, the Knicks were outscored 30-19 in the final 12 minutes.

"We have to play urgently and try to win as many games as we can," said Gallinari, who, along with Al Harrington, battled foul trouble all night. "We cannot come out and lose against New Jersey. They have the worst record in the league, especially at home. We have to play aggressive every game."

Seven of New Jersey's next eight games are against opponents that are .500 or better, but Vandeweghe said his team can't afford to focus too much on flirting with the 76ers' historic losing record.

"Considering somebody asks me about that every day, of course you think about it," he said. "But what you to try and focus on is you take each day as it comes. Right now we can try and take something from tonight's game. And that's really the only way to look at it if you're having a very good year or whether you're having a struggle year. And there's no question that this is a difficult, day-to-day year, very difficult."

Both teams are clearly looking ahead to this summer, when LeBron, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh hit the free-agent market.

The Nets will have roughly $23 million in salary cap space and the Knicks will have more than $30 million.

Still, neither team has done much to inspire the big-name free agents to want to come to either place.

"We gotta do a better job," "D'Antoni said. "We got to somehow get these guys together and play well and get the year over with and then go on to other things. It's tough for everybody right now. Obviously, we don't have the answer now, but we'll keep looking for it."
