HOUSTON (NBA.com exclusive) -- Facing their in-state nemesis, the San Antonio Spurs, Houston coach Rick Adelman decided to dance with who brung him. The Rockets needed a win, so if for one night his definition of "team" basically meant three players were doing much of the work, then so be it.
Yes, the Rockets needed a win that badly.
What they got was history -- and that much-needed win.
For the first time in their 43-year history, the Rockets had three players score at least 30 points, and they needed every one of them to hold off the Spurs 109-104 before a sellout crowd of 18,195 at Toyota Center.
But Adelman wasn't smiling much afterward. No, after leading by as many as 23, the Rockets needed four free throws from point guard Aaron Brooks in the final eight seconds to stave off what would have been a very tough loss.
The foul shots finished off a 31-point night for Brooks, who combined with Kevin Martin (33) and Luis Scola (a career-high 30) for 94 of the Rockets points, each logging over 41 minutes. After three straight losses and six in their previous seven games, Adelman decided he was going to ride his three horses down the stretch.
"We needed this win," Adelman said. "We had to get this win tonight, and we got it."
For a few tense seconds, it appeared that it wouldn't be a win at all.
The Spurs, trailing by 13 with three minutes left, went into full scramble mode and twice closed the gap to three in the final 10 seconds. But Brooks, capping a brilliant night from the foul line by the Rockets, wrapped up the win with four straight free throws.
With Martin and Scola both tying franchise records with 14-for-14 performances at the line, the Rockets shot a blistering 89.5 percent (34-for-38).
"I think we still have a lot of work to do closing out games," Brooks said. "We let them back in it and had to rely on free-throw shooting. We still have a lot of work to do."
The Spurs played without Tony Parker, who missed the game because of illness, with George Hill (26 points) starting. And, in a case of coach Gregg Popovich deciding to dance with who brung him, the Spurs played much of the second half without stars Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili, who combined for 12 second-half minutes.
With players like Richard Jefferson (15 points), Roger Mason (12), DeJuan Blair (10), Ian Mahimni (eight) and Malik Hairston (eight) supplying the adrenaline, the Spurs managed to put a scare into the Rockets.
"They [the Rockets] jumped out and got a big lead (31-14 at the end of the first quarter), and I liked the way our bench played," said Popovich, whose bench outscored the Rockets by an astounding 61-4 margin. "I never thought about taking them [his subs] out."
Not that the Rockets were going to complain about not seeing Duncan and Ginobili.
The Rockets were playing without Trevor Ariza (hip pointer) and Kyle Lowry (ankle), but they were just happy to see Martin finally look like the scoring machine he proved to be in Sacramento. One of the biggest reasons for Martin's turnaround is that he didn't settle for jumpers, instead using a nice crossover to attack the basket off the dribble that produced a parade to the foul line.
"My game is to get to the hole, and that's when my outside shot starts to fall," said Martin, who enjoyed his first win as a Rocket since arriving in Houston on Feb. 18 as part of the Tracy McGrady trade. "In the second half against Orlando (a 110-92 loss Wednesday), I did that, so I just wanted to come out and do the same thing today."
Martin's scoring opened up the lane for Brooks, who zipped through the Spurs' defense for degree-of-difficulty layups and short pull-up jumpers in the lane. And the Rockets got a post game to complement their backcourt, with Scola adding 13 rebounds and four assists to his night's work.
"This is a great system," Martin said. "It's a scorer's dream system. You don't just watch one player dominate the ball. For three guys to score 30 points, that says it all right there. It's a players' system."
But according to Adelman, those players have to figure out how to close out games.
"I'm pleased to get the win," Adelman said. "The way we played for two-and-a-half quarters was terrific, but I'm disappointed with the way we finished the game. We just have to do a better job... I was excited to get the win, but we have to be better -- we just have to be better -- in situations.
"We have to play the game smart," Adelman added. "It's not just a physical game -- it's a mental game, too. We were acting like we were 50-and-something [record-wise]. We're trying to win the game here.
"It's very disturbing to me that we don't realize that. We've lost six of our last seven. There's no time to be complacent and think that we have it made. I felt like we were thinking, 'Well, we have this game [won].' You have to finish the game."
