Rockets-Jazz Preview

The Utah Jazz used a big second-half effort to knock off Houston less than two weeks ago, but the Rockets have undergone a major makeover since then.

It took until Houston's latest game to show it might be a good one.

Kevin Martin delivered his best performance in a Rockets uniform his last time out, and he'll look to lead visiting Houston to rare back-to-back wins on Saturday night as the Jazz try to avoid their third loss in four games.

Utah (37-21) got 41 combined points from Mehmet Okur and Paul Millsap to earn a come-from-behind 104-95 road win over the Rockets on Feb. 16 - the 13th victory in 14 games for Jerry Sloan's team.

That was part of a miserable stretch of six losses in seven games for Houston (29-28), with the last three coming after the blockbuster trade that saw Tracy McGrady and Carl Landry exit in a three-way trade that sent Martin to the Rockets.

Landry's instant energy was missed as Houston lost by an average of 12.0 points, and Martin struggled from outside, averaging 15.3 points but shooting 31.0 percent.

Martin was 9 of 24 Friday in his second start in place of the injured Trevor Ariza, but made all 14 free-throw attempts. He finished with 33 points, Aaron Brooks had 31 and Luis Scola added 30 points and 13 rebounds in a 109-104 win over San Antonio.

"The guys who have been here before him could finally make him comfortable and can find a way that he likes playing where he feels more effective and we need him scoring,'' Scola said. "That's the truth. So, if he feels comfortable, everything else will be easier for us.''

Martin, who averaged 28.3 points in his last six games against Utah while with Sacramento, saw plenty of progress.

"It's getting there,'' Martin said. "... Over time, you get better and more comfortable with the team. It's only four games and I just feel good to be here.''

The Jazz come having lost two of three after being unable to handle Martin's old team. Deron Williams was held to 10 points on 4 of 16 shooting - part of a 40.9 percent night for Utah - in a 103-99 loss to the Kings on Friday.

Sacramento, meanwhile, shot 54.5 percent. Atlanta shot 54.2 percent in knocking off the Jazz on Monday in Salt Lake City.

"Well, you have to make shots and we didn't shoot the ball very well,'' Sloan said. "They made it tough on us, kept us on the perimeter and we seemed to enjoy it out there."

Williams had 13 assists Friday - his eighth straight game in double digits - but his scoring has taken a hit lately as he's battled a bruised right quad and adjusted to playing without Ronnie Brewer, who was shipped to Memphis last week.

Williams has averaged 14.3 points on 31.1 percent shooting over his last four games. When Williams scores fewer than 20 points, the Jazz are just 16-13.

He's averaged 17.5 points in the two meetings against Houston this season, but shot 6 of 20 and fouled out as the Rockets cruised to a 113-96 win at EnergySolutions Arena on Nov. 2.

Carlos Boozer was just 1 of 6 and scored seven points in that loss, and he's been outplayed by Scola head to head. Boozer has averaged 9.5 points and 4.0 turnovers, while Scola has averaged 14.0 points and 10.5 rebounds.

Ariza (hip flexor) will sit again as Houston looks to win back-to-back games for just the third time since Jan. 1.

Jazz offense in tune in high-scoring rout of Rockets

SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- No, Jerry Sloan wasn't replaced by George Karl or Don Nelson for a night. It only seemed that way.

The Utah Jazz treated their game against the Houston Rockets on Saturday night like a track meet, something that's rarely been seen during Sloan's tenure with the Jazz. It certainly worked, as Utah set a few offensive season-highs, including one for points, in a 133-110 victory over the Rockets.

Deron Williams led Utah's breakneck pace, scoring 35 points on 13-for-17 shooting. He also had 13 assists and seven rebounds.

"I think it (pushing the pace) definitely benefited us," Williams said. "They're a team that likes to slow it down and get into a lot of sets and we were able to push the tempo a little bit and get out and run. We were having fun tonight."

The Jazz (38-21) were motivated after losing in Sacramento the previous night. Williams had a subpar game against the Kings, and he was in full-attack mode from the opening tip. The Rockets (29-29) didn't have anyone who could slow him down.

"He came out really looking to attack," Houston guard Kevin Martin said of Williams. "I was like 'you're feeling it tonight, huh' and he was like, 'you know, I just had a bad game last night,' and great players in this league, that's what they do."

Williams set a career-high for points in a quarter when he scored 20 in the first period against the Rockets. He intended to look for his shot a little more than usual to get into a rhythm.

"I've been a little passive to start games and that kind of hurts me because then it takes a while to get into a groove," Williams said. "I've passed up a lot of open shots, jumpers that I usually make. I told myself today I wasn't going to pass those up."

Williams scored 10 points on 4-for-16 shooting and had 13 assists against Sacramento on Friday.

"Last night he didn't play his best game," said Jazz forward Carlos Boozer, who had 18 points and eight rebounds. "Tonight he came back strong and started cooking. They didn't have a guy that could stay in front of him. He just kept taking it to them. When he can get by you, he's dangerous."

The Jazz followed Williams' lead. The pick-and-roll and methodical half-court sets were replaced by running-and-gunning for a night. They took shots early in the shot clock, ran after most Houston misses and took 25 3-pointers, which can sometimes be a sore spot with Sloan.

"I guess we need to shoot more threes," Sloan said to a laughing group of media members. "We shot the ball really well. I've always felt over the years in this business that you shoot much better the second night (of a back-to-back set) than the first night. I guess that's why we shot the ball so well."

The Jazz were deadly from just about everywhere in the half-court. Utah shot 67.5 percent against the Rockets, including 56 percent from 3-point range. The team's 52 made field goals was a season-high.

Utah's previous high for points this season was the 124 it scored against Phoenix on Jan. 25. The Jazz topped that total with 6:16 left in the game when Williams scored on a layup to give them a 125-100 lead.

The Jazz were explosive throughout the night. They made 12 of their first 13 shots. They didn't blow the game open early, however, because they were extremely sloppy with the ball. At one point in the first quarter, Utah was shooting 87.5 percent but was tied with Houston at 32-32 because it had committed a whopping nine turnovers.

Utah cleaned up its play while continuing to scorch the nets. The Jazz had just three total turnovers in the second and third periods, and it helped them build a 107-92 lead after three quarters.

"Just a very poor defensive effort," said Houston coach Rick Adelman. "I think they just took it to us. We weren't mentally tough enough to guard their cuts. They got it going."

The Jazz, who had season-highs in points in a half (70 in the first half) and made 3-pointers (14), also enjoyed success in the half-court. They dished 36 assists, and mostly took advantage of what the Rockets gave them.

On this night, the Rockets gave them the chance to get out and run and show they can win games in different ways.

"When we're scoring like that it shows we can play in a variety of ways," said Jazz forward Wesley Matthews, who had 18 points on 7-for-9 shooting. "I don't think we would have played like that if our shots weren't falling. We can do different types of styles and that's a testament to this team and their maturity and the talent level."
