Pistons-Warriors Preview

In a season of mostly sloppy play offensively, the Detroit Pistons have a rare opportunity to make themselves look good.

Stumbling following a fast start to a four-game road trip, the Pistons look to extend a five-game winning streak against the Golden State Warriors and their porous defense Saturday night.

Detroit (21-37) opened its trip with its best shooting game of the season, making 58.4 percent of its attempts in a 101-89 win over Sacramento on Tuesday night. The Pistons, though, lost 97-91 to the Los Angeles Clippers the following night and 107-102 to Denver on Friday.

Detroit has dropped four of six overall after winning four of its previous six. Though they shot 44.6 percent and committed 17 turnovers, the Pistons managed to top 100 points versus a Nuggets team that surrenders an average of 102.7.

It was the 10th time Detroit has reached triple digits this season.

The Pistons rank 29th in the league in scoring, averaging 92.5 points. Only league-worst New Jersey has a lower average (90.1).

"We need quality possessions," coach John Kuester said. "You've got to make sure you continually get good opportunities ... we have to fight through that."

Detroit is averaging 107.8 points during a five-game winning streak against Golden State (16-41), which is allowing an NBA-worst 111.0 points per game.

The Pistons have reached 100 in consecutive games that did not last past regulation only once this season, beating Denver 101-99 on Dec. 10 and Golden State 104-95 two days later.

Rodney Stuckey led Detroit in that matchup against the Warriors, posting 29 points and seven assists. Stuckey had 19 points Friday night after averaging 13.5 over his previous six contests.

Pistons guard Richard Hamilton, meanwhile, is enjoying his best scoring stretch of the season, averaging 27.2 points over his last six games, though he's shot 34.2 percent (13 for 38) in his last two.

Hamilton has missed 27 games due to various injuries, but Detroit is now relatively healthy. Golden State, meanwhile, continues to be one of the league's most injury-plagued teams.

Second-leading scorer Correy Maggette (hamstring) has missed the last three games and will be out at least another two weeks. Monta Ellis, averaging a career-best 25.7 points, has been playing with a sore back, shooting 32.9 percent in four games after missing his previous three.

C.J. Watson (flu-like symptoms) was held out of Golden State's 127-112 loss to Denver on Thursday night, and a team spokesman indicated the third-year guard might also be suffering from appendicitis. His status is uncertain.

Watson is averaging 9.9 points this season, but has posted a 23.4 average over his last five games as the Warriors try to fill the void left by Maggette.

Rookie point guard Stephen Curry has also had a strong run, averaging 23.4 points, 8.5 assists and 6.3 rebounds in his last nine contests. Curry had 30 points against the Nuggets on Thursday, but Golden State lost for the 13th time in its last 16 games.

He joined Ellis and Anthony Morrow as the only guards available for the Warriors in that contest.

Tolliver helps Warriors continue comeback tradition

OAKLAND (NBA.com exclusive) -- Forward Anthony Tolliver's mere presence in the locker room perpetuates one Warriors tradition -- that of Golden State being able to unearth hidden talent in the NBA D-League.

Tolliver's play Saturday helped the Warriors continue another of their more recent trends -- mounting successful comebacks from double-digit deficits.

Tolliver finished with 19 points and set career highs in rebounds (14) and assists (five) as the Warriors recovered from 13 points down at the half to beat Detroit 95-88.

It was the second time in a week the Warriors have come back from more than 10 points down; Golden State trailed by as many as 18 points Sunday before beating Atlanta 108-104. And for a team that holds the third-worst record in the NBA at 17-41, the Warriors seldom quit in the second halves of games that seem lost to most observers.

"It's more exciting when you come back from down 20, or 18, or 13," said C.J. Watson, who overcame stomach pains to post 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists. "We go down by 20 points and end up coming back and winning the game or getting it close. ... We keep fighting, and it's a good thing for this team."

The other good thing for the Warriors, especially in this injury-ravaged season, has been their ability to find NBA-caliber players in D-League. Coming into the season, Golden State was already counting on D-League alums Watson and Kelenna Azubuike (before his season-ending injury).

Now they've added Tolliver and Chris Hunter to that lineage, and Tolliver is certainly making good on that opportunity. Saturday was his fifth double-double in just 20 games.

"The first day I got here, coach [Don] Nelson told me, 'You're going to play, and you're going to play a lot,'" said Tolliver, who will be an unrestricted free agent at the season's end. "I knew from then it was going to end up being my shot."

Golden State righted itself in the second half, chopping 10 points from the Pistons' advantage in the third quarter and taking the lead on an open corner 3-pointer by Watson with 9:53 remaining. Stephen Curry had 16 of his game-high 27 points after intermission.

"Sometimes you don't know how you win games, but we just stayed around long enough to make plays at the right time," said Nelson, who didn't have much to work with.

Monta Ellis missed his sixth game of the season with what the Warriors described as back pain, and Andris Biedrins checked out with 4:55 remaining in the third quarter and did not return, suffering from what the team said was a strained right groin. Although the immediate prognosis was day-to-day, the injury was ominous because Biedrins missed 24 of the Warriors' first 29 games with osteitis pubis, a strain of abdominal and groin muscles, and has been affected for most of the season by the layoff.

With most of the roster healthy, it looked as though the Pistons had finally started to put John Kuester's defensive lessons into action.

They held the Warriors to season-low point totals for the first quarter (14 points) and first half (37), shooting 34.9 percent along the way. But shorthanded Golden State went 7-for-17 on 3s in the second half to whip up the crowd.

"The last three games we have played in, we have let the team come back in the last quarter," Kuester said. "We had it under control and we allowed them the opportunity to get back in the game."

Even with the Warriors' recovery, it still like the Pistons would successfully finish up a back-to-back that began in Denver on Friday. When Richard Hamilton hit one of two free throws with 4:33 remaining, it capped a 9-1 Detroit run that put the Pistons up by six points.

Things disintegrated quickly from there, however. Jonas Jerebko scored Detroit's last bucket on a tip shot with 3:51 remaining, then sprained an ankle on the Pistons' next possession and did not return.

After that, the Warriors deliberately fouled Ben Wallace on two straight trips downcourt, with Wallace missing three of four free throws.

The Warriors couldn't use that strategy in the final two minutes unless Wallace touched the ball, which is why it was so inexplicable that the Pistons passed to him with 23.5 seconds left and the Warriors leading by three.

Devean George hacked Wallace, who airballed both shots. Morrow converted two at the other end and it was all but over.

"I think we lost our focus tonight," Pistons forward Tayshaun Prince said. "It wasn't on Ben because we should have never put ourselves in a place that we needed to reply on anything."
