There's a possibility the Orlando Magic and the Miami Heat could square off in a first-round playoff series that wouldn't be lacking for star power between Dwight Howard and Dwyane Wade.

If Wade isn't back in the lineup soon, though, the Heat may not wind up anything more than postseason spectators.

The Heat have beaten Orlando in both meetings this season, but a strained left calf is expected to keep Wade out of a fifth straight game Sunday when his team tries to avoid a fourth consecutive loss.

The Heat (29-30) were one-half game behind Toronto for the Eastern Conference's fifth seed on Jan. 29, but an inconsistent last month - and an injury to Wade - has them teetering on the edge of the playoff picture.

Miami followed a five-game losing streak from Jan. 30-Feb. 6 with a five-game winning streak, but it's dropped three in a row while Wade has been sidelined. After close losses to Dallas and Minnesota, the Heat shot 35.9 percent and totaled 26 second-half points Saturday in getting blown out 94-71 at home against Milwaukee.

"It's a huge gap with Dwyane out, but we've still got to go out and play hard,'' swingman Dorell Wright said after Miami fell into a tie for eighth in the East. "We didn't play as hard as Milwaukee did.''

Wade is listed as doubtful for Sunday, which should be a relief to Orlando (39-20) considering he's averaged 35.1 points in his last eight games against the Magic.

He's only averaged 24.5 points in the two meetings this season, but Michael Beasley helped lift Miami to a pair of wins by averaging 18.5 points and 10.0 rebounds.

Beasley, though, has averaged just 12.0 points while shooting 30.2 percent during the Heat's three-game slide.

"I feel like it's more my fault than anybody else's,'' Beasley said after shooting 5 of 14 against Milwaukee. "Maybe if I could have grabbed a couple more rebounds and knocked down a couple more shots, we could have gotten on a roll.''

Orlando has split six games after a 10-2 stretch, and like many of its losses, Stan Van Gundy came away fuming.

The coach had plenty of reasons to be upset after this one. The Magic led by as many as 18 in the third quarter Friday at New Orleans, but scored six points in the first 11 minutes of the fourth and lost 100-93.

Howard had 26 points and 10 boards, but Orlando shot 25.9 percent from 3-point range and turned it over 18 times.

"We looked for opportunities to relax, lose focus and let down, and we deserved to lose,'' Van Gundy said. "We've gotten to the point where Dwight can't merely be very good. He has to be absolutely dominant for us to win.

"It was awful basketball. Hopefully we learned something from it."

Howard certainly has been doing his part of late. Since the All-Star break, he's averaged 28.0 points, 15.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocks in five games.

Orlando is 19-5 when Howard scores more than 20 points.

The reigning Defensive Player of the Year hasn't been much of an offensive factor against Miami this season, averaging 14.5 points. Though he's grabbed 15.0 rebounds per game, the Heat won the battle of the boards in both meetings.

Rashard Lewis (12.3 ppg) and Vince Carter (11.7) haven't been chipping in much offensively over the last three games, but Jameer Nelson has averaged 18.0 points and 8.3 assists.

Nelson missed the first two meetings against Miami with a knee injury.

Magic turn down Heat with little help from Howard

ORLANDO (NBA.com exclusive) -- The stars did not shine here Sunday night.

Orlando's Dwight Howard put up only seven points and five rebounds, and Miami's Dwyane Wade went scoreless over the final 20 minutes of the Magic's 96-80 victory.

Howard was rendered unnecessary by a balanced Magic offense that included a game-high 22 points by Rashard Lewis and a defense that took Wade out of the game in the fourth quarter.

"Dwight isn't their whole team. He's a very good player but they have a lot of guys who do a lot of different things," said Wade, who led the Heat with 21 points in his first game back from a calf injury. "They made shots, and when this team is making shots, making threes, you tip your hat to 'em."

Howard, whose franchise record of 20 straight games with a double-double came to an end, might have been the third-best center in this particular game. Jermaine O'Neal kept Miami in the game with three straight baskets midway through the third quarter and finished with 16 points and six rebounds. And Marcin Gortat, Howard's backup, outscored and outrebounded the All-NBA center and also blocked three shots, one of them by Wade.

"We told Dwight afterwards that we certainly owed him," said Magic coach Stan Van Gundy. "He's been carrying us. He had a frustrating night tonight with calls and everything else, and virtually everyone else who played in the game played well and we were able to get a solid win.

"We needed to step up for him. He's been doing yeoman's work and we needed to step up and help him on a night where he was having a tough time."

The victory was the first of the season for the Magic (40-20) in three tries against the Heat (28-30). It was the 42nd game and probably the last between the intrastate rivals at Amway Arena, which will be replaced next season.

Miami has averaged only 82.5 points in four straight losses, the first three without Wade, who came back for 37 minutes against the Magic.

"It was probably too many," said Heat coach Erik Spoelstra. "I was planning on taking him out in the fourth (quarter) at some point when we were still within striking distance. He says he feels OK right now.

[The calf muscle] is still a little bit tight but tomorrow will actually be the test of it."

Seven of Wade's 17 points in the first half came from the free-throw line. He dunked for Miami's first points of the second half and made two free throws to pull the Heat with 57-52 with 8:53 left in the third quarter.

He didn't score again.

"When you're on the road, you want to stay within five points, and with four minutes left in the third quarter we were within five, and it went away really fast," Wade said. "It went up to a 12- or 14-point lead and that's what you can't have, especially on the road."

Lewis hit a 3-pointer and J.J. Redick made four free throws in a 9-0 Magic run that concluded the third quarter, and Redick set up a Gortat layup early in the fourth quarter to push Orlando's lead to 78-64.

Gortat finished with nine points and seven rebounds in 23 minutes.

"Marcin's been very good when we've needed him for bigger minutes," Van Gundy said.

Gortat was eager to help.

"Dwight had problems today, and coach gave me more playing time and I was really happy. I was waiting for this opportunity," he said. "I'm staying here to win a championship. I'm playing four or five minutes in a game but I'm not complaining. If coach wants me to play more, that's OK, too."
