Magic-Nets Preview

Before hosting the defending NBA champions in a second rematch of last summer's playoff finals series and a potential preview for this year's, the Orlando Magic get what should be another easy tuneup.

The Magic look to win their fourth straight Friday when they visit the New Jersey Nets, seeking their third victory in as many games against the league's worst team.

Orlando (42-20) has a two-game lead over Atlanta in the Southeast Division for the second seed in the Eastern Conference. While that race is tight, the outcomes of its recent contests haven't been nearly as close.

In the last week, the Magic have posted wins over Miami, Philadelphia and Golden State by an average of 21.3 points. They are coming off a 117-90 victory against the Warriors on Wednesday. Dwight Howard led with 28 points and 12 rebounds, helping Orlando open a 30-point lead early in the second half.

"Our job is to get better going towards the playoffs and I think we're doing that," Howard said. "We're playing a lot better basketball on both ends. ... We're doing all the necessary things to get better."

The Magic, who split the six games before their winning streak, have averaged 121.5 points and shot 55.1 percent in their last two games. Howard, though, had scored 21 combined points on 5-of-14 shooting in the previous two games before making 11 of 17 against Golden State.

Orlando has had little trouble with New Jersey (6-54), holding the Nets to an average of 78.5 points in its two victories. Howard has averaged 23.0 points while shooting 72.0 percent in those games.

The Magic lost 98-92 to the Lakers in their other meeting Jan. 18.

Friday's game will be the second visit for Vince Carter to the Izod Center since he was traded by New Jersey to Orlando in the offseason. He scored 16 points in 15 minutes in the first, leaving with a sprained ankle. When the teams met most recently in Orlando on Nov. 13, Carter had 14 points in an 88-72 win.

"Regardless of the talent of the team or the record of the team, we have to take care of business," said Carter, who finished with 15 points in 22 minutes Wednesday.

Things have gotten much worse for New Jersey since Carter and the Magic's visit in October. The Nets, who have the NBA's worst record, have dropped their last two and six of seven after a 111-92 defeat to Cleveland on Wednesday.

Terrence Williams and Brook Lopez each scored 21 points as the Nets never recovered from a 20-point first-quarter deficit. Starter Courtney Lee, averaging 12.2 points, is doubtful for this game after missing the previous two with a sprained left ankle.

"When you fall behind 20 against the best team in the NBA, face it, it's going to be tough," Williams said. "We got it down to 11 a couple of times and couldn't get over the hump."

The Nets have lost a club-record 10 straight at home.

Magic steal the show with win over Nets

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (NBA.com exclusive) -- Earlier in the day, Newark, N.J. mayor Cory Booker announced that "Magic will happen in our city" when the Nets play at the Prudential Center for the next two seasons.

But at the IZOD Center on Friday night, the only Magic that came close to happening was from Orlando. Led by Matt Barnes' 16 points and 13 3-pointers by the team, the Magic breezed to a 97-87 win over New Jersey.

Despite the relatively easy win, Magic coach Stan Van Gundy was not pleased that his team didn't put New Jersey away after jumping out to a 14-point lead in the first quarter.

"All year, losing the lead is how we play," he said. "Give us a lead and we will play poorly at both ends of the floor. I have absolutely no idea how to fix it."

The Magic never actually came close to trailing after the first quarter. But Van Gundy's irritation served as fair warning that a better team might take advantage if the Magic take their foot off the pedal.

Van Gundy has been preaching that it's paramount his team maintains the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs over the final 19 games so it can avoid losing home-court advantage in the second round, should it advance. Ex-Net Vince Carter, who finished with 13 points, maintained the Magic did what it was supposed to do - win the game.

"We got lax a little bit, but we got the job done," Carter said. "(Van Gundy) was upset they were making a comeback, hitting their shots, but we were able to close out. That's all that matters."

Orlando has now won four straight, with an average margin of victory of 18.5 points in the stretch. With the win, the Magic (43-20) maintains a two-game lead over third-place Atlanta and Boston (both winners on Friday night).

As has been typical of most of their losses of late, the Nets found themselves down for the count early. They trailed 32-18 after the first quarter, with Barnes scoring 14, cut it to 50-43 at the half and never got any closer. Carter had nine points in the third quarter to put Orlando up 72-57. A Jason Williams' 3-pointer with 8:41 left in the game made it 81-66, although the Nets crept to within single-digits toward the end of the game.

Brook Lopez led the Nets with 18 points, while Devin Harris netted 17 on 7 of 21 shooting.

At a lowly 6-57, the Nets now embark on a five-game road trip that starts in nearby New York on Saturday and heads west to Memphis, Dallas, Oklahoma City and Houston. Harris was asked if it seems like the season is over with 21 games left.

"From the outside (perspective), that's probably true," Harris said. "But we want to finish strong. Obviously we have our minds set on trying to compete each and every game and trying to win every game."

On Friday, the Nets and New Jersey Devils hockey team announced it had reached an agreement with the city of Newark that will see the Nets playing at the Prudential Center the next two seasons, or as long as it takes for their permanent home in Brooklyn to be built.

Booker seemed to revel in the possibility of the Nets' changing their losing ways in what he called a new NBA city.

"Newark is America's No. 1 comeback city," he said. "We believe in the Nets and believe that they're going to have a comeback season in Newark next year."

Nets' starting guard Courtney Lee missed his third straight game with a sprained left ankle, despite claiming he was ready to return against the team that traded him for Carter last June.

"Anytime you play your old team, you want to get out there and play against them, show them they made a mistake, all that type of stuff," Nets coach Kiki Vandeweghe said. "That's what drives all competitive players.

"But what happens is, if you go out and you're limping, it won't necessarily make your ankle worse, but you have a much higher risk of hurting something else. You just have to wait until you can move relatively freely."
